The Hornet's Nest: Hudson Hornet Build Madness!
wgflatliner replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Community Builds
I started making more progress with mine. I finally found a color scheme for my "his" version of the car. The bottom portion of the car will be arctic blue metallic and the top will be Ice blue pearl. The interior colors will be complimentary to the exterior along with a gray flocking. The chassis work is under way. I airbrushed the bottom of the floor pan under the car the arctic blue metallic. This is the first time I have thinned enamels with lacquer thinner and it works well. When I get home then I will start assembly of that along with some chassis details like brake lines and whatnot. I have also started working on the body work by shaving off the handles and locks and seam lines. I think I got em all so I will get it in primer to verify the work. I do have the rest of the week off so that gives me a lot of time to get a lot done. Pics in due time! -
If I wasn't in the current active 50s build with my 57 ford fairlane 500 and the two Hudson hornets I might have been inclined to join in this.

Gold is the engine color. I used testers spray paint. It gives it a decent look. I have seen other golds and they don't have the right sheen so it seems. -
Started tinkering with the 57 ford today. It is going to be an out of box build. So no add on stuff. That in itself should be a challenge!

I have been doing lots of research. I started on the frame finally. Got it cleaned up and painted and finding as many reference photos as possible to build it somewhat realistic Some links http://www.significantcars.com/collections/royce/rc33/fullsize.html Will get some pics as I progress. Hope the links are helpful! -
Got my aftermarket stuff last night. Building shall commence when I get home.

I completely lost track of this community build. I suppose I could reinitiate it. However I will be removing the deadline so those interested can do at their leisure and anybody can join. I gotta find a $500ish looking car then get started on it. Maybe a ford escort or Chevy citation..

Got a photo etch and carbon decal combo set for the tamiya sauber Mercedes c9 from Scale Motorsport. The photo etch set isn't bad. The instructions come on a weird wax paper and tells you to hold it up to the box art so you can have an idea where the parts go, however the outline on the instructions does not match the box art whatsoever. There are a couple of part call-outs that don't match either. I'm sure I will figure it out though

I have been contemplating about this myself. I found an "exciting tuner vehicle" Toyota 4runner but the chassis has it lowered if I follow the kit directions as if it's supposed to be sporty. I personally love the 4runner and if I had one I would lift it with some swampers. So I managed to get my mitts on some swamper tires. I just have to figure out how to make a custom frame with a lift to fit the tires. I also plan on doing it as if it was a show truck with the chrome and glitzy paint and interior. Thank goodness for spare parts bins.

Anybody else have to do a lot of clean up on the frame? -
As of now I am waiting for the aftermarket stuff to show up in the mail and I will continue work on the sauber Mercedes. The engine is close to done if anything. The body is painted and half of the decals are done. The parts I am expecting are the photo etch and carbon fiber decals.

lol Aaron - thanks for the compliment. what's more interesting is i'll be making two. eek. thanks for the comment, harry -
i suppose this gives me a reason to get a couple more builds started/finished. i have a total of 3 i'd like to enter. Sauber C9 Mercedes Toyota Tom's 84C LeMans Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 rally car (the kit was produced in 85 so it CAN'T be newer than 1990!) if i can only choose one it'll be the sauber c9. i do have a couple other builds taking priority though.

Here's where i stand on the "his" 53 hudson hornet. what i've added: throttle linkages spark plugs, boots, wires fuel lines a fuel filter (100% scratch built) with the filter element heater hose drilled out the end of the crank case ventilation tube choke heater lines from the carbs to the exhaust manifold vacuum advance from the distributor to the carb and also put in a little wire on the starter to simulate the starter solenoid. what's next: touch up painting wire the generator wire the starter fabricate a throttle linkage return spring (i have to figure out where it goes first) figure out where the other heater hose goes once i get the engine completely built, then i'll work on the chassis, which is going to include routing fuel lines, brake lines, and putting the engine and drivetrain in. keep in mind i'm building two of these at once, and will attempt to obtain the same level of realism with both builds. thanks for looking! -

If you can also add two 53 Hudson hornets to my list that would be cool. Does the paint have to be factory stock? The reason I ask is because I will be doing a his and hers build of the cars.

I have a 57 ford fairlane 500. I will build it factory stock.

I got to work on mine a bit. I picked up two of them and plan on doing a his and hers fully detailed. This means one in blue hues throughout and the other in girls colors like pinks and such. The paint jobs on them will both be custom with patterns matching each other in their corresponding colors. The end result will be a single display with both of them together at a car show. I am nearly done with the first engine. I just need to finish the air cleaners and get in line for the non disappearing decals. There were some general questions and comments about the kit that I have. I compared both of my kits along with three other kits from my local club and they all have the same "issues." First: if you look at the frame dead on from the front, the driver side a-arm is thicker than the passenger side and it's flat whereas the passenger side is rounded. It won't affect how the kingpin goes in but may be an aesthetic thing to work on should anybody desire. Second: what's the faint line that's above the driver side door handle? It runs parallel with the handle. Third: I see where the heater hose runs from the water pump to the firewall. Where does the return heater go from the firewall? I'm enjoying watching these builds and will take pics of mine tomorrow/later today. -
more progress.

my experience thus far with ross gibson motors: i got the sonny's supermax supercharged engine, and if i remember correctly it has 48 pieces to it. i will say this: test fit, test fit, test fit, fix, test fit, test fit, fix, fix, test fit... test fit... annd if you feel confident with the way the piece glued together..... glue! i was kinda irritated that they didn't just make it a single cast for the block, but oh well. that's why we build models, right? oh, and i preferred the kit exhaust manifolds from the 55 pro sportsman over the resin pieces.

haha.. the real thing AND the model aren't exactly.. cheap?

and the parting shots for now. thanks for looking!
