BMF question for first timer
Tom Geiger replied to slider51's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
and since you mentioned clearest, deepest lines.... many of us go over the model in the prep stage and deepen the panel lines and lines where we will have to score the BMF once the model is painted. A little preparation can save big headaches later on. A big controversy on that question! I believe it goes on OVER the clearcoat. BMF has it's own unique shine, which is different than clear paint. The contrast between the BMFs tone and the paint's shine is part of what makes it look real! Others will say they clear coat over the BMF to seal it in, so it doesn't peel off. I have models that are 30 years old that the BMF is not peeling. If your BMF peels, it's because you have touched the glue with your fingers and ruined it! -
Wouldn't ya know! I mentioned how the stamp collectors deal with smoke smell, and what comes in the mail to me yesterday? I bought a lot of 80 first day covers (a decorative envelope postmarked on the first day of issue of a new stamp) on eBay and when I opened the package, I thought the guy emptied an ashtray into it! Man, that awful sickening smell of tobacco smoke hit me hard! I went back and looked at the auction, and in the middle of this one big long rambling paragraph the seller mentions, "Smoker is in the residence so there may be a trace odor of smoke on packaging". Um no, the whole package smells like an ashtray! The return address is an apartment so I'm picturing this elderly couple chain smoking Camels with a smoky haze in the entire place. So first round of deodorizing is in motion. All 80 envelopes are in a large paper sack with a bunch of those fabric sheets. If that doesn't work, it will be on to the charcoal.

I never did like the Starsky and Hutch stripe. It has too many odd angles, looks like a little kid did the tape job! -
Speaking of working under adverse conditions, focus in on the worn out yellow board on my workbench. Back in the day, I didn't have a model room but I managed to build my signature model on that board, on the kitchen table. I was building on the board to protect the table. I was working every evening as I was building to a club contest deadline. And as such, I had to set up and break down every single time. At night, I'd have to secure everything and put the board with my model on it up on top of the refrigerator, so my small children couldn't get at it. The one thing it did was keep me working neat, since I had to clean up the clutter, plastic shavings and such every night to put the project away. But I probably lost a half hour a day due to having to get it all out, set up my lights and in the end, tear it all down again! But in the end I had built one of my best models. I did that for a while, until I finished an addition to my old house that allowed me a model room. And I've always kept that same board for sentimental reasons. Then again I know a guy who set up a wonderful modelroom. He even paid a carpenter to build a special workbench, and ya know... he never finished a model! So if you are motivated, no matter where you have to work, you can do it!

BMF question for first timer

As Art said, don't apply any pressure at all to the blade. Pretend you are tracing a line very lightly with a pencil. And for all you newbies. DON'T try it on your nice freshly painted body. Pull a junker out of your parts box and practice on that first -
Come on guys! Back in high school (class of '76) we HATED big station wagons! Those who drove them were at the bottom of the social status. Showing up in a car like this meant you didn't have your own wheels, and borrowed mom's car! And those with ten year old wagons had the family's hand me down wagon as their first car! They weren't cool by any stretch of the imagination. Give it 40 years and we're all sloppy nostalgic for them!

Here's my space! My workbench is an old hollow core door wrapped in brown paper, that sits on two old night stands. The shelves hold my two small parts cabinets, and the blue boxes are all unfinished projects. My spray booth is behind me, you can see the vent hose that goes out the window in the right corner of the picture. I do have a few more clip on lights than in this photo, they all are plugged into one power strip to make it easier to turn them on and off. I have a small tool chest (red and gray) on the left. I don't work directly on the bench surface, notice the board and glass.

Classic! That one's a keeper for sure...

Kevin, gangs of deer terrorize our neighborhood daily! So tame that they just walk up the middle of the street in daylight. They even pose for pictures! Seriously! They'll stand there. All photos taken on my front lawn.

If you go to the website to browse, note that the conversion of one Cuban CUC is $1 US so it's real easy. Seems you can buy a 1955-7 Chevy 4 door sedan, very nice paint, custom interior, Toyota drivetrain with air conditioning for around $25,000 There were other old American cars from $6,000 and up too. Most of them with Russian drivetrains. Always wanted a '53 Chevy with a Russian diesel in it! Then notice that a 2000 Fiat is also $26,000 and a 2006 Hyundai Sorento is $75,000. A crazy auto market for sure!

Today's irk? I went out front this morning to discover that the deer ate the tops off the supposed deer proof perennials that I just planted! All the purdy purple flowers are all gone now!

Hmmmm.... you said it, no comment needed

Dry brush instead of undercoat?
Tom Geiger replied to Markieh's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I believe he's looking to create an undercoat that looks like the brownish stuff Mopar used in the 1960s -
I am anticipating buying the Monogram '57 Del Rio and both Moebius Ford pickups this coming Friday when I see a certain dealer. I also would like to get both versions of the Ebbro Renaults when I see them more in circulation. I eagerly await their Citroen DS.

'29 Pickup
Tom Geiger replied to Brianl's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Looking good Brian! I love the track nose, what did you use for headlights? They fit in great against the guards! I tried to make my own track nose from a pair of '53 Ford pickup fenders, as was done in the era. Only mine came out like this: I thought it looked like a reject from the movie "Cars" and retreated back to the safe home of the stock '29 grill shell! -

Skip- Look at the list of threads. They should have a dark blue star or dot in front of them. The star is a thread you have posted in, the dot means you haven't. Clicking on either will take you to the first unread post. -
The idea is to "warm" the can, not superheat it! There was a story about heating one up in a small pot of water on the stove... and forgetting about it... end result was a purple kitchen... at least nobody got hurt on that one. Could've been quite different.

Do a spoon test. Get some white plastic spoons and spray the back of them. That's how a lot of guys check out colors.

I think we got your used storms here in Pennsylvania, as the storms go east. We've had a few big warnings the past few weeks. Both of which triggered alerts on our cell phones, and were all over the TV, pre-empting programming. We went and sat in the basement for one, and watched the storm progress on TV. That was the one where we got a phone notification (phone screams bloody murder- alert is then across screen) and we turned on the TV, the announcer was pointing to our town on the map! Irony was that these storms get pretty localized. In the evening they showed the aftermath of damage and people were without power for a week in our town. But we never got high winds, and none of the flower pots across my deck even fell over!

Why is it.........................??
Tom Geiger replied to gatorincebu's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
(I've noticed the quoting in reply works a bit funky, though...somehow I got a Tom G quote in my reply and can't get rid of it..) I noticed that too Rob! At first I thought that the entire chain of quotes on the subject was cool, but it doesn't edit well. See above! When I quote someone, I will edit down their post to the sentence or two I'm responding to, so that folks don't have to reread their entire post. I also delete the photos etc, unless that one specific photo is what I'm responding to, again to save board space. I did know you had quoted me because there's the little "Notifications" bell at the top of the page. When it has a red circle number in it, you can see where someone has quoted you. I like this feature a lot. One cool thing I just noticed is that there's an arrow at the pops up at the top right corner of every quote (if you hover), when clicked takes you back to that specific post. -

Gregg, Thanks for all your work! I don't see the button for the members directory. Am I just not finding it, or isn't it here? A thought- Last time I went through the members directory, there were more inactive old members, than current, making it impossible to browse. I noticed that a lot of these were people who signed up ages ago, like 2007 and visited the site a few times, last time within a short period after signing up. Some of them have great user names, that people could use today. Would this be an opportunity to clean this up and delete ancient, never used IDs? And maybe set up rules to delete IDs that haven't accessed the board in 5 (or another span) years? I see guys who do come back to the board that have forgotten their ID, password etc and just set up new accounts.
