Yes, real wrinkle paint will be totally out of scale. Duplicolor makes several metallic blacks. At least one is a Toyota OEM color. Shot dry to give a very slight surface texture might also provide a good illusion...or shot wet and slick, then dull-coated.

Wow. That IS nice. One of my own all-time-favorite cars, and your model certainly does it justice. Beautiful.

You're probably right, but knowing the outcome would kindof take the edge off, you know? Seems like it was a real nail-biter, and even though I'm not a particular fan of either team, watching something that close would have been great theater, for sure.

Improved Lighting & Magnification Options?
Ace-Garageguy replied to nitrojunkie's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I'm not getting really intense about color temperatures, but I'm running LED bulbs labeled as "daylight" which, if I remember correctly from my photography days, is around 5500-6000K. I agree, initially it did seem a little harsh, but it's great to work under, and I still have two warm-white bulbs mounted as fill lighting. Like most people, I find warmer lower color-temp lighting preferable for general illumination, but for close-up work areas, the bright blue-white works better for my tired old eyes. -
I really wish I'd seen that last game.

LEDs in Model Car HELP
Ace-Garageguy replied to CryDev's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Pretty cool. I found myself looking down to see how fast i had been going. -
I'm pretty sure the WHY is that a lot of folks are of the opinion you just can't do first-rate work with rattlecans. Not EVERY modeler has gotten the word yet that it's not so much the tool as it is the technique (yeah, ain't that the truth) that sets the better work apart from just showing up. It's always helpful to the less-experienced to show examples of WHY it's not necessary to go out and buy hundreds of dollars of special tools to get results you can be very proud of. I've got more than a few model-car miles under my belt, and I'm STILL humbled and inspired when I see the work of builders like Harry P and Steve G.

AMT Corvette 'Sock it to Me' ?
Ace-Garageguy replied to CEKPETHO BCE's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The point is to make something cool out of the POS AMT kit body. I've got most of the nose off an AMT '59, and it's a LOT better. A little slice-n-dice...I think I can probably handle it. -

UPDATE: From what I've been able to ferret out (and frankly, it wasn't all that hard to find) Photobucket was apparently hit with a DoS attack back at the end of April of this year. I would assume a fair bit of their downtime since then has been an ongoing effort to harden the site against future attacks. There were also widespread DoS attacks on the internet several days ago, and this particular problem with Photobucket (the offline-disappearing-photos-today) MAY have something to do with that. ALSO...a hacker was sentenced yesterday to 29 months in prison after having been convicted of hacking Photobucket for profit. His smarmy little buddies MAY have something to do with the ongoing problems at P-bucket lately. http://www.darkreading.com/attacks-breaches/photobucket-hacker-sent-to-prison/d/d-id/1327379 IF the problem IS THE RESULT of MALICIOUS HACKING or a DoS attack, IT IS NOT PHOTOBUCKET'S FAULT. Blame the cyber criminals and malicious little bastards who think doing stuff to disrupt other peoples' lives is fun and funny. Blame also the widespread lax attitude of internet developers towards real security, and the beyond stupid "internet of things". It looks like the hackers behind this week's DoS attacks used thousands of almost security-free internet-connected consumer devices to overload a main internet "switching" provider. Article HERE: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/oct/25/ddos-cyber-attack-dyn-internet-of-things Tell me...just WHY do people think their toasters and fridges need to have internet access? And IF they are going to be "connected", why are they not provided with reliable security features that deter hacking? Stupid, that's why.

You're absolutely correct about earlier plug wires being smaller diameters. Which is why I said ".013" is a good average diameter to use in 1/24-1/25 scale." A lot of people apparently think scale garden-hose "looks right", and I know how people hate to measure anything and divide to get scale-correct, so i just said "average" 'cause it looks kinda OK sorta for everything...sorta. Some old "plug wires" were simple copper strips. And check out this old T-model. Barbed wire.

Yes, that is the current problem...WAY more severe than anything I know of happening to Photobucket since I started using it many years back. ALL the photos stored on Photobucket are currently unavailable (most photos that show up here are NOT stored on the Model Cars Magazine Forum server; they're stored on Photobucket or Fotki or some other "photo sharing" site and are simply linked to this site, where they display). Any photos you or anyone else has loaded to THIS site directly from their own hard-drive WILL still appear here, as will photos stored on photo-sharing sites OTHER THAN PHOTOBUCKET. Again...IT IS ONLY PICTURES STORED ON PHOTOBUCKET THAT ARE CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is the last update posted by Photobucket on their Facebook page, about 6 hours ago: ⚠ Update: During the planned maintenance last night, we encountered an unforeseen issue. Our team is continuing to work on resolving that issue, and we will provide another update as soon as possible. Rest assured that your information and content is safe. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support.

AMT Corvette 'Sock it to Me' ?
Ace-Garageguy replied to CEKPETHO BCE's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'm just now getting in to starting the kit i purchased last spring (2015). The plan is to build a pretty radical M/SP car, so taking liberties with the body shell is plenty OK. Still, I CAN'T BELIEVE how bad the nose is on this poor thing, now that I really look at it. The changes made to the tooling look like they were done by a bunch of drunk chimps. Not only are the headlights and Moon tank so small as to apparently be a joke, but the leading edge of the hood has a curve going to the REAR of the car (in the center), completely unlike any (and I've seen a LOT up close and personal) of this vintage Vette body style. The nose is way beyond marginal, beyond bad, just about cut-it-off-and-use-something-else bad. I've seen some guys lately refer to this mess as a "fun" vintage kit (I have too, based on what I expected to see on opening the inner bags and my recollection of other AMT C1 Corvettes that were acceptable), but this thing is downright awful. It's going to take a lot of hacking and putty. Good thing I love a challenge. -
No reason not to Bug-engine it. My Beck has a built Bug motor and goes like stink. The only reason to get the Fujimi kit really is for the correct 4-cam Porsche engine, wheels and tires. A lot of the full-size kits got built with the later-model VW 4-bolt wheels, and there are some running around with aftermarket Minilites and Centerlines too. I don't know what you have, but that's an option. Early Bug wheels look rather like the Porsche wheels also, as do the wide-fives in the AMT '36 Fords.

As I said earlier, I understand your frustration. BUT...once I started running Chrome on a Win7 machine (with a blazingly fast cable connection), installed AdBlock, and got the big $2.99/month service from P-bucket, I've only had the standard occasional problems you get with anything online. I get fast uploads, NO ads. and up until about 24 hours ago, my photos have always been online on the forums where I've posted them. I don't post anywhere as much as I used to when the paid service was justified (I had a lot of models and other work on a lot of forums), so I probably don't use P-bucket now as much as some of you. Still, until now, it's been relatively trouble-free from my perspective. And I find if my model car photos don't get posted every time I have a batch ready to go, nobody much cares...including me.

1/25 Paxton Turbine Indy source?
Ace-Garageguy replied to aurfalien's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Hmmmm...The Granatelli "pregnant snake" car commonly referred to as the Paxton is 1/20 scale from MPC. The MPC kit of the other Granatelli turbine commonly called the Lotus is in 1/25. -
The Borg-Warner T10 four-speed was introduced in '57 on the Corvette. It's a high-performance classic, and there's a good one in the AMT parts pack that has the Corvair and Chrysler engines.
-
Depends on the scale. .013" is a good average diameter to use in 1/24-1/25 scale. Figure lotsa plug wires today are about 8mm in OD. That's .318". Divide by 25 for 1/25 scale. You get .0126", very close to .013".

I'm disappointed too that P-bucket is continuing to have difficulties, but few things in life work perfectly all the time, and VERY FEW people do consistently first-rate work on ANYTHING. It's easy to bash somebody who's not doing whatever they do well (as I seemed to be doing to an inexperienced model builder recently), but there are sometimes extenuating circumstances that bystanders have no way of knowing. P-bucket's "unforeseen issue" could be they they've been hacked well and thoroughly by vindictive associates of the guy who was imprisoned within the last couple of days for hacking P-bucket for profit. Or they could have hired an IT staff based on PC quotas rather than ability. It could be a lot of things...and for as long as I've been using P-bucket, I have had remarkably few problems...far fewer in fact than I've had with a lot of other computer and web-based products. I really think we might give them the benefit of the doubt, at least for a few days, and see if they can get their ducks all walking nicely again. I'd much prefer to see Photobucket get their problems sorted than have to waste hours and hours uploading photos to another site that's probably just as potentially unstable.
