Model car boxes (different then the other post)
Erik Smith replied to chevyfever2009's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Why does anybody buy anything? Either they need it (food) or they want it (unassembled plastic car, decorated paper container to hold plastc car). Look for 3 minutes on eBay and you will find a million things that people are buying for no reason other than they want it... -
Airbrush Kit Recommendations?
Erik Smith replied to TheMiniatureLife's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If he is indeed a fanatic... I would purchase one of the aforementioned double action airbrushes. They do require slightly more time and patience to learn, but the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Also, on the Badger Talon, you can lock the needle and use it as a single action airbrush. So, airburshes: Paasche Talon Iwata Eclipse Iwata Revolution There are other Badger models that are nice, but I am not familiar with the Badger line... I prefer gravity feed, easrier to clean, operates at lower psi... As for compressors: Yes, you can use a pancake hardware store compressor. They have a huge range of PSI and are relatively cheap. However, they are noisy and large. I have an Iwata Sprint Jet, and while it's ok, it will not go above about 22psi with a 5mm nozzle brush. Usually not a problem, but if you want to shoot more paint at a higher PSI, you can't do it with most of the Iwata line (sprint jet, power jet) as they all have the same compressor. I have been looking at getting a Badger Aspire - it has a 1/6 hp motor, trigger activated, and some other features, and goes up to 57psi - all for about $200. Shop around online for all the items and you will be able to get a complete set up in the $300 range - for a very well made, reliable, usable AB set... My 2 cents... -

question about working with acrylics
Erik Smith replied to Ryan S.'s topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Mixing that many mediums (acrylic paint, enamel clear, lacquer thinner) is asking for problems. Definitely test first. Not all acrylics or enamels are the same, either, so one person's experience will be different than the next. I have used lacquer clear over Tamiya acrylics and it worked. I have used enamel over some acrylics that didn't work. So...I guess I don't have a good answer.. -
Chevy Citation… stop laughing
Erik Smith replied to vwdave92's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I am not Casey, but... I would say yes, the scale difference is one hurdle. The difference is actually quite large between the two cars - the 1/24 Citation is a good 1/4 inch wider than the 1/25 Cavalier. Seems the Citation is a big 1/24 or cavalier is a small 1/25. -

So is the 'rat rod' craze officially over?
Erik Smith replied to Mike_G's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's a mix - there are some built to the true sense (at least in some respect) to original rat rods. Those are fine - not everybody's cup o' tea but nothing is. The other end are hot rods, high end stuff, painted to look old and neglected. Those are just silly and a bit deplorable, to me. They look fake and I was actually surprised how many I saw at the last show I went to. -

There was a WIP at one point - no idea if it was finished or when it occurred... -
Turned out fantastic! Great looking model - and, watching the WIP, great work too.

Your favourite Box art

Saw the top one on eBay and found the second searching for an image of the first. -
Speaking of clutches... When I bought my new car last year, I wanted a manual. They had one on the lot. I bought it. When I go back now and look around, there are zero manuals on the lot - 60-100 cars and not one is a manual. I just think it's a lot more fun driving a stick. People don't want them now becuase it's too hard to drink coffee, text, SHIFT, and drive at the same time... I used to work on cars in my spare time. Every now and then I think about it again, then I watch a TV show that shows rusted off, broken bolts and I change my mind

Turned out very cool in a cute way. I like the wheel switch. Very nice work.

Great looking model. I like the 6 and the custom exhaust. Cool color too. I also like the black wheels with the whitewall tires.

Promotional Models Auction
Erik Smith replied to Thom's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They used acetate for promos until about 1961, then converted to more stable styrene - to the best of my knowledge. The glass on that '58 wagon is weird, though. Looks like shattered safety glass. Body is straight! -
more airbrush questions
Erik Smith replied to mgruenwald's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I prefer gravity feed. I haven't used my siphon in the last year... It's easier to clean and sprays at a nice, low pressure. -
Wait! If your building a loser car, and the car with the most votes gets built, that would make it a winner, so you can't build the car with the most votes... I would go with brown or light blue for the color: But really, they look good in any color. Edit: I just noticed the standard cigarette lighter - I called the 12v accessory plug a "cigarette lighter" in my car the other day and my kids had no idea what I was talking about!

First one probably lost control and shot up the rail grade - couldn't quite jump the all the tracks... The one on the pole, I would guess - as mentioned above - got either a guide wire or a downed wire. I've seen videos of cars getting flipped from down wires. The Dodge on (or half on) the bridge looks like a fun ordeal. It looks like he was towing a trailer and that's what kept the truck from going over board. This kind of stuff is the best thing about the internet
