What did you see on the road today?

It was time that my Buick LaCrosse got inspected so I took it to my usual shop. They share the parking lot with a classic and hot rod shop so there is always interesting stuff in the lot… -

Gloss vs Satin Clearcoats
Tom Geiger replied to Mike_C's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm not a shiny car guy. As said, regular cars as seen in town aren't all that shiny. There are also degrees of shine, look at the differences between brightwork shine. Bumpers, aluminum trim and later bumpers were more like steel than chrome. My models reflect this. I just hate when people BMF all the trim and then pile 10 coats of gloss coat over the entire car. Heck, the shine level on the paint and bumpers both have their own levels of reflectivity. Back in the day there was a guy who built NASCAR models. He did rather well at contests, but he put the decals on the car and then added those 10 coats of gloss and polished the whole thing to look like fine jewelry. It certainly didn't represent any racer I saw! -

Friendly loveable Squirrels..

In one of my rental houses, I had a tenant named Doug Keller. He was an animal guy. He had a blind pet squirrel he named Helen. Let that sink in! -

Post your truck mockups.
Tom Geiger replied to Mike C.'s topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
A neat old Jeep I saw on St Thomas. It was stretched and a local pickup box was put on the back. But the more I looked at the pictures, the more I was thinking "Hey I could build that!" You know that haunting feeling that won't go away. Started playing with cardboard before committing the design to plastic. This is over a stretched chassis Then we used the NNL East 1/25 scale and centering tool to do the job! Started with the seat area... Then fabricated the box... Since I just had 2 photos, I had to work proportions to get the right look And here we are today.. It's fun to play with plastic! -

Back in the seventh decade of the twentieth century I worked for a large home developer. Now a Wall St listed company. I had picked the big boss up at the airport and he wanted me to swing by one of the developments so he could see some progress. We we’re on the main road in the development and we came around a corner and there’s a box turtle in the road. Suddenly one of a contractor’s dump trucks comes the other way and purposely ran over the turtle right in front of us! Mr H was livid! He told me to turn around and chase the truck. So here I am behind it honking and flashing my lights and the driver gave us the finger. Mr H said he got the truck number off the back and he knew which companies truck it was. So we turned around and went to the constraint trailer where we were originally headed. He went inside, with young timid me on his heels, and all hell broke loose. He had the construction super call the company on speaker phone and the whole office heard him fire that company! I’ll bet that driver lost his job when he got there!

Replying to Expo.. I found it interesting that people I taught to drive a manual transmission went on to buy clutch cars! At least three come to mind! -

I still have my 91 Geo Tracker with a five speed. Over the years Iost track of the number of guys who asked if they could take it for a spin... then realized it was a five speed and they couldn't drive a clutch! Back in the day, our impulsive friends bought a brand new Mercury Topaz at a sales event held at a race track. They went to pick it up at the dealer on Saturday morning and only then realized the car they bought was a five speed and neither of them could drive a clutch! I got the call to come help, so I drove it home from the dealer. I spent the day giving driving lessons to both of them. It got tense when the husband wasn't really catching on but the wife did! -
