Why no kit plating chrome?
Harry P. replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
While there is no "DIY" chrome plating process available, if the reason for your question is wondering if it's possible to "chrome plate" kit parts at home, you can get very close with Spaz Stix spray. -

You started a topic on this in 2011... so it can't be new... -

Not sure, Carl. It was just something I had lying around and it looked just about "right." -

Agreed! What a cool detail. -
So what if the white has yellowed? Just call it "Ivory."

Yes, they have you fill out a long list of any metal objects you may/may not have... stents, artificial joints, metal plates or screws of any kind, even any metal piercings! I told the tech the only metal in my body is the fillings in my teeth... so since they weren't scanning my head I was OK!

Happy to hear that you are well on your way back to your old self.

Got the hood installed. The hood sides don't fit particularly well... But then again, they don't fit particularly well on the real car, either! -

When did color fall out of favor?
Harry P. replied to Lunajammer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Art is right... color comes into fashion and then falls out of fashion... lather, rinse, repeat. For whatever reason, today's consumers favor white and silver cars (the automakers offer the colors that their research tells them the consumers prefer). Back in the '50s people wanted much brighter and bolder colors in their cars. And in the '70s, for whatever reason, Avocado and Gold became very popular colors for kitchen appliances. When was the last time you saw an Avocado or Gold stove at the store? Or a pink and black tiled bathroom, also very popular in the '50s. -

I just don't have the patience to do what he did on the chains. I ordered an aftermarket chain and sprockets. The chain links just snap together, and the sprockets are very close to those in the kit. This is what I ordered... http://www.grandtline.com/products/mrr/mrr details/transmission_components_sprockets.html Oh, almost forgot... welcome to our forum! -

More baby steps. I added the red piping on the seat because that's what the real one looks like. I didn't have the right color of soft, insulated wire, so I took some of what I had (orange) and painted it red. Before gluing it in place, of course. Once I had all the piping glued on I sprayed the seat with a satin clear to even out the tones (but really to hide the CA glue smears! ) Technically, the seat cushion should be plain and the button tufting should be on the backrest, but since they already had the button tufted pattern molded on the seat cushion, I said the heck with it. I'll leave it as is. How many people on Earth would even know that? -

Thanks, Skip. that's exactly what I ordered, along with matching sprockets. -
Simple is good. Very nice model!

Technically these aren't jokes, but they're pretty clever. Some "Deep Thoughts," by Jack Handey... Whenever I put money in the bank, and then later I take it out, I always wonder if it's really my money I'm getting back. Has anyone ever checked into this? One time a cop pulled me over for speeding, and when he asked for my license I just laughed, because my license was expired. Ha ha! Joke's on you, officer! But he didn't get it. If all the people that ride the bus to work every day would just drive their car instead, just think how many buses we could save! Man, those bus riders sure are wasteful. Why do some people seem to enjoy staring at the face of adversity? I'm not sure. Maybe the face of adversity looks like Christie Brinkley. I don't like to see really scary movies at the theater, because afterwards, when I go to bed, I can't sleep because I keep thinking, "Man! That popcorn cost me $5.75!" I think that sitting on the couch and watching TV is a great way to spend an evening, unless I was KIng of the World. Then I would sit on my throne and watch TV. If the lion is the king of beasts, what about the giraffe? Probably too tall to run for office. Abe Lincoln sure was a great president, but I bet he wouldn't last five minutes as a surfer dude. If you can't sleep at night, try this: close your eyes and lie still. Pretty good tip, huh? Whenever someone uses the phrase "same difference," I feel like I could scream. But I don't, because I could care less… Have you ever noticed that when you find something that you lost, you always find it in the last place you look? Why not look there first and save yourself some time? Instead of a welcome mat, why not a "Go away, don't bother me" mat? It's not as friendly, but hey, at least it's honest.

G, I like your new avatar.

Yeah, I talked to the tech at the imaging lab about "open" MRIs, and he told me that it's a tradeoff. Open MRIs are far less powerful than the "tube" style, so the image is less precise (grainier and softer focus). Also, an open MRI takes about twice as long as a "tube" MRI. In my case, the lab I had mine done at doesn't offer the open style, but for people who are severely claustrophobic it would be a great option.

Obviously Tamiya went with a logical business decision here. Why spend the $$$ (or yen, I guess) to tool up a fully detailed engine, when almost none of it can be seen on the finished model? As far as convertible kits with no uptop... isn't the whole point of a convertible to have the top down? How many people (besides you... ) would want to build a model of a convertible with the top up? I do get your point... sure, it would be cool if all convertible kits included an uptop... but the bottom line is the ultimate decider of what goes into any given kit. We all know that.
