Evergreen Styrene for side mouldings.
zenrat replied to drodg's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks Bill. I got the idea from the Trumpeter car kits which have moulded in slots for the separate chrome side trim. I've got a Lindberg '53 but haven't got to it yet. If using a template to scribe a body then a tip I picked up from somewhere is to use superglue to stick it on. When you've finished scribing it can simply be popped off with a bit of force (for use on the other side) and the glue residue can be sanded off later. -
Yep. Thats the one.

And just 'cause it doesn't react immediately doesn't mean you won't get trouble later on. It's a real drag when your nice shiny polished lacquer clear cracks weeks later because you put it over enamel. Don't ask me how I know... -
Evergreen Styrene for side mouldings.

My method is to use round rather than half round styrene rod and to score a groove on the side of the body into which the rod sits. I find it easier to align the groove (and you can use a template to ensure both sides are the same) than to align a thin flexible piece of half round that ends up being obscured by masking tape in places and keeps trying to spring back straight whilst simultaneously flopping around. It's a bit nerve wracking though taking the scriber to the side of the body for the first time... While i'll glue the trim on before paint this method could be used for alcladded trim after the paint job with a lot lower risk of disaster. I suppose if you wanted to be really true to life you'd drill holes in the body & put pins onto the back of the trim piece... -

It's not the Lincoln. That has a bench seat. -

Well said James. And I consider mine to be toys... -

Skip is asking about exposure levels. What you posted Bill is valid and relevant but does not address Skips question. And having had a quick look at your link that doesn't appear to address it either. Which doesn't surprise me. If US government safety info is anything like ours they won't give you a simple to understand exposure level because a) it's litigation fodder, they don't know for definite what it is (it will vary according to so many variables) and c) they want to scare all users into taking precautions. Also, is Isocyanate present in superglue? Should we be wearing respirators when hunched over the bench gluing on those tiny PE parts with CA glue?

Dumbest Questions Ever Asked On This Forum....

I love duelling morons. My wife's $200 pushbike was bid up to $650 by duelling morons. Heck, for that I threw in free delivery! Jo-Han Turbine Car - i'd love one of them. It's just begging to be built into a radical bubble topped custom... -

There are no stupid questions. Just stupid people. I think you can be pretty sure that is a kits going for $300 it's going to a collector. Or to someone who'll open it, remove the contents to build or cast, refill the box with old sprues and broken parts to the correct weight, re-seal it and then sell it again. To a collector. Most i've paid for a pre loved kit is $60 (+shipping from Canadia to Aus) for the MPC '78 Dodge van. The one that came with the optional dual engine drag set-up & the Crazy Van decals. I bought it to build and I will. Of course last month I found one here at a swap & sell for $25. I'll build that one as well. If buying at swap & sells I always open second hand kits in front of the vendor before paying. How else can I check the condition of the kit? If they won't let me then I don't want it. There'll always be another one along later. -

I'm not sure about that. Some modellers get treated like gods and so might expect to have a say when the time comes... -
A japanese turbo diesel 6 with a Ford trannie in a Dodge. And sitting on a Chevy chassis ('70 Monte). Something for everyone there.

A good professional filter mask is free if you "borrow" it and 3 years worth of replacement filters when you get made redundant. So, I mask up when I airbrush 2 pack but don't wear gloves or long sleeves or goggles. I spray in my shed with cross flow ventilation from 2 open doors and I spray 2 pack on average twice a month in the summer. On the other hand I smoked 30 a day for 25 years, have stripped out asbestos cement board and wire brushed asbestos gutters without protection and have cut MDF in confined spaces again without a mask. So which poses the higher health risk? No point in debating which clear is "best" as everyone will have their own favourite opinion. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough for me.

Man that's a shame. Those were the days. When you could build something in your shed from bits & pieces and then go out and capture the world land speed record. Those guys had balls. -
I've got my Celsior engine mated to the 'cruiser transmission and sorted engine mounts but i'm stalled as I need wheels before I can go any further with the suspension and chassis and i'm waiting for Hobby Link Japan to get in the ones I want from Fujimi. It's also too cold & damp to paint so I can't do that either. However, this does mean i've been able to mate the spare 6 cylinder turbo diesel 'cruiser engine to a C6 for installation in a '70 Super Bee tow truck i'm also working on.

Ouch. I once left a thermometer on the dash of a hire car to see how hot it got in the Western Australian sun. I returned to a hollow tube with one end missing. -
