Looks good Jonathan - and your workbench looks pretty busy too!

Thanks Chris (and everyone else) The paint was straight from the can, I have yet to use an airbrush

Dug this out from the pile and made lots of progress. Managed to resolve the rear tulip panel to take the 1964 1/2 Mustang convertible boot cover. While I was at it, I adapted the rear seat and doglegs from the same kit to the Thunderbolt's interior bucket. Front seats will also come from the pace car kit. Paint is an auto paint metallic brown from a spraycan, still needs some work to make it shiny. Comments welcome.

My local model club's next theme night is 'Any colour you like, as long as it's not shiny'. Most of my builds are shiny, so it hasn't been easy for me to create an entry for that evening. However I managed to avoid the temptation of gloss and polishing cloths to produce this early Ford. Paint is Tamiya metallic blue covered with Testor's Dullcote. The Revell '37 has basic plumbing and wiring, the wheels are my current favourite, Radirs from the Thundebolt kit, wrapped in tyres and decals from the Revell '32 5 window. The exhaust tips are aluminium tubing and the taillights are Model Car Garage items from the 1932 Ford Coupe sheet. The firewall is gloss white (shhh!) so I hope I can remain a member of Jim's Shiny Club Thanks for looking.

Glad you got there in the end . I'm sure it will be downhill all the way from here!

Thanks for your question David. Some of the displays are by one builder such as the rally cars (all tobacco sponsored, very non pc!), the original builds from the '70's (by a member in his youth) etc. Mostly the displays were grouped together by style/era of car, and the show was just that, a display to promote our club.

Sweet as bro Glad you enjoyed it.

Many years ago my first ( and last LOL) scratchbuilding involved a 1/32 Airfix Escort Mk1 and some sprue to create a British interpretation of my favourite Funny Car at the time (I'm from England). Needless to say, the chassis/drivetrain was pretty rudimentary, I can't remember anything about it other than the sprue, it must have looked like something out of The Flintstones Hopefully my skills have improved over the last 40 years, so armed with a decal set from Slixx (RIP) and the latest reissue of the Jungle Jim Vega picked up on my Canada trip, I set about a version I'm willing to share publicly. The kit had lots of flash and the separate front & rear ends didn't fit the body too well, so not a promising start . Haven't attempted a proper candy sprayjob before, so was going to follow a method used by Tim Boyd in S*E some time ago using metallic red as a basecoat followed by red clear. However, I found some gold and thought what the heck, it's just a quick build so why not give it a try ? I was pleased with the gold/Tamiya red clear paintjob so on went some light clearcoats and the decals. The chassis and drivetrain are OOB except for the injector hat which is from a '62 Corvette (my parts stash is pretty meagre ). I plan to get another kit and build a more detailed chassis to go under this body. Plus some of the more recent issues....

Looks real nice jonathan. Do you sand the paint, either between the colour coats, or before the clear coat goes on?

Looking good Jonathan, you're really on a roll right now!

Wow, this is turning into a great collection of Mercs

Sorry to hear that Brian. Chin up

Mike Did you scratchbuild the side trim?

Hi everyone, I am a member of Miniature Petrol Heads, a model club here in New Zealand. The club displays at an annual hot rod and classic car show held locally in Auckland. You are welcomed to view this year's display at the following link: http://s1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd481/maltsr/Kumeu%202012/ Cheers Paul

Thanks Gluhead (and everyone else) The body was too wide at the bottom and had to be 'reshaped' by immersing alternately in hot water and then cold, all the while being wrapped in rubber bands to preserve the body in its correct shape. A filler piece was then added to the cowl to act as a mounting point for the firewall. It was well worth the effort though, it came out all right in the end

X2, it's a beauty

These builds are cool - keep 'em coming. Here's my DTM Merc with door mirrors added - the highlighter pen worked quite well, applied over silver basecoat.

Thanks Dave, you hit the proverbial nail on the head. The 'fresh out of the shop' look is exactly what I go for in my builds. I can't do rusty/patina. However, I have nothing but admiration for the talented builders on this forum who produce fantastic builds of weathered vehicles. I just prefer mine shiny (like someone else I could mention!)

Thanks guys. The decals were a little awkward in some places, where they covered two surfaces or had to be cut to clear some of the aerodynamic aids. The larger ones laid down without any hassle.

I built the Revell '49 a couple of years ago. It's such a great kit, once you start it you will have all the inspiration you need Here's mine

Finished the 1932 B400 this evening - now posted in 'Under Glass'

My second completed build of the year was started as part of the Hot Rod CBP build at the end of 2011. I began with a Jimmy Flintstone resin body and interior and combined these with the remnants of a Revell Speedwagon kit and an MCG photoetch sheet. Paint is straight from the rattlecan, Tamiya Dark Metallic Blue with Corsa Grey on the roof, which looks more like Corsa Blue to my tired old eyes. The wheels/tyres are from the Revell 'California Wheels' 1967 Chevelle. I actually ended up modifying the Revell interior to fit the body and painted this Tamiya Light Pearl Blue and Dark Metallic Blue. Aluminium tube was used to create the front and rear spreader bars (rear one not visible on photo ) And yes, it has already been pointed out that maybe I should have bobbed the rear fenders - the same was said about my fendered AMT Phantom Vicky last year - maybe I'll do it next time before I paint and glue the fenders to the chassis . Thanks for looking.

I enjoyed building the DTM Audi so much I bought a companion for it, the Revell of Germany Mercedes Benz DTM driven by Ralf Schumacher. This is another great kit, but not quite as good as the Audi IMHO. Paint is Citadel Black covered by Tamiya semi gloss clear. It took all my mental strength and willpower not to paint it shiny as per the instructions .

Painting in the snow
maltsr replied to Rob McKee's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sorry Rob, didn't see this topic till just now - first day back at work . Seems you got plenty of good advice anyways as can be expected from this site. I might not have been much help, I try not to paint in the cold (that's why I moved here) . You could always post the bodies to me for painting, I think summer may have finally arrived here -
I found these on eBay Jonathan The first is in the US but not as comprehensive as the second one from Hong Kong. http://www.ebay.com/...=item45ef102e80 $32.55 inc shipping http://www.ebay.com/...=item58915acbd6 $29 inc shipping The third one is actually for the 722 version, but it looks as though many parts will suit the basic version. It is $20.40 including shipping from China. This is the seller I got my AMG SLS photoetch from - no hassles. http://www.ebay.com/...=item3a6868fd9d
