Again, I refer you to post #143. In it I started to explain why a cap would not work in Nascar. Nascar is not a franchise sport, it is open to anyone who wants to field a car. Lets say you just won several hundred million in the Powerball, you can buy or build a car, hire a crew, and show up in Daytona in a few weeks and attempt to qualify for one of the open slots in the field. You can't start your own MLB, NFL, or NBA team the same way, you would have to buy an existing franchise. There is no owners association or union to bargin with to set a spending cap. This is how Nascar has tried to level the playing field by equalizing the cars (as much as possible). Nascar thought about going to a franchise system but instead went to the current system of locking in the top 35 cars in points for exactly this reason, to keep it open to anyone who wants to compete. If you want to debate the top 35 rule, it is in place to give the owners some sort of guarantee on their investment in place of a franchise. An example, no matter how bad the Pitsburg Pirates are (sorry Pirates fans.......if there are any....) they are guaranteed to play 162 games this year, if they win enough of those games (HA !!!) they will make the playoffs (LMAO !!!). In Nascar, the top 35 are locked into the race because they are the teams spending the money and making the effort to be in the show every week. How many fans would be upset if Dale Jr missed the race because his engine blows up in qualifing. The top 35 is their safety net in these cases (and keeps the fans from storming the Nascar trailer like the Bastille ). Nascar considered going to a franchise system, but that would give the owners too much power (again see Big Bill Frances' influence...) and could/ would pave the way for an owners association or drivers union. Is it a perfect system ??? Not really but it's the best option and keeps the game open to everyone who wants to play.

Harry, the Yankees blow through the salary cap every year, they pay a fine to the leauge and that does little to stop them. Nascar along with the start and park rule implemented last season also put a new rule into place that limits the number of crew members allowed at the track per team. While a salary cap works in a franchise sport like baseball, football, or basketball, Nascar is NOT a franchise sport, there is no union (Big Bill France saw to that.....). If you don't like Nascar, don't watch. Nobody is forcing you to watch. I don't like football but I don't go around telling the NFL how they should run things. BTW, the Cubs are usually in the top 5 teams salary every year, how much good does it do them ???

This may come as news to you guys who don't watch Nascar, but there IS a "start and park" rule Nascar implemented last season (you whould know that if you watched or listened to my radio show last summer........). The first car to fall out of a race that is not damaged from a crash or mechanical failure is subject to a complete tear down (which cost the car owner money). As has been pointed out, Nascar wants full race fields, some teams don't have money to run full races. Joe Nemecheck would love to run a full race schedual and finish every race but his budget won't let him, he would have to hire more crew members and buy more tires which would put him out of business. In this economy even major race teams are seeking sponserhip from several sources, why do you think Kyle Busch has M&M's on his car one week, Interstate Batteries the next week ??? It's because even these major companies don't want or can't spend the kind of money it takes to fund a team for a full season.

I already posted this yesterday.......... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=39701 -
http://www.dragzine.com/news/check-out-this-fully-functional-supercharged-scale-model-engine/ can you imagine swapping one of these into a Revell Big Duece ????

Does anybody realize that Jaguar actually WON a race in Nascar ??? Check the records, I believe it was 1952, Watkins Glen........Big Bill France didn't have a problem with "ferin" cars back then. As far as carbs vs EFI, wait a few weeks until Speedweek in Daytona, you'll be hearing an announcement about that change coming probably later this year. And for everybody who whines about "the cars aren't stock" go to a f#*&%! SCCA Showroom Stock race !!!!!! They need to sell some tickets. Instead of bashing Nascar, go back to complaining about how much pro NFL/MBL/NBA players make.

Ian, if you can find a set of the MRC Pollyglas tires I think you'll really like them. They've been out of production for a while so you'll have to look on ebay or get really lucky to find them at a LHS. They also did a set of Mickey Thompsons and Firestone Wide Ovals........Here is what you'd be looking for.

Revell National Model Car contest
slantasaurus replied to 2002p51's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was at the iHobby show where this contest was first announced. Revell doesn't really seem all that concerned about attracting younger builders, at the show they also announced a new marketing campaign focused on over 40 builders and getting them back into the hobby. I'm pretty sure if you checked the demographics of the show Gearz it would be 25+, maybe 35+. Most of the younger viewers of that show are probably watching with their Dads, not a bad way to get a few younger builders but I doubt it will be a huge influx. Revell seems to be focused on older builders now, which is a good thing. Do you think we'd get kits like the Chi-Town Hustler, Hawaiian, and new Midgets if they were focused on 15 year olds ? As far as thinking the hobby won't survive without younger builders, think of the armor/ airplane builders. There are plenty of them who were born after WW2 who build that era of airplane. As long as there are car guys, there will be car modelers. Also, as far as I can tell any style of build is OK for this contest. Traditional hot rods or modern street rods as long as you start with a kit on the list and use 50% of it's parts. -
Looks really nice. I'm guessing that your issue with the kit is the way the hood fits, or doesn't fit. I have to ask, did you add plug wires to the engine ??? I know when I built this kit I did and that's where I traced the hood fit problems. This kit has some really tight tollerances and adding wires made the engine cover sit a few thousandsths too high, which didn't allow the hood to close. Hope that helps. Oh yeah, the worst part ??? You can't even see the wires after the engine cover is on anyway..........

Brand new 1987 Buick GNX...
slantasaurus replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There are a bunch of low mile GNX's because they were collectable when they were new and several people bought them and put them away. No surprise that GM doesn't want to honnor the waranty, they'll fight the claims on 2010 cars....... -
Thanks Danno and thanks for the pic Double D. That looks like a nice build and the blower is just what I'm looking for, might almost be a shame because what I have planned will make it hard to see all of the detail it has.

Michaels coupon
slantasaurus replied to crazyjim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Then you missed the 50% off this week..........I used one yesterday to pick up a kit. -
Does anyone know where I can find a resin SCoT blower ??? Perferably to fit the Ardun engine from the Revell 50 Ford P/U. Thanks in advance for the help.
-
Keep working at it, everything you do should improve. What you have so far looks good just keep at it and it'll get better.
-
Yeah, mine too............I think it might be in the same place all of those "missing" socks go....
-
That seems to be one kit that you can't download instructions for, but I'm sure if you email Revell they can help.... http://www.revell.com/support/instructions.html
