Ok............I've been studying that quarter window shape on my example reeeeal close since I made that post. One issue that would go a long way to get that shape more correct is the angle of the quarter window 'frame' or post. It's a bit too upright if not slanted back slightly and should lean just a bit forward. Also, increasing the size of the trailing edge of the quarter window the width of the drip rail would help in getting the shape closer to the 1:1. As I said, now that it's been pointed out and I see it, I can't unsee it.

For what seemed to be a slow year Steve, you sure got a lot done! Those two are gorgeous! I'm struggling just to get this '74 Corvette done while I have time off from work before years end. I'm on the home stretch, but as usual there's been a couple snags along the way.

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Well Tim, I have to say that's it's an utter shame things happened the way they did! The effort the old team at Revell put into this kit........I can't find a single fault with it! Too bad as who knows what other gems we might have gotten had things not gone the way they did. Here's hoping that whomever is in charge there now sees the enthusiasm of us out here over this kit and how as I mentioned before in another post...............a good looking/accurate model will sell itself. -
It's always interesting to see three different kit makers have a different spin on a particular subject. Now that I see the quarter window shape of the Revell Mustang, I can't unsee it. So whenever the time comes to make this a WIP, that's a fix I'll have to do among other things. That also explains the 'broadness' at the top of the C pillar before it begins to taper into the trunk. I couldn't put my finger on why that seemed a bit 'off', but seeing all three of these bodies together makes it VERY clear. Not a hard fix (to me), but something that I can't let go once it's under construction. Also, this is the first I've ever seen a Mach 1 body out of the box. I never bought that kit as the box art build-up was woefully unimpressive due to that front end. And others models I had seen left me underwhelmed because it was so wrong. I can see where Revell made those side scoops separate. I never knew that until now!

I think what he meant is that they evolved from essentially the same master that was used to create them. IIRC, the master is done in 1/12 scale (or larger....depends) and then scaled down to whatever size they need for a particular run. Monogram for years was stuck on 1/24, but when Revell took the reins, they wanted everything to be 1/25 which has been pretty much the case since the '90's.

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I think it comes down to cost. It's cheaper to print them on a decal sheet, than it is to have the artwork done, pay a supplier to make the scripts and what that entails. They know that there are aftermarket sources that will sooner or later do the work for them! -
Oh Ok..........I bought that Shelby kit when it came out but didn't build it till sometime in the early '90's. As I mentioned, I don't know what happened in the board room when that Mach 1 was being tooled, but that's one of the worst front end renditions I've ever seen on any model that I can recall. Some might have some other turkeys out there they can remember.
-
Dave, sans the side scoops on the Mach 1, wouldn't it be easier to change the current kit to a Mach 1? You'd have to cut the hood out, but the shaker scoop is on the tree. Still there'd be some bodywork to graft in those side scoops. Seems to me not as troublesome as putting on an entire nose section but it would be six of one, or half a dozen of the other I guess.
-
I don't have the Mach 1, but yeah it would make more sense that it was changed from the Mach 1 and not the Shelby. I can never remember which came first. I didn't get the Mach 1 as one glance at that front end was an instant turn off. Never had I seen something so misshapen..........how that got past the tool makers and they thought that looked good is beyond me. But then, we had the '58 Plymouth.............
-
Luc, in looking at the body and also at the '69 Shelby, it looks to me like it's more a somewhat reworked Shelby body than anything. I'd have to imagine they still have the 1/12 masters of that car and then went from there. At least that's my hope and they didn't permanently get rid of the Shelby tooling to make this as that's an excellent kit also.

Another wildly productive year: 2018 completions

I've got several of these in my stash. IMO, this kit has THE MOST accurate GM 1963-64 B-Body two door hardtop roofline. Even the old '60's annuals to my eyes never got that quite right. I have a somewhat forlorn AMT '64 Pontiac Bonneville that's been calling my name to give it a roof swap with this Revell roof. The kit itself is quite nice.....VERY nicely detailed SBC and builds up with no issues as I've heard.
-
Thanks Scott! Yeah it's interesting how they handled the interior. Nothing that a Dremel/saw can't fix with a little work as far as that roll bar attaching points. Now I may be wrong, but it looks like this kit represents a Boss with the deluxe interior for '69? I'm not that well versed in this version of Mustang as far as options, but it could be it represents a Boss that was available with that-------just didn't have the higher price tag of the Shelby.

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I was on another message board and someone wondered about the fit of the grille/headlights of the new kit compared to the old AMT '69 convertible. My curiosity got the best of me, so I dug out my kit which has the '68 conversion set from The Modelhaus and I did some test fitting. It's interesting what I found.................... As can be seen here the answer is no. The Revell part is too wide which makes me wonder if the AMT one is actually a little smaller than 1/25. Some definite narrowing is needed which'll be difficult at best since this is all molded in one piece. Once there's PE available for it, the task will be easier as there may be a separate grille, but at this juncture it's a no go. I then wanted to see if the chassis would fit. It looks like it does, but it was quite a tight fit. Some definite tweaking would be needed to get the chassis to sit squarely in the body. You have to first and foremost grind away at the rear inner fenders to get it to fit properly. Looks the wheelbase is about the same, but without some quick measurements which I didn't do, I'm a bit doubtful of that due to the fit issue. I'd simply use the conversion set I have already for the '69 to backdate it to a '68, or have a little patience and see if Revell releases a convertible version in the future. Seems logical to me since we already have this '69-----a '68 would be a nice choice. So there you have it! For those of you curious about transposing some of the new kit to the old '69, it's doable but not without some work------work that some may or may not be able to do. Hope this helps! -
66 Chevelle Station Wagon done stock(interior update 1/12/18)
MrObsessive replied to 66belair's topic in WIP: Model Cars
OK Mike you went and did it! I've been watching this thread and everything is coming along so nice, I went and bought a conversion set from Norm when I saw him at the MAMA Christmas party last weekend! Don't know when I'd get to it, but I'm a big believer in when one sees something in the aftermarket and they like and can buy it..........DO SO! It can disappear in a flash and then you're stuck paying a crazy price on eBay one day.- 38 replies

Straight onto the bench from the mailbox! 1968 Chevelle!
MrObsessive replied to Superbird McMonte's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I was one of those 300! And I gotta say they didn't mess around getting it to me as I had it in my hands literally last evening. I was so tickled to get it that I had to do a write up for all to see! It'll be a bit before I get to mine as well...........I'm just glad to see finally see a PROPER version of this car out!- 32 replies

That's the BIG thing that jumped out at me besides the VERY accurate front end...........those tires! Yeah, it would be great if Revell jumped into that market of selling those tires (along with their tampo printed redlines) in parts packs. I'm sure a number of these kits will sell big time alone because of FINALLY getting some decent tires and not the nameless, soulless blobs we were getting before.

Straight onto the bench from the mailbox! 1968 Chevelle!
MrObsessive replied to Superbird McMonte's topic in WIP: Model Cars
From what I can see on the 'Bay with a couple sellers that have them listed, they're selling like hotcakes! Revell's got a definite winner on their hands which just goes to show a well proportioned model kit will sell itself. Lets hope the gaffes of past releases are far behind them and we get more good stuff like this down the road. I can still think of a number of cars (popular) that would be nice to see on the hobby shelves and in my model room. If they're done right without major flub ups, that can only be good news for Revell.- 32 replies

Wow!! That is nice! Excellent black paint which ain't easy to do! The Monogram metal version this is? I've seen those, but can't remember if there was a plastic version or not. Yeah, getting something done this year has been a challenge for me also. I'll be trying to get that '74 Corvette done mostly this week before I go back to work.

72 Buick Riviera Boattail (Update 18/12/26)
MrObsessive replied to camaro69's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Rico, you might want to consider at least a hole location for the mirror and some sort of 'depressions' for the door handles in the door outer panels. IMO, they should be separate pieces if possible as not many care for molded on stuff. We can always pin the mirrors (that should be done anyway for reinforcement). Thanks for the updates and this is coming along VERY nicely! -
Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
You're very welcome Brandon! January? Wow, I'd go stir crazy till that time! I've bought very few new models this year and I have to say these are THAT good! Revell should be reaping many profits off of these and what's nice is there will be other versions to come from this tooling. I'd sure like to see a convertible spawned from the Chevelle. Not a hard conversion for someone that has some skill, but it's nicer if it can be at the ready. Revell already has the '72 Cutlass Convertible, so here's hoping. -
Merry Christmas to all and I hope you all get the styrene you've hoped and wished for! I'll have a nice quiet one here at home.......don't go back to work till Thursday for double time since we're on a shut down. We've been so busy though, they asked if I could come in for several days at five hours a shot. 15 hours with double time to boot?? I'll take it! I've got nothing going on and I'd just be around the house loafing anyway. I'll then have another four days off and then it's all back to normal come January 2nd. Hope everyone has a good and SAFE holiday!

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I knew I was forgetting something..............the decal sheet! Here it is and yes, the scripts are on it. I tried to check Model Car Garage's site to see if he makes PE for the AMT '69 for example, but his site is shut down for the holidays. If not, no doubt with the apparent high popularity of this kit they'll be one for it sooner or later.
