Project: "Inferno" 49 Merc - *Update p17* 3/13/15
JasonFL replied to JasonFL's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This is just about how high the notch will be when connected to the frame. The rear end will sit right where the frame is now. I cut the leaf springs off the rear and glued them to the frame so when I cut the frame for the notch it keeps the back of the frame in place and aligned. This way it helps me keep where the center is for the rear end. This is were I'm at now. I marked off the frame and cut it out. Now just have to glue it in place. -
Project: "Inferno" 49 Merc - *Update p17* 3/13/15

I worked on the rear notches and started getting them in place. First I did a template. I was going to cut it out with built in gussets on top to help hold it to the frame. Plans changed a little and I gave it a clean look making the front rail of the notch a little thicker then the back to match how the frame goes from thick to thin. Thanks to a good friend on here for donating some plastic sheets, I was able to scratch build the notches. I had to cut out 2 notches and glue them together in order to get the right thickness -
That's pretty cool you can do that, Im always amazed at how you guys can do such nice work with a bunch of codes that have a bunch of letters and symbols. I didn't even think it would be that easy. I hope they let you add it.

Yea I noticed HAMB was one of the sites that had the feature, there's only one other site I know that has it (streetsourcemag.com) and it seems to work great. I understand it would slow people up with a slower computer but for the majority of computer users now a days, the loading process isn't what it used to be and doesn't take all that long to load. If its that slow, Andrew is right, your probably better off avoiding that view all button. I'm surprised there wasn't a bigger response, I thought for sure people would of been all over this. Just seems like the right feature for this site.

Thanks Doc. I'm actually moving right along with this one. The camera was acting up last night but I'm going to try and get some shots for ya tomorrow. I still can't seem to get this thing as low as it should be. -
Nose is looking good. I like the first red. Has a little tint of that plum color they used on the prowler mixed with a hotrod red. They all look like some nice colors, I'm starting to really like the flat red more and more.

VW Tiki Type 2
JasonFL replied to Eero's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Wow! This just moved onto my all time favorite models. I'm a sucker for the little details everywhere and knowing you scratch built it all is nothing short of amazing. I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates you giving up your secrets and letting us know how you make all those beautiful details. I bookmarked this page and hopefully I'll be able to put your methods to use. I was hoping you could reveal how you did that great looking sliding ragtop? Again, excellent craftsmanship, I would love to see a buildup page. -
What Revell should put out as Kits...
JasonFL replied to TheCat's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm pretty sure that's the same rendering he used on the show. I think he's got a whole line of models and toys coming out and with the way he is so particular and the way he designs things you would think revell would mold it exactly the way it should look and not just use the current firebird. That would be pretty lame. I wonder how the Interior is going to look if it will be all custom or just stock with a few things here and there. -
Mike, the headlights are perfect. They go right along with it and it's gonna look so sweet when you move the enadlights up and get it all molded in. I like the whole vent idea, keep up the work. It's really coming along

What Revell should put out as Kits...
JasonFL replied to TheCat's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just received an update today on my fb page from "The Official Chip Foose" that in September they are going to be releasing a Revell version of the 68 Pontiac Firebird from season 3 of Overhaulin'. I'm a big fan of Foose's work and the show as I'm sure a lot of you are so I thought I'd share with everyone. Not sure what they'll go for but I'll be keep my open for it. I'm sure it'll be a good kit, the box art looks pretty killer. Take a look, lmk what you think -
Project: "Inferno" 49 Merc - *Update p17* 3/13/15
JasonFL replied to JasonFL's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Yea I thought at it but the whole car is going to be slammed, even if it didn't flip down you'd never see it. Might just say screw the plate and make it a clean build. Thanks for the suggestion Joe. -
Project: "Inferno" 49 Merc - *Update p17* 3/13/15
JasonFL replied to JasonFL's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Haha...hey man, that's one way to do it. Nothing like all that negative camber while being laid out. I actually have already made my notches and cut out one side of the frame, no turning back now...haha. -
Glad I was able to help mike. I'm excited to see how your going to incorporate them with that nose. I personally think all the old school guys will still love this rod. It still has that old school feel with a modern touch. Anyway you look at it, just remember your building it for you, not everyone else, so if it looks good to you then that's all that matters.

Thanks Ken. This was the first time I've done the front like this. I'm also doing the rear notches for the first time, I'll post photos soon. So far everything is good. How did you go about doing your front? -
Well executed. I think if there wasn't any red in the paint work then maybe the chrome would of been the way to go but those red steelies was the right touch. Nice build
-
I was thinking about this a lot and I thought that if you have prowler rims why not do the same headlight setup. It would go great with the narrowed front and wouldn't take away from the nose or overall look. just an idea

Chopped AMT Deuce 5-window: Progress, July 13
JasonFL replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That thing just looks mean in the first two pics so if it were up to me I would go with that look. The rims just fit the car better and seem to match the look of the side vents. I also love how that Chevy hood has that molding that stops. Can't wait to see how this one turns out, keep it going Will. -
Thing is sick! I'm usually not a fan of this body mostly cause I think it looks goofy at stock height especially with those fenders but the way you have it slammed with them rims it just looks mean. That's also one nasty power plant, great build and that grill made all the difference, nice touch.

JasonFL replied to JasonFL's topic in WIP: Model Cars
With all the camber I was having clearance issues with the fender so I made a relief cut on the backside of the spindles, and carefully pulled them forward then filled it. I made some smaller backing plates out of the numbers off an old parts tree and then smoothed it all out. -
Project: "Inferno" 49 Merc - *Update p17* 3/13/15
JasonFL replied to JasonFL's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Did some work on the front suspension. I heated the lower control arms with some hot water and carefully bent them up. Had to remove some of the backing plate on the spindle to really get it up there. I ended up having to remove more so I just removed the whole thing But as you can see with the lower control arms being so high I'm getting a lot of camber. Doesn't show much with the wheel, that was just kinda sitting on there. -

JasonFL replied to JasonFL's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That is very true Jim but I think with hot roding and customization there are a lot of laws being broken...hahaha. The flip plate and the pop up plates mini truckers use on the bed of their trucks are very cool and clean, but I think that's a little out of my build expertise. I was think of frenching it but I'm even a little worried to attempt that. -
Ya, I saw that in your post I just thought it was cool how you paid only $2.39 for a full kit and a dollar for a can of spray paint and your model still looks like you just built it yesterday. Can't beat that. It's amazing how much prices have changed. I don't think I ever paid less then $8-10 bucks when I was a kid in early 90's.
