  1. I've looked at this one at the LHS. Is the body stock other than being shortened? I was thinking of the brief 70s fad of shortening 1:1 buses.
  2. Loving this so far. I built the Monogram 1/24th version a few months ago and I really like these old trucks!
  3. I came across an old unstarted Revell snap kit Toyota Truck for nothing a while ago and decided to build it up to go with the Datsun 620 that I'm slowly working on. The Toyota was released in 1979 or thereabouts and comes with hard plastic tires open-backed tires and 70s mold technology, so there's not much to the kit, but it comes out alright! The paint is Rustoleum Sail Blue with a shot of DupliColor clear over the top to dry the Rustoleum. The wheels and tires are from a Fast and Furious Honda Civic. I was going for a shop truck look.
  4. Welcome and have fun, that's what it's all about!
  5. I used to build model boats for a living. Wasn't much of a living which is why I don't do it anymore! Anyway, I will be looking for those for sure!
  6. Love it. Just love it!
  7. Love what you've done with this. My parents had in dark brown a matching vinyl top. I didn't like it then, but now I seem to have a soft spot for it!
  8. It's funny you mentioned it. I have one of these SSP releases that I work on from time to time. I'll try to get a picture this weekend.
  9. I don't use Rustoleum for anything voluntarily. It stays tacky for a long time. Krylon seems to dry pretty quickly and of course Dupli Color is best. IMO.
  10. I know the white ones are opaque, I've used them on tires for white walls. As far as covering them with clear coat, I misted a coat on to set the ink and it seemed to work.
  11. For spray cans, Tamiya is good. If you can't find it, you might also look for Testor's French Blue. Over a light grey primer, it looked pretty close to the paint chip I used to have.
  12. Cool, love the MiniLites too!
  13. I think I've only ever seen this model built as a racer. I didn't know they put out a street version. Really nice!
  14. Looks really cool! Smokey and the Bandit the Early Years!
  15. This probably applies to only a small group of us from Texas, but I thought I would put it out there. Hastings is a small Texas based bookstore chain that is going out of business. They mostly were in the small cities. Why should we care, you ask? Well, they have all books and magazines marked down to 70% off. I found a couple of hot rod books and the latest edition of Rodder's Journal there. Not bad for $2. I also found out something I had never noticed. The last couple of years they had been experimenting with carrying model cars and collectibles. The store I went to had been picked pretty clean, but they did have several Revell Mustangs, a bunch of Snap Tites and quite a bit of Testors paint. I bought 3 of the Revell 29 A's just because and the snap kit Raptor to make a modern-day Lightning out of. They were all 50% off. The lady I talked to said they will be dropping to 70% off soon. Anyway, if you are driving through Texas and see one, it might be worth stopping to see if they have anything left.
  16. I know it makes me sound old, but I gave up on NHRA a long time ago. I grew up reading my dad's old Hot Rod magazines with Dyno Don and Grumpy and the like. I built models of their cars and could identify with them. The few times I have tried to get back into it, well, I just couldn't. The business model is not sustainable. From what I can see, the fan base is shrinking fast. The cars are not cars, they are melted lumps of plastic. They've switched from a sport of and for the fans to enjoy to a bunch of guys standing around waiting to go fast for a couple of seconds. NASCAR has the same issues, but at least they have occasionally tried to address it. I switched my interests to Bonneville, Pro Rally and local beater class dirt track racing. Anything that uses an identifiable production car as its basis.
  17. For American subjects, I'm not a fan of big rigs, but I would like to see some of the 30-40s COEs. I sent suggestions for some of the less common pickups such as the already mentioned D-100 and also the Studebaker and International pickups. Also since Revell is doing the first gen Bronco, it would be nice to see a first gen IH Scout.
  18. I don't know of any wagon that will be a direct match for what you are wanting to do. Rocketfin still lists Perry's kit on their site but I don't know if it's in stock. Probably you'll have to scratch it up. The only wagon kits I can think of are the Revell 66 or AMT 64 Chevelle wagons. Not close at all, but the roof structure might be usable if modified.
  19. There are three Hobby Towns and one actual hobby shop in the Austin area. One of the Hobby Towns just opened about two miles from my house. I rarely buy from them because of price. When I do it is usually supplies. If I'm going to pay full retail price, I'll go to King's Hobby which is old line and locally owned. Hobby Town is not bad as such, they are sort of the McDonald's of hobby shops. The selection is the same no matter where you are in the country. If nothing else, they are better than Hobby Lobby, I just wish they would do coupons like H.L. does.
  20. The only certain predictions are that someone(s) will say, "Why is it so expensive? That kit used to cost 25 cents down at the drug store when I was a kid!" and others will say, "None of these interest me. Why don't they put out kit of the 1961 Trallfazz Belchfire 500? Bet they'd sell a million of 'em!"
  21. I came across the busted remains of an old Can Am model that my father built back in the 60s sometime. I'm pretty sure it was a modified slot car body that the manufacturer put out as a curbside. Whatever it was I remember he had built a chassis and engine and hinged the rear deck. I was hoping to restore it, but there were only a few pieces remaining. It started me wondering how many different kits were made of the cars that raced in his class and he other road racing classes. This is all by memory so I have no pictures at this time. The only ones I could come up with were the AMT Elva-McLaren, an unknown Lola T70 and I think there were some other Lola's too. I think Monogram or Amt put out some Scarabs and there were Fujimi's GT 40s and the old J-Car and GT40 MKIV. There have been some Chaparrals by Monogram and Porsches by various companies.
  22. Here is a Dajiban website. It's in Japanese so I don't know that they are saying, there are some interesting photos! http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/r_q_collectibles
  23. I need to get back to mine. I lost momentum when I lost the windshield!
  24. I like what you are doing here.
