When I moved out of my parents house around 1978, I left a lot of stuff behind. The closet that held all my models got infiltrated with termites. In cleaning that up, my father threw out most of my model stash and collection. He saved a few pieces, unbuilt kits, that I have to this day with termite damage to the boxes. So like you, when I got back to the hobby in the late 1980s I was pleased to see I could buy a lot of the old kits again. People take this for granted today that tooling from the last 60 years still exists. Try that in any other business!

Let's See Some Glue Bombs!
Tom Geiger replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd keep the Corvette as-is too! It is a cool period piece. Regarding the tail lights, several kits of that era showed installing the lights on the outside as the custom version. I'd check the instruction sheet for this model. It may be period correct! -
I take bench shots just with my iPhone 7. Quick shots that I've taken for several reasons. First to document my progress and post on the boards. Second to see flaws that I haven't seen yet. Photos tend to bring those out. My advise to people always is to take a bunch of photos and then select the ones that came out well. That's the beauty of digital photography, it doesn't cost anything to do this. So click away, and delete the bad photos! And last, I crop my photos using a free program called Irfanview. You can find it on the Internet. This way you don't have to get as close to your subject as to fill in the whole frame. The camera does focus better from a reasonable distance. Then just crop the photo down to the content you want.

Welcome Brad! You will like the Tamiya paints, and a lot of us also use Duplicolor auto sprays.

It is a neat little kit! I built one when it first came out and it went together well. Enjoyable! I do have a plundered second kit plus a coupe that I stole the bomber seats from

Looks good! And if they get damaged you can always print more! -
Hobby Lobby downsizing?
Tom Geiger replied to Gizzy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
See my point above. Hobby Lobby is notorious on having no empty spaces on their shelves. Could they just be filling in with diecast and once Revell is shipping product in quantity again, that be back filled with plastic? -
Scott, here is your Valiant with the AMT 71 Duster chassis and engine bay in it. Chassis wheelbase does need to be cut down a few scale inches.

Hobby Lobby downsizing?
Tom Geiger replied to Gizzy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don’t know if they are downsizing or just filling up the shelves. I don’t know if new Revell has been shipping the volume that Hobbico did, which would leave some space. Time will tell -
It’s very nice! I saw he was advertising for a trade but I didn’t have the Chevys he was looking for. Plus I already have a few of these. One of mine is my current convertible build using the chassis from a 71 Duster kit

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - less than 1/1 scale
Tom Geiger replied to 1967RMP's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Ah curiously gets us all! I just did a quick internet search and the only number that was found in two different web sites is that the movie car is over 17 feet long. Putting my scale ruler against the model chassis, I found it to be 205 inches or 17 feet long in 1/25 scale! Unscientific, but if someone can come up with a wheelbase or other dimensions I’d be happy to measure it off again. It does look huge especially in the seats and such, but 17 feet long is huge! -
It’s never advisable to buy anything from a sketchy eBay seller under these circumstances. First he’s pirated Perry’s kit, then he keeps getting booted for poor dealings. Next you’ll find he’s using a poor quality resin and it warps within a year, dishonesty never is just one or two things, it’s a way of life.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - less than 1/1 scale
Tom Geiger replied to 1967RMP's topic in WIP: Model Cars
It’s in the pile. Don’t know when I will get to it -
and let's hope they sell! As time marches on the cars at car shows get newer since people want to own the cars they remember from their youth. These cars are near 90 years old now and people who remember the 1930s cars first hand are pretty much gone. The classic cars kits were produced in the 1960s when these cars were 30+ years old and a lot of their fans were alive. Let's hope enough modelers want these to make them viable.

Building for Ease of Disassembly....
Tom Geiger replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I only build automotive and light truck subjects... If a chassis (and/or) interior fits tight into a model body, I won't bother to glue it. No reason to and it sometimes works to my advantage. I had a seat come loose and I was able to pull the car apart to fasten it down properly. Can also help with cleaning later on too. I pin a lot of things together and if I have a very tight connection between the hole drilled and pin, I often won't bother gluing things like mirrors and antennia. Sometimes to transport models to shows, I will remove these so they don't break and pop them back on at the show. -
Citroen 2cv Van .
Tom Geiger replied to Silver Foxx's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Very nice work! I have this kit and am looking forward to building it. A bunch of years ago I had a larger plastic replica (I decline to call it a toy) of one of these. I bought it at a car show, and it was missing the back doors and had some plastic melt on one side. I didn't know what to do with it so I sold it on eBay. I kicked myself for years thinking it was the only van version I'd ever see. So I'm very pleased to get this kit in our scale! -
Mike- With the US Forces Germany license plate, shouldn't the nationality oval be USA? I know it was on our cars bearing similar plates when we were in Germany from 1969-72.

Back when CDs came out and people were dumping their vinyl, I pretty much bought every vinyl album I ever wanted at garage sales for a dollar -
1/25 AMT 1977 Ford Delivery Van w/Coke Machine
Tom Geiger replied to Casey's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Bar code and zip code! Reminds me of the antique shop that had an original 1955 Chevy kit... mint and in the shrink wrap from 1955! I got kicked out of the shop for pointing out to the dealer that it had a bar code and zip code! -
Trabant Universal - Progress Report 11-23-14
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Ah! Another thread back from the dead. I've brought this one to the front of the bench as part of the "Bring Out Your Dead" thread and group build. The body is just sitting on the chassis in this photo, sitting a bit high in the front. Once it's together it will sit right. Recent work is the paint job and the black line detailing. I made the decals. Hopefully I'll be finishing it up soon! -

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - less than 1/1 scale
Tom Geiger replied to 1967RMP's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Noel, that's a noble thought, but there are a few things... First, it would have to be a full kit, and there are a ton of parts. It would be a rather expensive resin! It's such an odd bird and odd size that there are no other kit parts that could work with it. Second, I don't know what the demand would be. Third, my copy is so glue bombed, that I don't believe it's a candidate for casting.
