Snap 359-in Progress
SpreadAxle replied to SpreadAxle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
This is the oldest project I have going, so I figure I should spend time on it and get it closer to being done. The name on the door should give a hint as to the planned trailer I figure it was time for a mock up, so here it is. A had a few ideas hit me recently and I went with some of them. "Detroit Muscle" I'm not sure if I'm doing the winterfront yet. It's the piece that comes with the Revell AG 359 kit, just ground very thin. As to the bugshield, that's from the Black Widow Peterbilt(Revell AG)kit. I painted it Testors Transparaent Candy Apple Red and added the KFS decals to it. Turned out better than I thought -

I will be clearcoating once decaling is complete. It's just that I was afraid to do it beforehand due to what happened to the last set I had. -

It's this set. Item PB-425102 http://modeltruckin.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_148&products_id=13 These were made b4 Jerry took over, but he offers them. The hardest part is the section for the side of the sleeper. Everything else went on fairly simple. I didn't clear coat these b4 installing them as I was too afraid after what happened to the original set I had from JBOT. I think these aren't as brittle, although I did have a break or 2. They slide off the paper really nice and are fairly simple to work with. Thanks for the compliments, everyone. -

Originally, I had planned on Winslow stripes for this one. They were 2 tone blue and silver from JBot. I clear coated them as recommended. However, the clear coat made them wrinkle up. All was not lost, though. This set from modeltruckin.com was a surprise included in an ebay purchase of a kit made last year. They are a variation of the Winslow stripes. I will need to repaint the interior Oxblood Red, but I like how they turned out. Even with one or 2 mishaps, I think they turned out nice. A little clean up on the stripes and she'll be ready for the next phase. I am curious, since I will be going with the Oxblood Red interior instead, anyone know of a good color for that? -
That's Tim's truck. The KW next to it appears to be his model of the truck from the In Tandem movie pilot. If you do have/get the Movin on kit, bear in mind it's inaccurate. The decals, sleeper, etc, are wrong. Buying 2 kits may be pricey, but if you can get your hands on the AMT W925, I would say try and see who has parts from the Revell of Germany W900 they don't need(spares). You might even be able to do it with the Snap KW. Frame length is about right, but you will need to rework the sleeper and cab into a flattop. And, as mentioned, the rear suspension, and the engine. The Cummins V903 was available in the old Ertl International 4270 kit. Hard to come by, but adding the turbo to that engine will give you the right one. I like the idea of building the "what if" Aerodyne.

Up on the steer axle I will be. On the drives, I'm not sure. Also present are parts from Revell AG's Black Widow Pete which had included 2 hole rear wheels. I stripped the chrome and they are molded in white plastic. I want to use them, but with a tire that looks more like a drive tire. -

Driver's side during repair to the hood. I didn't cut the air cleaner opening quite right and needed to reshape it. I got it fairly close. However, after painting, the putty shrunk a little, so I will have to correct that. I think the stripes will cover that portion of the hood when they are on, so hopefully, after some more reshaping, it won't be visible under the stripe. I also went with the updated, more boxy valve covers as well. -

It's been forever since I updated this one. I painted it when I was home last time, and had so much going on I forgot to post pix. So , here she is with the main color. The stripes will be added as soon as I know all body work is done. I think you'll like the paintjob when it's complete. The color is Duplicolor Medium Gray Metallic lacquer. DSGM347. Cab and air cleaner. Air cleaner, visor, and firewall. I decided to go with painted tanks on this one. I managed to get rid of the hideous seam on the tank ends, with a LOT of work. Passenger side of the hood. -
Revell Peterbilt 353. Not so bad?
SpreadAxle replied to BigBad's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I've noticed that with all the Pete kits from Revell AG, no matter how it's meant to be built on the box, you get a complete 359 kit with the sleeper and all. The Bill Signs kit even has the sleeper, and the regular frame and all parts included. I agree with the others, build it as a 359. Looking forward to some pix. -
If anything, the parts you mentioned would be great if cast by themselves by a resin caster and sold. Even better if that was done along with the correct hood which has been available in resin in recent years. It would save fans a few dollars I would think.

Nice work. -
While Freindship is not worth $40, I would say the one throwing a dollar amount on years of memories is your friend. Money often hurts friendships, ESPECIALLY when 3rd parties butt in. It may have some value in a price guide, but, look at what you're getting. Even in mint condition, the kit is beyond inaccurate. If you were planning on replicating the truck from the movie, you'll spend more than that gathering parts. Probably best just to give the kit back, to save any grief. I don't see where you were in the wrong. I mean, did you plan on taking advantage of him and laugh yourself silly on the drive home? I don't think you're that kind of guy, so I would say the answer to my question is no. I hate to say this, but be careful in any future dealings with him regarding money or trades. Not trying to offend you or bad-mouth your friend, just hoping to save you future stress.

There's a Century Class freightliner leased to Landstar painted up like this, with the gold stripe going the same way. Looks like an 18 wheel football helmet. I see it every so often. -

What's next from Round 2?
SpreadAxle replied to BigBad's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would say bring back the International F2674 or the S2575, the Great Dane reefer, the Trailmobile moving van, and the White Western Star. I have heard Round 2 is looking the old W925 molds over to see if they can be brought back to their original shape. If that's at all possible, then I would love to have the W925, the KW mixer, and even the Alaskan Hauler. -

I have been progressing on this one, although the daycab has gotten most of my attention lately. The color is pactra Daytona Yellow RC Car paint lacquer. Seemed to be close to Ryder yellow. Here it is from the rear. I made some new mounts for the wind fairing. Here's the trailer it will pull. It's an AMT Fruehauf reefer I rebuilt from an ebay purchase. Mods include air brake details, reefer fuel lines and battery cables, and the side door from an Ertl Great Dane. Just a few little things and it will be finished. The Green is Krylon Hunter Green.
