  1. Wow that's nice Jonathan . I guess those are the kit wheels painted gunmetal?? Most of the interior shots I saw on the 'net were red/black so I might have to do my interior similar to yours, it looks great with the blue. Seems a good idea to let you get the parts together before we kick off in a week or so.
  2. It was worth a try eh Jonathan? . You are right, mine is painted with Tamiya (rattlecan as always) Dark Gunmetal and Mica Red on the seats, with dullcote IIRC. I was going to paint mine metallic black, so your colour scheme is a good call . It's a great kit to build, Bob Downie did a review in the Feb 2007 SAE. I measured the wheels on my kit as best I could, the are almost 22mm across the rim, which is equivalent to 21 inch at 1/24 scale. So I did a quick internet search which confirms(!) they are 19 inch http://www.lescinemasdusud.org/slr.html There is a huge car show here in Auckland next weekend at which my model club has a display each year. I will be busy from Thursday evening thru Sunday evening so won't get much chance to start the AMG SLS until the week after. I did get the kit out this morning and had a good look at the P/E sheet, or should I say sheets, there are 3 of them with over 100 parts . Getting my head and fingers round that lot will slow me down even more! I doubt I will use them all, but will wait and see how the paintjob turns out before deciding . Tamiya Pearl White is my first choice at the moment with black spokes on the kit 'chrome' wheels. Paul
  3. Hi Jonathan Thanks for the challenge I'm back at work tomorrow, so progress will be slower but it sounds like fun. Of course, I could always use the SLR I built a couple of years ago Cheers Paul
  4. I like what you've done so far - the wheels look great. Makes me want to start on mine, I too have a PE set, so I will be following your build closely
  5. I'm a bi-modeller too - I tend to buy kits online and paint etc at my LHS By combining shipping on eBay, good savings may be made compared to prices here, plus OOP kits are readily available off the 'net. Downside of course is that Tamiya spraycans run at NZ$15, about US$20 ( ) at the LHS. If (when?) the LHS closes, so does our paint source. Unlike you lucky folk in the continental US, we cannot purchase paint by mail. Importing paint from overseas is virtually impossible. We cannot get Testors', MCW, HOK etc in spraycans over here. So I've just bought myself an airbrush (haven't tried it yet ) but will stilI have to find other paint sources if (when?) the LHS disappears.
  6. At least it was cheap . I'm sure you will make a silk purse out of a pig's ear
  7. Having been away for a couple of weeks I am eager to complete some projects part finished prior to the holidays. Next on the list is the 1932 Ford B400. Despite unseasonable weather here in NZ, I managed to apply some gloss and clear to the fenders, which were then polished along with the body previously painted last year. Don't know about anyone else, but when I reach a stage like this, I can't resist mocking up the kit to get a glimpse of the final product. This often results in chipped or scratched paint, parts falling off etc but I do it anyway This is how it looks at the moment, hope to get it finished prior to our monthly model club night on Thursday and our annual display at a large car event here in Auckland next weekend.
  8. I too get in over my head sometimes, you should see my unfinished projects/ideas in the 'too hard' pile . I tend to build OOB with kitbashing (chassis, engines, wheels etc) to improve my skills. I don't really have the confidence to attempt what you are doing, but who knows, maybe my next DTM will be a curbside so I can use the drivetrain for something like your Amazon - if you don't mind me copying your idea . Erik - Thanks for that, but I am just an average builder compared with others on this forum. In my post of the Audi in the 'Under Glass' section I tried to convey how much I enjoyed building this model. I can highly recommend the kit, it really is easy to put together and was one of my most satisfying builds. (Another is the 1948 Ford Coupe which I built immediately prior to the Audi - both kits were finished in about a week, way faster than my usual time). The decals are made by Cartograph, are easy to apply and need no trimming prior to application. Yes, there are a lot but I put aside a couple of evenings and take my time. Rob - how can my stash match yours if you keep buying kits? If you do go ahead, let me know and I will point out a couple of things about the build. Cheers Paul
  9. Wow, that's some collection. It sounds as though there might be lots of interest to you, could be expensive, you might need more storage
  10. Thanks Patrik. I might make a couple more but two in two months is enough for now Your Amazon has inspired me, I would like to try something similar myself. Having seen the DTM kits first hand, I can appreciate the work you are putting into it .
  11. Not yet. I have just finished the DTM Mercedes Benz I was building in the Foreign Vehicle CBP http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=50426&st=120 I am also well on with a 1932 B400 in the Hot Rod CBP, but I think the 1956 Nomad is calling me . I already have the three paints needed for the colour scheme, and it will basically be an OOB build, big shiny wheels and all, but I am tempted by an MCG photoetch detail set for it - but that depends on how well the paint turns out .
  12. Glad to see you are feeling better Rob The '40 looks great, nice sanding job
  13. Hey Jonathan, thanks for the honour of being the subject in your 1000th post
  14. Thanks Jonathan, but a lot of the credit must go to the kit itself. As is the case for most of my better builds... I posted the Audi here back in November http://www.modelcars...l=&fromsearch=1 also without mirrors! Here is a side by side shot fresh out of the camera - gloss white vs. semigloss black - nice contrast!
  15. Successfully finished the DTM Mercedes Benz without too much drama - almost It only needs rear view mirrors fitting, they are a fluorescent yellow/green on the full size car. I will use a highlighter pen for this which I can get from work on Monday. The kit went together well, nearly as good as the Audi, which is almost perfect. Highly recommended.
  16. That is shiny
  17. Thanks Jonathan
  18. Hope you are going to bed Jonathan, cos my DTM Mercedes is almost done The body/interior needs a little finessing to fit better to the chassis. Tomorrow I just need to build, paint and decal the rear wing and add a few more items to the body (door handles, mirrors etc) and she's finished.
  19. Welcome aboard Erik The S2000 is one sharp roadster and should look cool in pearl blue. I haven't personally built this kit, but Tamiya usually fall together with little effort. Have fun.
  20. Monty, I almost exclusively use Tamiya paints straight from the can. With a little practice, sublime paintjobs are possible. See this topic which was recently posted on the forum http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=50709&hl=&fromsearch=1 It includes a link to great guide on how to apply Tamiya paint.
  21. Good progress today. Finished the interior (24 parts) and got some more decals on the body - might give you a run for your money Jonathan! Made my own 'carbon fibre' paint by mixing a little gold into some Citadel semigloss black.
  22. Last month I enquired about hobby shops that I could visit while spending Christmas in Vancouver. I'd just like to publicly thank Rob McKee for going beyond the call of duty and kindly taking the time to show me round several hobby stores in his beautiful city. Many thanks again Rob, I had a blast and if you ever visit Auckland I'd be more than happy to return the compliment. Can't guarantee it will be raining tho Cheers Paul
  23. Hi Jonathan I had a great trip thanks, Vancouver is a beautiful city and it was great to catch up with my folks. I'm working on the Merc right now, but it has something like 140 parts and 70 decals so I'll go as fast as I can
  24. That's looking great, Patrik, this is going to be awesome when it's done. I'm now back in New Zealand, so hopefully work will progress on my DTM Merc before you finish your Merc, Jonathan!
