No talk about the Round2 1971 Dodge Demon ?
1972coronet replied to gtx6970's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
That was their original plan, some 10 years ago (!!). I remember that the 1971 Demon was announced and that orders* were received , but it was cancelled due to production issues. Related to that was the reissue of the 1975 Dart Sport 360, which was slated as a One Last Run of Fun , fait accompli. Like I've stated one more than one occasion, I just hope that the front wheelbase is corrected ! It's off side-to-side, and has been since at least 1973. Believe me, I'm no fan of certain aspects of the MPC Duster/Demon/Dart Sport kits (for an instance: console for an automatic, but a manual trans), but they're better than nothing. The AMT 1971 Duster 340's guts are easy to bash with the MPC bones. *I despise the embellishment "Pre-Order". Something is either ordered or it's not - there is no grey area. -
Thanks ! Thank You ! Cellphone camera + natural lighting = mediocre photos. I feel that if the sun were out earlier (been overcast here until around 1200), the images would've been better. Thank You Kindly ! I had fun building it. Thanks. Thanks much ! I had that colour combo in mind when I started this build. I've seen a handful of "not-recommended" colour combos, and I just had to attempt to replicate a hypothetical representation. Thank You ! I'm limited as to where and when I'm able to photograph. I live on the 2nd floor (1st story) of an apartment; and, the photos are facing-east, right where the sun rises. If I dropped one of my builds over that ledge, I'd become all short-tempered Celt firstly, then I'd retrieve it (haha). Thanks much ! I'd say the most difficult part was painting those (dreaded) moulded-on seat belts. Thanks kindly !

I'd neglected to mention the (easy) modification I'd made to the dashboard: I marqued a line with tape side-to-side in order to create a separation between the dash frame and the dash pad. Using a jeweller's saw, I carefully cut a line along the marqued area. Then I taped the dash pad, and c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y planed the 'metal' part of the dash until it was just-below the 'pad'. I ran some Tamiya Black Panel Accent through the separation, then primed with grey primer. Then wet sanded the 'frame' to smooth it. Then it was on to the red oxide primer, followed by the Mica Red (aerosol). An easy modification that even a myopic simpleton like me can perform it. The only caveat is: be careful with the 'plaining' of the 'metal' portion, as the kit part is quit thin already. It's easy to burn-through if one's not careful. More detail-oriented folks can either : 1.) Add some P.E. defroster vents and speaker grille, or; 2.) Add that 'metal' part from one of the Revell 1968-1970 Charger kits (similar to how @StevenGuthmiller did with his (awesome) 1968 Coronet R/T Hardtop -- at the risk of presenting his masterpiece as being that simplistic).

MPC 1968 Coronet R/T Convertible Tamiya Light Blue Pearl (Mr. Surfacer primer base) Future/ Pledge Clear Tamiya Mica Red (red oxide primer base) on 'carpet', console, steering column, and dashboard; matt clear. Seats & Door Cards are natural white plastic; Tamiya Light Grey Panel Line Accent (overzealous) Convertible Boot is natural white plastic Tamiya Flat Red on sun visors Inline Tubing 'chrome' touch-up pen on windscreen frame ("dumped" some of the pen's contents into a plastic 'pallet', then brushed-on) I scratch built a brake master cylinder; results are okay -- better than the kit's incorrect 1966 & earlier version; rest is OOB. I'm going to chalk this one up as a learning curve (I have another unbuilt copy which I'll do better with... haha). Stance is too low OOB; I did nothing to 'correct' it. All in all, a fun kit ! Quite happy to have this one back, and in much better condition than the 1967 original. Thank you, Round2 ! Critiques and accolades welcome, as are ad hom. attacks .

I wasn't around in '63 either (haha) -- that was 7 years before my current existence. However, in those 53 years, I can't recall ever having seen a camper like the one in the AMT '63 F-100 either. It's possible that AMT was basing that camper upon a prototype which never saw production; and, just as likely, that camper is based upon some obscure design which was produced in low numbers before its manufacturer going defunct or it was scrapped then redesigned.
-
A truly valid point. Personally, I just don't want to come off as being only negative and nit-picky, and I feel that I'm exhibiting those characteristics regarding the 1971 Demon 340 (and other instances I'm sure). I recognise that @SteveGmentioned (to paraphrase) "Before I sign off on [the camper for the F-100 pickup]" . With that in mind, I hope that Steve [et al.] reads the constructive comments regarding some of the prototype's 'shortcomings', and that he'll address our concerns. **EDIT** Here is the verbatim quote Other than its appearance in the AMT 1969 Chevy Fleetside kit I've yet to find any other reference photos of that exact camper shell, does anyone know if it was based on a real camper top design? It would be nice to know before I sign off on it. -Steve

I didn't see the exhaust tip until I watched the video (a few minutes ago). They do appear to be incorrect ; the size of them alone is off. My word, I sound like a griping old man ! I share your sentiment regarding being critical, especially when criticism - my criticism - is based upon a prototype. I'm just beyond happy that the Demon is available again ! Let the en masse eBay dump party begin !

Exactly what I'm thinking. But, contrary to my most-recent statement; upon again reviewing the prototype's photos, it would appear that the 340 looks better in this iteration. That air cleaner appears different from the original (and current 1976 Dart Sport, ante seq.) ; likewise, its valve covers look better - nicer - as well. I hope that a Six Pack induction is included ! The AMT-specific 1971 Duster 340 will undoubtedly provide some bashing-potential.

My. Word. After what feels like an eternity , the 1971 Demon 340 is back, and in ostensibly MUCH nicer configuration ! I recognise not only a correct brake master cylinder (vs. the complete absence of any on the 1971-1976 MPC A-bodies... not even that crummy 1966 & earlier m/c), but also what appears to be a Torqueflite (the bellhousing resembles that of a T-flite) ! As an added bonus, the offset front wheelbase is now remedied ! Then there's the F-100s ! WOW !!! TWO of them !!! To quote @tim boydfrom a 1987 issue of S.A.E. : "My cup runneth over !" The trailer alone is worth the price of admission ! then there's the camper atop the bed of the Unibody '100 !!! The Revell offerings look like lightening in a bottle ! The '70 Cobra !! NICE !! And that 1971 BOSS 351 !! 2023 et 2024 look so promising !

Thank you one-and-all for the suggestions/recommendations. I feel that the +6,000 reading glasses would be the best bet for me. -
Revell - when they were an independent company - produced a 1970 Grande Coupe (with convertible option, IIRC).
