It started back in September when I found this old built up of the ancient Monogram Blue Beetle Model A pickup. I've been on a tear with this series of Model A's so I grabbed the bag o' mess for $10. And here we are today! Sorry for my dark indoor photos, it's snowing outside! And I promised people pictures last week and didn't get time to take proper ones! I reused as much of the original kit that I could restore. The main parts, like the frame, body, fender units, interior, pickup box and engine are all originals. That was supplemented with both old and new parts. I do have a recent Blue Bandido kit and stole the scuba gear, wheels, tire white walls, roll bar and a lot of small parts. I did find that the old and newly retooled parts did not play nice together. Another difficulty in restoring the original is that the chassis, fender unit and pickup box were solidly glued together. I had to clean them up and paint, restore etc it all as a unit. Fortunately the body and interior did come out and apart. The interior is an original and was tough to mask. The seats had multiple curves and no good separation line to scribe tape against. I did these a couple of times and they still aren't perfect. They are originals. The original bed had a bad tire burn in it and I managed to disguise it with strategic painting and placement of scuba parts. The engine is original and the Cadillac script isn't on any of the subsequent releases, including the Bandito. New parts include the radiator shell, alternator (or is it a generator?) and headers. The air cleaners and original valve covers were done in Alclad. I wired the engine with a prewired distributor. Roof is original and took a bunch of work to get ancient glue stains off of it. The body also had a lot of glue and mess on it. I did the best I could to clean it all up and it was primed a few times with Duplicolor gray. The final color is Testors Extreme Lacquer Star-Spangled Blue which really pops! The original tail pipes had flared ends, but were not usable. All of the newer ones I had did not, so I added the ends myself. And the group photo. My ROG phaeton is not in the photo. As I've worked on this Monogram series the past few years I've tried to make each one completely different, with different kit accessories and options. I've had fun with these.

Biggest pet peeves on builds.
Tom Geiger replied to LL3 Model Worx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The older we get, the smarter we get! I've backed way off the pursuit of perfection myself. I still do the best I can, but I'm no longer concerned about it if something just isn't right. People have noticed I get a lot more done these days, and that I have completed a bunch of my old projects that were stalled because something wasn't perfect. Yea, I'm still proud of my models and show them to my friends. But life is short! -

It might be nice to do some group shots... that could reduce down the number of photos for a post... -
Wrinkled Paint - What Happened?
Tom Geiger replied to andy12646's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'll just echo some of what's been said. I use rattle cans all of the time. I use Duplicolor sandable primer on everything. I use Duplicolor or Tamiya paints for color coats. And then I'll use Tamiya clear if needed. I generally don't have problems unless I wander from this... -

Nice job Rich! I look forward to seeing the entire class! -
Thanks Tom! I'm pleased to see you received everything in good condition! And funny to see my napkin on the other side of the country, as I sit here and see the rest of them on my kitchen table!

Very cool Eric! I will be watching, and know you will do an amazing job on this project! When we meet to discuss NNL East themes, we try to make choices that give people a lot of creative room! It's fun to see what folks come up with and how the themes get interpreted. The web theme allows us to pick something new, close to show time. Note that the main themes are chosen more than a year in advance. Actually I already know the 2021 theme. So we can choose something trending a few months before the show. We chose the Chevy because it's freshly out with the custom parts, and compliments our main theme of "Known Survivors". Some of our folks questioned, "So you add the custom parts... then what?" Well, you just answered that question! It's fun to make other people build models!

Nice change of pace! Good to see you back on the board!

I once bought a bag of parts for the Revell large scale slant six engine. I recognized the valve cover, and even though I didn’t even own a kit I thought it was cool to own the bits for $10. A year or two later I found a “complete” slant six in its original box on eBay and was the successful bidder. Upon receipt I found it wasn’t nearly complete. But oddly it needed most of the parts in that bag!

Resin body slowly dying!!
Tom Geiger replied to Lorne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Everything deteriorates over time. It is interesting to hear this about a finished resin model. I have noticed tires shrinking on regular plastic rims on some of my older builds. -
Best to you my friend! Hope things are done and over with by April. Always look forward to seeing you!

Welcome! Your models look great and that's a wonderful way to make use of your time away!

For me, I never got organized enough to place a Modelhaus parts order while they were active! When I'd see them at shows (we hosted them at NNL East for many years) I'd usually buy one of their complete kits. And when they announced the end, again I didn't go through the dozens of old built ups I have looking for missing parts to order. I did place a "last hurrah!" $300 order for a few kits. So for me, it was just the comfort of knowing that they were there. Here's a photo of a group of kits I once bought as a lot on eBay around 2006. I remember that the lot was poorly described and I was amazed when I got it with a low ball offer. It's all early 60s annual built ups in boxes. I was equally amazed when it arrived that nearly every kit had a complete set of Modelhaus chrome in them. I figured that alone cost the original owner more than I paid for everything. So I wonder how much of that Modelhaus gold will never get used on restorations anyway. And as others have said, I don't think we will see a vendor of this class again.

Before my twin granddaughters were born, my older granddaughter went to daycare and was always sick. Now that she is being watched at home along with the twins she no longer gets ill! Still, my daughter teaches first grade so she has to be careful!

77 Chevy van

Good start! I glue chassis stops in many kits just for that reason. Makes for a sure fit and great glue points -
Nice work on a great custom! You have me rethinking my 24 Hour Build selection!

I’m a major user of Testors Dullcote and have never done anything more than dusted it off. In fact when I have decided to do final finishes that are primer, I use Dullcote to seal that in since bare primer will scratch and since it’s porous dust can get imbedded in it.
