  1. Patina: "A green or brown film on the surface of bronze or similar metals, produced by oxidation over a long period." -or- "A gloss or sheen on wooden furniture produced by age and polishing." -also- "An impression or appearance of something." -all from the "Oxford Dictionaries". Now I like to see true daily drivers, beaters and rat rods (a much over-abused term), but I don't understand how the term "patina" came to be almost as over-abused as "rat rod". A dirty vehicle is a dirty vehicle, that doesn't mean it automatically has any type of patina. Same goes for the typical rat rod. And (in my opinion), when a clearcoat of any kind is applied over a true patina surface on an actual vehicle, that kills the patina. What's the point- to protect the patina ? Apologies for the rant.
  2. I built one of them as a very crude pro street, before Pro Street became cool, back in 1979. I used some Chevelle parts and it came out soooo wrong but it looked soooo cool. Yours is definitely a nice build and it got my thoughts going about a recreation of my old build...
  3. Just what I need- another kit! I'll definitely get at least one of the '65 Plymouths. Maybe we could see a '55 Plymouth, or a '48 Town and Country woody in the not-too-distant future?
  4. That is one really nice diorama. Outstanding work. Your perseverance is really paying off. Please, take your time, but be sure to post pictures of the finished diorama as soon as you can.
  5. Rich, would you consider a thin acrylic black wash in those letters? I think it might add some depth that would really make them pop.
  6. That Fiat looks nice. I have that kit in the tin- picked it up for a good price at a show just about two years ago. Would you consider painting the headers a really pale tan, to simulate the heated paint? Or, maybe thin flat white over burnt metal metalizer...
  7. Yep, what he said. Paint might seem easier and quicker but the results can be messy and ugly. One thing you can try is to light scribe around the areas to be covered with BMF before you paint; this adds some depth to the lines on which you'll be "cutting" the BMF and makes it easier to follow those lines.
  8. Tony, I would do the interior black with some "butterscotch" touches. I don't think I have any kits that I will intentionally never build. I bought each kit will all intentions of building the kit and I do have ideas/thoughts/plans for each (but they can be subject to change). Of course, I might never build some if time goes too quickly and I build too slowly...
  9. When the price comes down, and the scale is right, I'll probably get a couple of my wife and I. Many years back I made a Fujimi garage diorama; one of the later additions to that diorama was a cut-out picture of me looking in the window of the garage. Why not have scale reproductions of yourself in with your models? They are your own little world; you can do whatever you want to.
  10. To all who are going to the NNL East- have fun and try to not spend a whole lotta $$$! I'll be at a steeplechase in Mineral Springs tomorrow but I'll be with you guys in spirit. "Maybe next year..."
  11. Very cool! I knew you could do it. Have a good time in Jersey.
  12. People did opine on this, and, as often occurs in forums and conversation, the topic veered a bit to personal favorites. Does that really bother anyone here? "Superior" does not always indicate a mark of quality, it can also be used to indicate quantity.
  13. Looking good, Charlie. I am a Past Master Councillor, Babylon (NY) Chapter, back in '73. Lotsa fun and good times.
  14. I don't blame you; I've been there all-too recently. Charlie, I used the maroon over cheap ( Wal-mart or Lowes) gray primer; I have not attempted to spray on bare plastic yet. Sorry I can't help you there.
  15. Charlie, try Testors One Coat lacquers. They have "Mythical Maroon" and "Revving Red", a nice Wet Look clear to go over the colors (but you might not need it) and they dry FAST.
  16. You're a better man than I for this attempt. I'm pullin' for ya on this.
  17. That's pretty cool for a quick build. I wish I had the fortitude to build one in a day.
  18. I've been able to control myself for the past five years; buying just what floats my boat and I do have all intentions to build, but it just might take a while at the rate I'm going. I went thru the impulse buying stage and found that it's not worth it. If I see a kit that has a good assortment of parts that I would use in a future build, I would buy that kit- but those occasions are rare indeed.
  19. If I was ever gonna get a kit purely for nostalgic reasons, this would be it. I built this original issue, one of the "Hot Rod" series and have yet another of those on my shelves... but the original issue will always be one of my favorites. Takes me back to shopping on a Saturday afternoon with my Dad when I was about ... 9 years old .
  20. I've heard said that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Also, "One man's ceiling is another man's floor." And: "I can't define pornography but I know it when I see it." As I said in my previous post: "Not everyone appreciates all types of art." That goes for any genre, any form of any art. That's the way of the world. There are those who look at a work by Dali and wonder "WTF?"; that could probably be said for the Mona Lisa, too. I don't see anyone in this thread discouraging anyone else from building anything. Members are expressing their opinions in this forum.
  21. No. With few exceptions, they all do. See all the previous posts for the reasons.
  22. I didn't even like the over-the-top show rods (nor overdone customs, for what it's worth) when I was a kid. They're an art form, and not everyone appreciates all types of art.
  23. Really nice model, Tulio. Really nice.
  24. I've built a couple more than you over the years- maybe 4 or 5 more- and I think the '67s and '57's are pretty neat, but otherwise... Nah, no thanks. The mark has been around since '53- that's 61 model years- and they still don't have "America's Sports Car" down pat.
