slusher Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 What is the best carburetor color and brand paint o use???
Fat Brian Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Depending on the carb I use Testors Aluminium or Gold, Model Master Chrome Silver, or a mix I made of 2/3 Chrome Silver and 1/3 Gold. 1
Snake45 Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 I like Model Master Jet Exhaust from the military colors line. It's a medium metallic steel with a definite gold/bronze/brown tone to it. I haven't painted a carb any other color since I discovered it. 2 1
High octane Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 I've used Jet Exhaust several times and think that it looks good. 1
crazyjim Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 I mix jet exhaust with steel, flat black, and aluminum (all Testors). 1
Exotics_Builder Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Carb color depends on era and carb you are modeling. The colors mentioned above are good choices, Also Tamiya Titanium Gold or Champagne Gold for a 60's era look (I use over silver base). Modern renditions (Resto-Mod or Pro-Touring for example) could have black, chrome or bright silver. 1
charlie8575 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I've been using Testors gold, steel, or aluminum, depending on what appears to be more "right," and I'm happy with the results I get. Charlie Larkin 1
fseva Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 I like Model Master Jet Exhaust from the military colors line. Is this the one (can't tell if it's from the military line or not)... 1
Bernard Kron Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 I mainly use Tamiya X-31 Titan Gold. It has just enough yellow-gold in it to be easily picked out in scale without looking like gold-colored bling. If I want a more subdued look I will use either Testors Acryl Jet Exhaust which has a darker, more brownish tone when applied to a small part like a carb. When applied to larger parts like wheels it looks more like the old Dow anti-oxidant poating applied to Halibrand magnesium wheels. For an even darker color, but with nice bronze metallic highlights I recommend Testors Metalizer Burnt Metal applied with a brush from the small jars and, after letting it dry overnight to cure, buffing it with a soft cloth. Tamiya Titan Gold: Testors Acryl Jet exhaust: Testors Metalizer Burnt Metal On the Blower end plates (the carbs are Tamiya Titan Gold and the blower case is Metalizer Magnesium) 1 1
Snake45 Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Is this the one (can't tell if it's from the military line or not)... jet_exhaust.jpg That's the one. 1
DrGlueblob Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Anyone tried Olive Green w/ just a touch of Gold? 1
Snake45 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) Anyone tried Olive Green w/ just a touch of Gold? Don't need to. I have Jet Exhaust. Edited April 17, 2015 by Snake45 1
Mike_G Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I like to paint the whole carb with Tamiya metallic grey then spray a little puddle of stainless steel or aluminum plate metalizer and let it gas out a bit before I tamp it on to the high spots with my finger, then buff it out- the details just pop out Sometimes I like to mix a little Tamiya clear orange with titanium gold and brush it on 1
slusher Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 Wow, lots of great ideas here. I printed all of them off so i can try the combinations. Thanks for the input guys.
gtx6970 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Carter AVS, I think this one was painted with Jet exhaust. Then flowed a little detailer on it to bring out the details 1
Greg Myers Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Goes to show, some carbs are different colors. Carter AFB's / AVS's tend to be more on the aluminum side, whereas their Edelbrock counter parts are more toward chrome. 1
blunc Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 the Rochester (GM) branded carbs tended to have anodized finish which gives the gold-ish coloring, some Autolite did this also but the Ford 2-bbl and 4-bbl were usually just aluminum finish. 1

Snake45 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Here's what the Jet Exhaust looks like on carbs. Not the best pic in the world but the only one I have loaded up at this moment. 1
