scales larger than 1/8 ?
Qwit Pushin replied to dpride's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Should probably give this some serious thought, as I understand the Smokey Yunick '66 Chevelle was 7/8 scale. (Technically a model?), lol -
THE MODELERS' ANNUAL--Winter 2012

Thanks for the heads up, Doc'! I love these annuals and have been eagerly awaiting this one! Merry Christmas! -
A Christmas story
Qwit Pushin replied to Qwit Pushin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Great image!! Yeah, my dad loved bikes as well, owning a number of them throughout his life. That bug, however, was inherited by my little brother who, along with his wife, own 2 Harley's currently. -
A Christmas story
Qwit Pushin replied to Qwit Pushin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's it exactly!! My dad was a painter at American Motors in Kenosha for a few years and then switched to his life's work, auto-body repair. I can remember going to the body shop with him when I was 11 years old. I would be tasked with sanding cars that were in primer and then re-masking them for sealer and paint. I was paid $2.50 per car. He could have paid me nothing, it was the greatest environment for young kid smitten with cars. Added perk was that the shop was well-known for its custom fabrication and trick paint jobs, which meant I saw a lot of great hot rods and customs come together right there before my eyes. Ahhh, the memories.... -
Thanks, Andrew. The Deuce took the most time and remains probably my favorite of all my builds.

What motivates you to build?
Qwit Pushin replied to rbarton's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A better question might be, what doesn't motivate me to build? I can be reading a copy of Hot Rod Deluxe, pulling into the grocery store parking lot and seeing a 'cherry' old, (your fave car here), watching an old movie on Turner Classic Movies and see an old coupe pass by in a scene, you get the idea. I fall asleep thinking about projects - quite frankly, I think that sometimes all this 'inspiration' is what keeps me from completing many of my builds, as I can't seem to finish one before some new motivational pull has grabbed by attention. Good question, though. -
Merry Christmas to you as well. Hope Santa drops a load of new styrene down your chimney. (On any other forum, I suspect a guy might get a poke in the eye for a statement like that, but here it's all good!)

As Christmas Eve approaches, I reflect back on a Christmas Eve long ago. I and my siblings were at home anxious with anticipation, when a winter storm temporarily knocked the power out. About 15 minutes after it was restored, my father came through the front door having returned from work. With a distressed look on his face, he asked,"Did the power go out here?" We responded, "Yes, how did you know?" He said that on the way home he had passed a grizzly site, "Santa hit the power lines up on High Road. There's toys and dead reindeer all over the highway!".....Ahh, memories. My dad passed away about 8 years ago. Aside from being the car guy who infected me with the same bug, he was also a bit of a character, as evidenced by the story above. Merry Christmas, all!!

Automotive Christmas ornament

That's beautiful!!! You've inspired me to summon all those old tricks I learned watching 'ER' and 'Marcus Welby', to fire up my Dremel and perform hip replacement surgery on my poor destitute Uncle who couldn't afford to have it done professionally. "Merry Christmas, Uncle Bill!!" -
...., it's late. Just realized this IS the UNDER GLASS forum. Time for bed.

My contribution to this thread, though I suspect this probably belongs in the 'Under Glass' forum.

Awesome!! Do you know the artist?

Local shop closing - Sad days indeed.

RC Country carries sheet plastic which is near the train stuff, but not the detail parts. Sadly I doubt they ever will. As I mentioned earlier, I had a conversation with the proprietors of Viking Hobby on El Camino, and they commit to supplying the items modelers say they want and will buy. They also carry the most of the magazines you seek. -
Had a 50 percent off 'Michaels' coupon burning a hole in my pocket so purchased a Revell '69 Z-28 kit. I just can't seem to pass those bargains up.

That's exactly how I look at it! If I spend that kind of dough on a classic, ('57 Chevy), I don't lose thousands just driving the thing off the lot. Matter of fact I probably make money if my bargaining skills are in top form. I'd also enjoy the drive that much more!!

Exactly, you just can't replace the first-person experience of your LHS by buying online. Again, if it's not in your area, by all means, fire up the 'puter and order online, just whenever possible do what you can to keep these guys in business. -

I can't tell you how seriously I considered it, however, Doug made it abundantly clear that business had been in steady decline for many years, and that the revenue per kit had also been squeezed to unsustainable levels . He kept his merchandise diverse, too. (Someone earlier had commented that that was one of the keys to success). He carried pretty much everything, but RC and slot cars, as there's a shop just about 6 blocks from his on the same street that caters almost exclusively to that, so there was no need for him to also. He even had two or three cases dedicated to sports cards, (baseball, football, etc.) Sign of the times, I guess, but I for one will miss 'those times'. .......,Reading that last line makes me realize I'm officially an 'old fart'. Oh well.... -

Don't believe I've ever seen a man get this serious about repair work, while wearing a pair of hip-waders and a 'Home Depot' vest, before. -

Forgot to mention Greenfield News & Hobby, I, too, enjoy that shop on my return visits. Modelers in the Milwaukee area are blessed to have such great local hobby shops right nearby. -

Nick, I wish I could remember. I feel certain it was on the North side. I know that the selection of models and supplies had to be good or my dad wouldn't have gone there. I do remember that they had a slot car track that seemed to be very popular at the time - even straight-line, wheel-stander, slot cars - Very cool!! Now I always make sure to hit Model Empire when I come home to visit.
