Trans Am Racing Series Kits
oldcarfan replied to Xingu's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
On this subject, a while back I was told Patto's Place of Australia has a lot of decals for these types of models, but their website seems impossible to navigate. Does anyone know how to search it and if they have decals for Trans Am? -

How about a Chevy or Ford engined Ferrari or Jag? My dad told me back in the day he knew a guy who had a Chevy small block in an XKE because he wanted a dependable car and he found out that the Chevy engine was also lighter. Mind you back then those were just old used cars. http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2016/05/09/engine-swap-a-bration-concorso-italiano-highlights-once-repowered-ferraris/

Sorry, I built the teardrop in about 4 hours one saturday when I was bored. I am thinking of doing another one. -
Trans Am Racing Series Kits
oldcarfan replied to Xingu's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The resin bodies are usually pretty good. Be aware however that some are better than others, they will require a good wash with a degreaser and some of them may have some pinholes and flaws that will need attention and some such as Jimmy Flintstone bodies are usually thicker than a styrene body which will require thinning. That being said, you get some cars that are not available any where else. The new Revell 67 Camaro body has the Minilites and the car itself lends itself well to modification for Trans Am. The Revell Monogram 70 Mustang also makes a good Follmer car with the Fred Cady decals if you can find them. -
AMT 60 Chevy fleetside
oldcarfan replied to Gramps2u's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
OOOOOOH, shiny! Great work! -
Here a few more of mine. The pictures are not that great, but I had fun! First the 1950 Ford with the optional expensive red cotton fiber gas cap. This is a conversion I built back before the stock parts got added to the kit. A 1950 Chevy that I made into a base model, no side rear windows. The red 1960 Ford is from Modelhaus. The back one is a conversion using an AMT 1953 F100 for the bed and frame.

Anyone casting a 55 Chevy sedan delivery?
oldcarfan replied to Craig Irwin's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Bandit Resin used to make one, not sure of the quality or availability. If you are open to diecast, these show up fairly often. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-Chevy-Sedan-Delivery-Metal-Display-pc-used-needs-some-cleaning-/351726381253?hash=item51e486a8c5:g:k08AAOSwh-1W3aqG -
Who says all Mustang II's are ugly
oldcarfan replied to rusty85's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I often think the II has gotten a bad rap. People like to deride the Mustang II, but it was a product of its time. It was designed for a buying public that no longer cared about performance after the hangover that came from the excesses of the 60s. We can't make fun of its Pinto chassis without remembering that the original Mustang rode on the Falcon chassis which was the Pinto of its day. They were ubiquitous, disposable and made to a price point. For the time they were good cars, especially when compared to their other domestic competition. Chrysler had essentially backed out of the Pony Car market and the Camaro and Firebird were riding on a good, but aging platform. Plus without the Mustang II, where would all of those 80s era hotrodders have gotten the front suspensions for their cars? LOL -
Amazing model car collection

I hope the church hires a reputable appraiser and auctioneer and doesn't just throw them out like my mom used to do! -
Is there a better alternative to Sharpies?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I messed up a Duplicolor and also a Testor's base in the same day. The Sharpie bonded with the paint and nothing would touch it. I'm gonna start searching for a water base fine tip or something. -
I have a book about Chris Craft that of course I can't find right now. I can't find the exact cockpit layout that the kit represents, but I found a couple of other styles. Though by that time they were more or less production line built, you could order a custom layout and also specify if you wanted a bright (varnished mahogany) or painted hull. They had started to produce more of the open cockpit layouts by that time, so you could build one like the kit and another with the open style. Also this kit looks very nice covered in thin mahogany veneer and varnish.

You did a great job on this. I love it!

I guess my hands aren't as steady as they were a couple of years ago. I used to use pen point Sharpies to outline certain features and never had a problem. I tried it last weekend and messed up to fairly decent paint jobs. Does any one know of a water based alternative or at least one that can be wiped off if (when) I mess up?
-
I never built it but I had a friend who did and said there were a few issues but that it was pretty nice. He compared it to AMT.

When I was a little kid, getting a new model required a two hour lecture on how money didn't grow on trees, so there was a hierarchy in my model shopping. It went, MPC as my first choice, then AMT, then Revell. The next tier was Aurora, Lindberg and Palmer. They were at the bottom of my personal list and I would only get one of them if I had to. Speaking of Palmer, I wonder who ended up with their molds?

Hobby Shops in Fort Worth?
oldcarfan replied to Billschneider64's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was there a few months ago. It is a blast. One of the few old time hobby shops still around. -
Model King 1959 Rambler Cross Country
oldcarfan replied to thecrossguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had one of these a few years ago and the instructions had details and drawings on how to modify it into a sedan version.
