What's Your Achilles Heel?
martinfan5 replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have a few, One is painting, for me its hit or miss, I can get a decent paint job sometimes, then other times I have send the body to the purple bath several times. I know a lot has to with the paint be used as well. I have found that when I use lacquers I get much better results. But I have been having a hard time finding lacquers that are not metallic at my LHS. And at the same time, I know I am the reason I get not great paint jobs, I get to impatient so I dont wait long enough between drying times. Going along with painting is doing the wet sand then polishing, I can get close to that smooth as glass look, but not there yet. BMF, I am still trying to get better at it, I dont like doing it though, I dont enjoy it, but its worth it, it makes the model look that much better. Overall finishing, Meaning I can get a nice build going , but when it comes time to putting it all together, I get glue marks here and there, I always seem to mess up the windows. Engine wiring is still on of my weakness, Its something I want to get better at, I just need to do it more often to my builds. I have been building for a long time (close 18 years or so), and I am still wanting to get better, my goal is to start doing contest worthy builds for next year. So there are a few off the top of my head, I have been building a long time,( close to 17 years), I am trying to improve my skills and builds. My goal is to be able to show quality builds next year. -

Here is my latest build, Revell 70 roadrunner kit, It is pretty much OOB, I did a little engine wiring but that's about it. It did not turn out as good I as I wanted it too. I still am not good at applying BMF yet. I know the wheel well trim still needs BMF added, I will get that done one day. Paint is MM hemi orange lacquer with a few coats of clear then a coat of future .

If I remember and have time I am going to watch it, I love my NASCAR, but I like to watch all forms of racing when I have the time. I think I will DVR it as well, I am looking forward to hearing Mike Joy calling the race for us state's side, I am hoping that Darrell Waltirp got held up in customs and wont be there -
Didnt hobby depot have a locatoion in Glibert ?, I know they had two location, did they close one down?, I know the tempe location is still open. I am looking forward to meeting you guys as well, my almost mrs. wont be coming, she wants to sleep in and we are not really wanting to bring our baby, she hates being in her car seat , and that would make a very LONG 20 min drive to the swap meet

Well after a little over a week and about six trips to the purple bath to strip the paint, and after four different types of paint, I think I have managed to get a decent paint job I can live with. I still need to clear it but giving it time to dry and gas out.

Vals seems to somewhat ring a bell, but I do not recall websters. I remember when I could tell you were all the hobby stores were, now I know two stores, bench and depot, and I almost refuse to shop at the hobby depot I will have to pass on the bonus points , I never really new the owner's name's , I was only kid back in those days of the stores. The only names I knew and remember is the Gordons that own HL

Havent got much done on the trailer, I added the reflective striping to it, got lights in the lift gate done, built the steps and a tire rack, for some reason this model trailer comes with a tire rack. I still need add the photo etched door handles , just dont have the right type of glue at the moment, and I have learned that model glue does not work well.
