Alternate-Reality 1935 Allison-powered LSR car
Erik Smith replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Oh, man. That is a cool concept. The "layout" looks fast standing still. I like the front fender arrangement. Are you keeping the fenders separate from the body? Those bulges are cool too - like mighty, bulging biceps. -
Billings? Tough break

Your better off with bare plastic than putting the dreaded Testor's enamel sprays on. They get old and bubble - and it seems they are ALL old.

Aoshima Rocket Bunny 86 , Volk Racing Ver
Erik Smith replied to martinfan5's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Cool. The Rocket Bunny version has new struts? That's awesome - I was wondering if the kit would ride stock height and would need adjusting. -
Those are really cool. Jonathan - aren't you missing a sprue or two? Where's the drivetrain? It looks like (Hobby Search-wise) the trucks are all wheel drive and include the lower engine detail? Thanks for posting up pictures.

No super glue. Safety wire, though. They must have removed the wire on the final production - I don't see it. Oh, and done in one shot! Pretty cool ad.

Another crazy ebay listing...
Erik Smith replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would think collectors would know enough to "know" that kit is a phantom. I knew the '63 wagon box was a phantom because I knew there never was such a model. Why is it so weird somebody would want a collectible piece of art? Obviously, the person making these boxes is quite good at reproducing convincing boxes - design, layout, print, assemble box, and shrink wrap. -

There was a phantom box with a 1963 Ford Fairlane wagon - sold for $38. I thought it was cool. It was a shrink wrapped box. Looked like a real kit. -
Revell Germany 1st quarter 2014 releases..
Erik Smith replied to Luc Janssens's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Cool, more Mini stuff. Okay, so, anybody know if this is going to be a straight reissue with added rally parts? Or backdated to reflect the 1961 mentioned in the description? To clarify…aren't both Tamiya and ROG versions 1964 model years? And didn't the ROG version contain some parts for a different version (shift lever)? Also, why are the seats two different colors on the box? And non-flare? I will have to do some Google work to learn a bit more... -
Thank you, whomever you are

Awesome gesture! Too bad we don't get to see more posts like this and less in the other direction. -
Yeah, I have wondered that myself. Way beyond decals. They are an additional cost and step in production, though... I can't judge the best kit ever, becuase I have built so few! I really like Revell's 1962 Impala - very nice construction and the car "looks" the part. Tamiya - yeah, cliche there. Thier kits are amazingly engineered. The manufactuerer to watch (and has been for a few years) is Aoshima. I have only built two of thier models but have a few in the heap and have to say that the engraving and crisp detail is unsurpassed. Beautiful stuff. So…what was the question?

"Best decal material"?
Erik Smith replied to johnbuzzed's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I like Papilio too - the clear is thinner than the white though. To save paper, I print out a test on regular paper, then cut out a piece of decal paper just big enough for the decal I am making, scotch tape over the image on plain paper and run through the printer. -
I just bought three special edition cars - tostitos, green giant, and something else - for the wheels. I can post some pictures in the am when I'm outta bed...

I have a custom grill on my '57 - you can have the parking lights if you want them... Great looking model!

Latest Issue ? ...
Erik Smith replied to michaelbaskett's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have zero experience running a magazine. From what I can speculate, it's not easy. It must be difficult to come up with new, relevant topics all the time. This isn't really a complicated hobby, so getting new features and articles must be somewhat of a challenge. Also, relying on contributors to supply material compiles the of assembling and organizing a publication. I don't envy the task. Oh, what about selling ad space? Distribution? Yeah, I'm out. Thanks to those that continue the effort - right on time or not. I am one who is grateful we have multiple magazines to read. SA was really THE thing that got me thinking more serious about modeling back when I found my first copy (at a Super Value in Campbell River, BC, of all places). Bashing one or the other, as stated above, really proves nothing or solves anything. You can like them both, or vice versa. Now, off to the Train Hobby shop where I always buy my copy... -
Question on AMT model kits
Erik Smith replied to wheelingmountaineer's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
A lot of instruction sheets are not accurate anyway, so research online is more accurate and reliable than the recommendations in the kit. -
I think it looks good with no lightbar. Spotlight maybe, but keep the roof smooth.

R and R did a 69 Coronet wagon - that could be a start.

AMT "Sock it To Me" Corvette Gasser
Erik Smith replied to Tye Brown's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Great looking model! I really like the paint. Those decals are really cool. Nice work. -
Anybody know if there is a website that has model company catalogs for viewing? I am looking for late 70s AMT and MPC catalogs... Not so interested in buying anything. Thanks.

Here's a deal for someone
Erik Smith replied to chevyfever2009's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks like someone just getting rid of a collection rather than maximizing profit... About 1/3 of the collection is worthless - NASCAR stuff - I counted over 100. There are about 11 kits that are worth some money - the rest are new, currently available kits. As of today, 630 + 200 = 830/320 = $2.59 per kit (or, take out all the NASCAR stuff…830/220=3.77 per kit - still a really good deal) Count on some damage when that many kits are boxed and shipped, too. -
All the models are looking great. Man, that Duster is going to be tough to beat. My aspirations died months ago, but maybe I can ride in the back seat of Fred's Land Cruiser.

Aoshima Rocket Bunny 86 kit whats in the box review pg5
Erik Smith replied to martinfan5's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Not to divert the thread too much…but my last order from TH was returned mid-ship because the label was torn off - so TH paid to express mail the model from Japan - showed up in THREE DAYS! That's service.
