2012 POST APOCALYPSE/ZOMBIE HUNTER COMMUNITY BUILD
wgflatliner replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Community Builds
Cool looking stuff guys. I did some body work stuff like using super glue to stipple in where I want some surface rust, and I used a Dremel tool to grind out behind the fenders to get the rusted through look. Once it's all dried and cured I plan on denting it up a little bit. Once the body is where I want it, then it will be ready for primer then the rusting and painting. I also did some flat styrene strips for the windshield area for framing. Pictures coming soon -

Thanks Virgil. I just got the other windows done with the exception of the windshield. I got my files from harbor freight. There should be 12 files, everything from flat to tapered to triangle to half rounds to full rounds. Overall not a bad deal. -

I am poking around with this a little more. I got the Utah shaped hatch cut out. I will be hinging it like a door in a house so it will be able to be opened and closed. This means I need to put a lip on the inside of the hole I cut out and figure out if I want the hatch to open all the way flat or make the hatch open at about a 100 degree angle like a seat back, and the interior side of the hatch door to have a cushion. I am also tinkering with a design for the slits in the windows that will have a mesh to replace the areas cut out. Not much progress but here is a pic of where I stand on this. -

Mr cranky are you going to save a compilation of all the completed builds for an under glass thread? -

i took one of the mounting tubes and cut it in half to create a mounting bracket to the mount, and some more brass tubing to replicate the idea that the scope can be adjusted vertically. it is inanimate, and won't move. but you can see through the scope!! and the body mocked up with the current progress. enjoy! -

alright i started working on mine. i'm going to call this genre a scout or reconnaisance type of vehicle. it's a 92 mercury cougar. aftermarket stuff include animal print decals from scale motorsport, some brass tubing, clear styrene, styrene rods and pattern styrene sheets so far. i started with the spikes in the front with some toothpicks i used the brass tubing to create the scope along with styrene tube to help create a mount. i used clear green styrene to form the lens on the front. i figure that in the future, they wouldn't have precision cut lenses, so i made it look like a piece of glass that was slapped on. i then cut out an off-center hole in the roof to place the scope. it's off center on purpose as i plan on having a hatch in such a way where it'd line up with the user's right eye. i will also be putting in an arm rest kind of deal on it. I know that to make this scope functional it will require the use of modifying the interior extensively. so be it! that'll be soon enough once i get the body work done. i also drilled out some holes for some antennas. more pics coming -
more pics this was a fun kit despite the fight it put up! enjoy!

So last night while watching the paint dry on a model, I got to thinking. Some of the box art on these models is actually kind of cool. I am contemplating the idea of cutting the lids off the boxes that are "cool" and putting them up like posters on my wall. Would this be considered something that you would do or is this just weird?

The brand black you use won't matter just make sure it's smooth.

I say model. Look at the reflection in the paint and you see a hall way. -

Ok I have made up my mind lol.. I have a 90s mercury cougar that I a going to build for this, starting tonight. Ad if you have seen the movie Office Space, the car will definitely have some flair. This will suffice until I get that buffalo kit whenever it comes out. -
To be honest, harry, I am not really a fan of the older amt models. My club did a gift exchange for christmas and turned it into a contest that would be a club contest at the end of February. The idea is to build what you got at the party. I was working with this kit and after seeing its issues, I decided I didn't want to dump more money into it if the model itself isn't that great. So it turned into box stock. I know the kit didn't have many pieces to it and I knew there was an out of box contest coming up. So I looked at the kit and decided to just get it done. Due to the limited parts involved, it seemed possible. It didn't bother me that I rushed because its something else removed from my stash. And I actually did have fun with it! So, that said, if I find a decent model that requires a decent amount of effort then I won't attach any deadlines to it.

The key to alclad is as follows: Make the plastic as smoooooooth as possible. If you dont, these minor imperfections will absolutely show up. Then apply primer. Then you will need to make sure to use gloss black as the color, again making sure to make it smooth. Then mist on the chrome from about 8-12 inches away at a medium pace. Keep misting until you get the desired look you are going for. The trickiest part is to avoid touching it even after it cures because it will easily rub off. You could use future floor wax to seal it though. Now for my project I got the car in future clear coat and put it in the dehydrator to cure. I also got a majority of the carbon fiber decals done. I need to do a bit more work with the rear suspension and the photo etched parts, otherwise the engine bay is about 90% done. I also need to do the exhaust and heat treating and install the turbos, then I will be closer to done. I am taking pics during progress, and will post up when I get a chance.

Thanks. I already painted the tail lights after the photos were taken. With the axles I am going to address them when I get it back

alright so i had some issues with my build. the front frame was being stupid and kept snapping off, so i got frazzled and just wanted to get it done. not my best work by any means. but it's done! -
I was in a rush to get this done, and it took all of three days and nearly an all night session to get it done. One last thing I need to do is paint the tail lights. I was on a deadline to have it done by today. The model is typical older amt quality, which isn't great. The metal axles are too long and the wheels don't like the tires. I gave the paint the oxidized look as if the owner of the car neglected to keep the paint polished. The contest I am in is the out of box type, so no spark plug wires or stuff like that. Flocking and foil are allowed. Considering the deadline and the time put into it, I am happy with the end result. I will upload better pictures tonight.

SO YOU FINISHED YOUR MODEL, NOW WHAT?
wgflatliner replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When I build, I try to get better as I progress. If the end result is a decent build then I will take them to contests. If the end result is less than stellar, then they get put in a display and on the shelf. The things I wonder about: if the model is sealed in a case, how is dust getting in? It's more of a ponder than looking for an answer. When I take them to contests, I really don't care if I win. It's a social event for me and allows others to see my work. If I do win, I don't mind that either! I like answering questions that others ask about my models, but more importantly I like being the one asking the questions. Seeking knowledge is always a good thing. -
Correct you if you are wrong. I did, and you fixed it. Thank you. In terms of seeking out cranky as a source of entertainment, I don't actively do so. If I happen to stumble across something funny or entertaining no matter where it's from, that's fine. Maybe I'm overreacting here but to me it seems you get your kicks by trying to be the "bad guy" by talking smack. You don't have the forum's best interest in mind, rather your own. there is no technical section of the forum? When is the last time you actually looked? Here, let me help in a non sarcastic way. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showforum=27 About you responding to a thread in the general section about said general topic, I never said you shouldn't ask technical stuff in the same forum. It was merely a suggestion or hint that most technical bits are in the technical portion of the forum as previously mentioned. But to complain about a general thread in the general forum is a tad childish, and of course also my opinion. I'm glad that digital photography has come along. It does show flaws, and even major ones. So in that aspect I wholeheartedly agree. I will also agree it helps me become a better model builder. I never once claimed to be amazing at it. In fact I know I have a long ways to go before I'm happy with my builds. I, however, will not look up your builds just to try and find a way to throw some e-jabs your way, because I have respect for everybody with their work because they are doing something they like to do. Btw which flaws on which model are you speaking of mine? Why not post in the actual thread so I can see what you're talking about so I can address them? In fact I would rather you posted there so not to bother everybody else over a build in this thread. I have been an advocate for critiques and welcome them, so long as they are presented in a semi decent way. In the final part of your response, you are right. I don't affect your life. The only person that should affect your life is you and those around you personally. So I don't know why you're bitter, or if cranky rubbed you the wrong way, or if you don't get along with him because he did something to you, but your animosity or anger in general really isn't necessary.
