Funny, I thought "Don't call it a rat rod" was the mantra of the traditional hot rodders, used out of frustration when the unedumakated or trendster masses call their period or period inspired hot rods by the dirty word. I'm with you, Craig. Might not be held together with bubblegum welds and duct tape, but it sure looks like a rat rod to me.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, it's a pretty frickin' good kit. Chromey goodness...I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of this alclad stuff.
-
I would simply foil the areas and sandwich #11's together, like the lowrider guys do to get their crazy lines. If you haven't studied their techniques you really have no idea what's possible. There are several threads here that show the process well enough to get going with it.

Enamel cut with lacquer thinner
Gluhead replied to Cato's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Sorry, Cranky, Donn, whoever else finds them the best thing since...whenever...but those DO look dipped in syrup. It seems this has become a very common ailment with model car builders - the euphoric state induced by syrupy, candy-like, 3-scale-inch-deep finishes. After my recent trip to the Toledo NNL, I'm half tempted to declare it an epidemic. The tables were loaded with cars that were absurdly shiny. Smooth paint? Yes! Blemish free? Yes! Gloss? Yes! But looking like it was just pulled from a vat of magic fairy juice? No. Sorry, but no. If you can't see it, you're blinded by the bling and no amount of discussion will ever convince you to look at these with an objective eye. Anyway, carry on. I've made my annual objection to cartoony gloss. See ya again next year. -
Love it. Man, this kit is going to bring out some real lookers.
-
I love suede finishes. Deep glassy gloss is fine, but satin has the ability to bring the focus to the lines rather than the surfaces...and sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered. Cool color tone on this one...and ya gotta love those quick builds especially when they turn out this nice.

Postal Jeep...
Gluhead replied to Brizio's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Briz, that chassis is fantastic. The rest...awesome as well! -
Thanks, Tom! Got the panels foiled and threw some kitty hide at it.
-
Chassis is all painted up but I need to tone the floor pan down and repaint a few pieces that I mangled up in the process of raising the front back up a little...I'll post those pics tomorrow when it's all looking good again. In the meantime, I jumped in on the cabin. I often don't prime interior parts...especially when there's good delicate engraving...so I didn't notice the sinkers on the arm rests until I got the first base coat on. That won't do at all, and I'd wished they were separate anyway to make it easier to do a little treatment on those cove areas...so off they came. Tamiya Gold base with a custom mixed Sand and Copper for the inserts and windlace... Body color brought in on the dash and door trim... Time for my favorite part. Foil! Yeah, it really is my favorite part.

Haha Hey I'm taking my sweet time! Actually, I'm just starting from the bottom up instead of top down like you. heheh. Sure. Hinges would be no sweat. I just think it'd be a waste to hide this mill in a full bay. I don't display them with the hoods up anyway. I've already got a Model A project that'll be able to show it off proper.
-
Hey Tom...Yeah, I added about 3/16" to them and redrilled an 1/8" higher. I see you've already got yours sorted out...can't wait to see it all finished up. I ended up making new ones, though, and bringing the front back up just a bit. It was sitting too street machine for the rest of the style. Looks a lot better on this one leveled out to only a slight nose down rake. Toe lee doh! My brother and his wife, and my son and I ended up deciding to go at the last minute. I got this and a couple sets of truck tires/wheels from Modelhaus, plus another set of truck wheels from Missing Link. That is by far the least I have ever bought at that swap...but I couldn't wait to get my hands on this kit.

Far lower than I'm generally interested in, but that's got a lot of potential. Nice start.
-
I'll be watching this one, George! The silver one was my daily driver for 10 years.
-
14's and 15's rock! That's one of my biggest issues with the majority of the aftermarket wheels and recent kit options...they're too dang big.

Revell '50 Oldsmobile Club Coupe 2'n1
Gluhead replied to styromaniac's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Yep. Me, too. 5 stars, Revell! My *only* wish so far is that the armrests and window cranks/door handles were separate...but that's pretty dang minor. -
What's olds is new again! (it's cleared...)
Gluhead replied to MachinistMark's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Lookin' good, Mark. -
That cabin is cool.
-
Some interesting things goin' on with this...keep it up.
-
Thanks, guys...much appreciated. Paint is starting to fly over here. I need to decide what mill to drop in it while stuff is drying. The 303 is too nice to have a hood over it...that's going in a hot rod!

1950 oldsmobile custom finished! 02/1/2013
Gluhead replied to streetmachine11's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Ah, nice! I'm very glad to see how you're handling those sail panels...so much better than just throwing mud at it. -
What's olds is new again! (it's cleared...)
Gluhead replied to MachinistMark's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Looks good. Pretty sure my second build of this one will be red as well. Depends on if I do the strip car or the hardtop conversion next. Sheesh...too many ways I want to do this kit. -
You say that like it's a bad thing! These need to hit the shelves. I have more kits than I could ever build in my lifetime, but I have to dig deep through the stash every time a new project hits the bench for the right wheels & tires. These would fix that problem for at least a third of them.

I could care less about why the large type, but I am curious about why the colors are stated as beige and gold. Either way, it's a real beauty.
