Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Here's a dead on side view of the DLO.......... And the new Revell........... Hmmm.........I dunno but I'd say Revell got that dead on right as far as the window shape. -
Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
That's what I was thinking as they were quite common on those back then. If/when I get around to building this, I'd have to build it with those Chevy 'hubcap' mags which I think '68 was the last year for those. With redlines of course! The Rally Wheels are nice, but IMO they're just too common and seem to be everywhere. -

Mike, I just did a review on it if you wanna check it out here. -
Another one we've been waiting for! One that we thought might not have seen the light of day with the troubles that Revell was having recently. Well, from first glance I have to say that Revell knocked this one outta the park! The front end on this is MUCH, MUCH better than the previous one! Gone is that forlorn and forsaken look the previous tooling had! One thing that still bugs me with Revell (and others) is the lack of positive locations when it comes to attaching front end parts for example. In this case here, of course this is a mockup to show how nice they finally got that front end. When it comes time to building and final assembly, it sure would be nice if we didn't have to 'hope' things go on straight after the body is nicely painted and polished up. Having a positive location would go a long way to ensure that flub ups are minimized and contributes to a neater appearance in the end. Chassis parts on the sprue. I have to wonder if Revell borrowed some bits and pieces from their '69 Shelby kit to make this chassis. It sure looks an awful lot like it! Boss 302 spoiler with separate 'stands'. Interior tub and seats with correct 1969 pattern. My only quibble in this area is the tub itself. Much better to build the interior on the flip side of the chassis floor (like a 1:1 car) and not have the hassle of trying to paint the door panels which in an interior tub is a real pain in the tush. Are those Shelby side scoops I see on the sprue?? More reinforcement that this is based somewhat on the Shelby which isn't a bad thing as that's a really nice kit. Correct '69 Mustang grille which looks to have the proper angle to it. Rear end with leaf springs, proper steering wheel, sport mirrors and wheel backs. Proper '69 taillight panel and the 302 engine. I see they give you the rear window shade which is a nice touch. I'm not that crazy about those however and if I were able to buy this car in '69, I'd have them leave that off. Chrome tree.......once again I see some Shelby specific parts on the sprue. WOW! Check out these white lettered tires! VERY nice tampo printing Revell! Clear red taillight lenses......... Very nice decal sheet with gauge faces! Nice touch and it goes a long way to dressing up the dash! I didn't take a pic of the glass........doesn't show up well on this camera, but it is of the runner type (rather have separate glass), but you all know how I am about glass, so I may not be using it anyway! Well, that's all there is to this! I can see this turning up on lots and lots of contest tables over the months and years. I'd say this may be the most desired Mustang of all the years made, and it's high time Revell did this one justice! From what I see, they're knockin' 'em dead with these two latest releases! Keep 'em comin' Revell!

OK, we've heard the rumors, we've seen the test shots and now this one is FINALLY in our hands! Mine arrived about an hour ago and upstairs it went immediately to my build room and off came the plastic. I usually don't open up models out of the bags ('cept for the body) till I'm ready to build it. It saves a lot of grief as far as lost parts and scratched up glass/chrome. So............here are some pics I took (Superbird McMonte took some good pics too) along with a description of what we're getting. From what I can see of the body and comparing it to pics I have on my hard disc, the body lines are pretty much spot on. Chevy fans might pick out a thing or two which might be questionable, but to my eyes Revell did a fantastic job of capturing the new for '68 A-Body and it simply blows AMT's '69 away as far as scale fidelity. Interesting what they did to the taillight end caps. Could there be a '69 in the works? I'd sure hope so as that seems to be the more preferred model among some. I personally like the '68 a bit better as I like the vent windows------a feature GM got rid of starting with the '69 A body hardtops. One thing I do see that I know a little something about is the wiper placement. Seems as though if you ordered a base model 300, your wipers were exposed due to the shape of the hood. Malibu's and SS models had the hood shaped that the wipers were more hidden. As we'll see the hood has the correct shape, but Revell chose to mold the wipers on top of the cowl at what would be the be the very base of the windshield. Not a hard fix at all, but once again it comes to mind if there's a future version we're not aware of and this is a cost cutting move. NICE chassis! Very good engraving and as we'll see, there's separate frame rails which is a bonus when it comes to painting. The tree holding the separate frame and exhaust. Interior bits and pieces on this tree. Engine parts. Looks like there's just one version of this engine......a 396 with a four speed transmission. The cowl type hood with nice engraving for the faux vents. Nice pad printed redlines and on my example here, the redlines are on nice and are concentrically done. No 'drunken' mishaps with circles that aren't concentric in the least! Nice chrome tree.......I didn't take this out of the plastic as I want this to stay put when the time comes for me to build this. Anything that can ward off scratches is a major plus. Clear red taillight lenses with metal pins no doubt for mounting the wheels. Forgot to take a pic, but there's separate glass for the front and rear and separate vent windows which is a good idea in case there's a '69 coming. I think this kit (along with the '69 Mustang) will be major sellers for Revell and one can only hope they stay on a roll with accurate, well proportioned kits to keep us lunatic fringers happy! Thanks for lookin'!

Just had mine delivered along with the Mustang! I'll be taking some quick pics with my take on it and then I'll take a long hard look at the Mustang. Stay tuned! -
I'd like to apologize also. It's not always known where someone is from originally, as you have posted in your avatar that you live here in the States. When I was a kid I had a mother that was a REAL STICKLER for one to speak English like they had good sense. She was the type that would stop you in your tracks if you said words wrong, or didn't use the proper verb usage. It would be helpful just the same if you told us what project you're working on. There might be someone among us that's either doing the same, or did this particular thing in the past.

Straight onto the bench from the mailbox! 1968 Chevelle!
MrObsessive replied to Superbird McMonte's topic in WIP: Model Cars
There's some other niceties I see that should make this going together without a lot of hassle. I see the lack of a 'platform' for the interior which will go a long way in making sure the car sits right. One of my big complaints with Revell's models over the years is many of them sit too high right out of the box due to that 'platform' interior among other things. The interior looks to build on the other side of the chassis floor. Just like the 1:1. Also, I like the fact that there's a separate frame. Makes painting those frame rails MUCH easier! Hmmm......pad printed redlines! I hope that they're all concentric and not printed by a drunken sailor which was the case with the Daytona kits years ago. Now my anticipation is on high tilt as I wait for mine............along with that '69 Mustang!- 32 replies

Lookin' good Dominick! I see they molded the taillight end caps separate. That should make it easy if there's a '69 in the works.- 32 replies

As wonky as our Postal Service can be this time of year, it wouldn't surprise me to see it till Monday either. However recently I had something delivered on a Sunday, so here's hoping and waiting. -
Tim, I'd like for them to change certain things. The first thing is to get rid of are those 'flared' wheel wells. To much 'lip' on them which the 1:1 did not have. Also, I'd like to see them move the body crease up by just a hair, and lower the door sill line just a teeny bit. At least that's the changes I'd make to the kit I have if I ever get the ambition to build it!

Hmmm.......according to the USPS, looks like I'll be getting both models TODAY! I'm gonna sure open 'em up as soon as they're in my model room. If I get a chance and clear some things off the table, I'll take some pics and do a mini review of the Chevelle (and maybe the '69 Mustang). -
Yeah, I once owned a MG Midget (actually a Healey) and it was one of the most troublesome cars I've ever owned before or since! Not that it ran badly, but there was the constant 'adjustment' of things and of course the electrical gremlins that turned up at the darndest times! Very nice build of that Triumph! I'd love to have another English car like that today, but no way I'd make it a daily driver like I did with my MG. I don't have that kind of patience today by fixing this and adjusting that.

David, I'm with you! This particular car IMO looks its best without the vinyl top. I'd build mine one a solid color as I don't car for the two toning either. Same goes for the El Camino! I always thought it was a rather silly idea to put a vinyl top on a truck. It spoils the nice flowing roofline that it has and I hate that little 'kickup' at the trailing edge of the roof pillar that the vinyl roof shape sports. One of the worst offenders of those GM 1968-69 A bodies with a vinyl roof has to be the Buick Skylark. Absolutely terrible to my eyes and no offense to anyone that might own one. I just NEVER liked the looks of that! -
Very, Very Nice! I can remember this car quite well as this was new during my high school days. This would be the last of the land yachts for Cadillac. After '78 things would get smaller, although the newest Escalade is a big vehicle itself but it's essentially a truck.

Wow! It looks just as good buttoned up as it does open! NOT an easy task and your engineering of this turned out VERY well!

You'd never know it seeing the weather today! 64ยบ out, and it feels like a mid spring day here in Central PA. Very weird with just Christmas just a few days away! No worries though.....we'll get our share of nasty snowstorms soon enough! -

Greg, welcome aboard! Another one from PA here in the Highspire/Middletown area. I'm not sure where you are, but we'd love to have you stop at the CPMCC club meeting where we meet in Mt. Wolf (York County). We meet the first Saturday of each month. There's also the HAMS club in Mechanicsburg which has meetings on the third Saturday of the month. That one I may not get to as often as it's usually a weekend I'm working early that morning and I simply want to get home and go back to bed then! -
Windshield mounted rear view mirror?
MrObsessive replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Hmmm..........good question! I'll have to check and see, but that little drop is so tiny, a bit of yellowing shouldn't be of major consequence. When I get a chance, maybe I can get a closeup pic of how that looks now. Hard to believe I built that back in 2007. Time flies! -
Thanks alot Brett! I just placed an order for both the Mustang and the Chevelle!
