I've Gone eBay Crazy!
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They are the Monogram 1/24 curbside kits. The one I've just received is the original showroom stock issue, molded in red. The one I'm waiting for is the white one with the fender flares and the Martini decals. Kind of hoping it has the stock parts. I was looking on Austin Craigslist today, and there is a 1:1 924 and a 944. Both are asking less than $2000. if I only had a garage... and tools... and money... -
I've Gone eBay Crazy!
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I usually avoid it because the temptation is strong and She Who Must Be Obeyed keeps an eye on finances. This is the one time of the year I can get by with a little spending. Oh, and I just checked the mail and my Flintstone 1927 Roadster body and 1934 Ford Tracknose coupe body came in. I really lucked out on the Mercedes and the 924s. I kept getting outbid and then finally came across these that had no bidders. Anyway, no more eBay till next year. All in all, I spent about $50 for everything. Now I'm really stocked up on projects to start and not finish! LOL. -
I'm so excited... and I just can't hide it! I got a couple of my long-time wants. A few years ago my wife and I started a tradition. Instead of buying gifts for each other at Christmas, we would buy for the kids and family. Later, after income taxes are gone and done, we each get a portion of the refund to buy what we want. A while back I started a thread about the Monogram curbside kits of the late 70s. The Datsun 240Z, Ferrari 308,MB 450SL, Porsche 911 and 924. I loved these as a kid. I would build them, tear them apart and build them again until there was nothing left. Well guess what auctions I just won? Not all of them, but a couple of my favorites. I just got an unbuilt 924 still in the box and last night i won an unbuilt MB 450 convertible and it comes with another unbuilt 924! Got them all for less than the price of a new kit. I'm planning now on doing one 924 stock and the other outlaw style. Now I've just got to find the others at a good price.

Is Hobby Lobby Restocking?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That would be awesome! Yes it is the same car. I lack the skills to do such exacting work, so my plan right now is to strip the damaged body off and build it as if some hotrodder had come across it in a junkyard in the 40s or 50s and decided to go to Bonneville. -
Is Hobby Lobby Restocking?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hobby Lobby used to carry some Tamiya and other import kits. I would love it if they would do that again. I buy from the LHS, but the price on Tamiya kits is just too much for me. With a 40% discount that might change. -
Is Hobby Lobby Restocking?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yep, it would! They don't have a huge selection of automotive stuff, but they are more than willing to find something for you and order it. They are good people there! They also do consignments. Last week I went by and they had 30 Danbury and Franklin Mint cars at reasonable prices. I ended up with a bent Duesenberg for $10. I'm thinking the chassis and engine would make a cool Mormon Meteor style Bonneville car someday. -
I've had luck with dish soap and warm water as the first step. I scrub them with a tooth brush. Cigarette smoke forms a coating. Surface treatments will only mask the odor. Once you have to removed the surface contaminants, try vinegar as Harry said, or baking soda or as a last resort, place them outside for a few days and let them air out.

Is Hobby Lobby Restocking?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hobby Lobby and Walmart chased most of the LHS's out of business long ago. When I traveled a lot, I used to stop at the local shops and see what different things they stocked. One by one, they went out and they all said that when one of those guys came in, they couldn't compete. We have one left here in Austin and I try to go by there and buy something whenever I can. -
I'm glad I found this post. Your MB looks great! I just bought one of these kits tonight on eBay and found this article while looking for ideas. Again, I love it!

Has anyone heard if new stuff might be coming? Any rumors? I got sent to Hobby Lobby last night to get some poster board. While there, I passed by the model section and noticed they were pulling some kits off the shelf. The lady said they were getting ready for some new stuff, but she didn't know what it would be. That 40% coupon helps when I need more than one kit. I just buy it and then go out and come in and buy another.

The patina/rust thing
oldcarfan replied to Earl Marischal's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I remember years ago reading that the Rat Rod movement was a reaction against the slick and glossy, overdone Boyd style hot rods that was the only thing that Hot Rod magazine seemed to be pushing at the time. It also was a slap at the checkbook hotrodders who paid hundreds of thousands for a custom built car that was trailered everywhere. -
Stewart Haas Going To The Dark Side?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm actually a Ford fan in a family of Chevy freaks, but I've always associated Tony Stewart with Chevy. The only thing more weird would be if Dale Jr. decided to move over. -
Looking good! I've been buying up the Tom Daniels kits I had as a child when I can find them. One of these days I'll recreate my youth! LOL

Are you looking for an engine for a hot rod or for a factory stock? It could make a difference.. -
Murphy's Law As Applied To Modeling
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
After re-reading my initial post, I can now also add, "No matter how carefully you do your post, once you hit send, you'll find a misspelled word or a really weird formatting error that I didn't see before!" -
It would be nice to see a new tool developed with fastback and coupe bodies. But this is what we have. It's a 50 year old tool. It is what it is and that's all that it is. If you want better detail, I understand the later AMT 67 Mustang chassis will work under this body, though I've never tried it. If nothing else, it still builds up as a good looking shelf model!

I have checked the forum before and just now found your project. Nice job! I can attest to the Fujimi kit being challenging. I'm working on a couple of outlaw Porsches since seeing Magnus Walker's cars. Currently have the Fujimi 911 in paint and a Revell snap kit Boxter, just for something different.

There are some Murphy's Laws when it comes to model building. The most obvious involves the mutual attraction between carpeting and tiny parts. A corollary to that is that the more important the part is, the more likely you are to drop it. My personal ones ? 1. No matter how good the body looks in primer, once I spray the color coat, I will find a mold line that I missed. 2. If the final color coat turns out, the clear coat will cause any speck of dust or loose hair in a 10 mile radius to materialize and stick. 3. If the paint and the clear coat turn out well, I will decide I don't like the color after all. 4. The model that was available a month ago I didn't know wanted. Now that I want it, it is out of production and only available on eBay for a whole lot. Any others?

Modelhaus Not taking New Orders Once Again
oldcarfan replied to 59-Desoto's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I probably can, but they are pitted and all the stuff that comes with 50 years. I was going to order the replacement pieces and keep the originals. Plus those little fender ornaments were broken too now that I think of it. -
Havana Motor Club
oldcarfan replied to Matt Bacon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Maybe it's time to do a Cuban build. I've got a '51 Chevy that I stole the motor out of. I have a couple of generic 1/35 Army truck diesel engines that are close to a 1/25 diesel. Maybe some mix and match trim and ready to go. -

oldcarfan replied to 59-Desoto's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
That is funny! I have a '65 Fairlane that I am restoring. All the chrome is worn off of the parts. I needed to order those and I've waited too long. I'll have to be quick and order when they catch up. -
First of all, thanks must go to Greg Wann. I came across a thread that said he was still making this kit and contacted him. He got back to me quickly and gave me the order info and a very reasonable $35 price. I mailed off my MO and it was in the mail a day later. He was very patient, even though he had to mail it twice because I forgot to give him the Apt. #! My pictures aren't great, but should give you an idea. These pictures are taken right out of the box. You get a well-cast body, hood and wheels and clear resin lenses. Looks like clean up will be minimal. Due to work, it will be a while before I can start on it, but I'm really glad to get it. Maybe it will even inspire me to work on my EllieMae F150 conversion, yet another project that I set aside. I also just found out that my local Pep Boys sell Pepper Gray in Dupli Color cans. Thanks again, Greg!

Does Bob Zetterman have a contact here on the site? Does he do mail orders? I would love to see what he has.
