Some 1/24th scale scratch built diorama details: Windows made using model RR basswood strips and microscope cover slide glass. Security bars, hasp and lock made from styrene. Super simple details compared to what yall are posting here!

I agree with Richard, from what I have seen so far the printing is too slow to do mass part generation. Currently I think it is best suited in the hobby to make masters that can be cleaned up and used to make molds, or small numbers of parts to be used directly. But the technology is moving forward rapidly. I think the impact on the hobby will be positive for builders and kit makers alike.

Since the technology is changing so fast, I would consider using a printing service for now rather than investing in a machine that will surely be out of date in a year (or less!). The last 2 times I used Shapeways they delivered on time as promised. These services can offer more choices of materials and resolution as well instead of locking you into one choice. I try to group projects to save on shipping.

One example of 3D modeling: a 1/16th scale gas pump for a diorama. Printed by Shapeways. Here is the surface detail-it will sand smooth easily, but is typical of this process (for today anyway). I look at it as making my own kit, though the research and computer models take a lot more time than just buying a kit from the store.

Those Studebakers are great- I like the late thirties to late forties Dodges. Specially the step roofed panel trucks. Big fave is the late forties Hudson pick-up.
