Jantrix Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Boy, am I glad to have this one done. Well, nearly. Still have to fabricate an upper radiator hose and come up with a side mirror or two. Anyway this is an AMT '77 Pacer Wagon. It's been build as a sleeper for this years Cannonball CBP. It's set up as a racer/drift car. I've added the twin turbo Toyota 2JZ from the AMT Supra kit. The turbos are plumbed backwards in that kit so some creative fabbing had to be done. I added an 90's Corvette front subframe and suspension. I modified the kit rear suspension, adding traction bars and a panhard bar. I built a six point roll cage and tucked it as tight to the roofline as possible to keep it as hard to see as possible. I fabbed a drift-style e-brake, using the arm rest as place a 1:1 builder would hide the brake mechanicals. Paint is Krylon and I used a chalk based weathering kit for the surface rust. On to the pics. It's not perfect, but I think it's a pretty convincing sleeper. Also, thanks to Ace-Garageguy for invaluable engineering advice.
Jantrix Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 Thanks guys. There are certain genres of cars that I sort of have a bucket list to build. A surf rod, a Carrera Panamericana racer, salt flats racer, Pikes Peak, etc. A sleeper was high up on the list, and I'm pretty happy with it.
Tom Geiger Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Very cool build Rob!I always liked Pacer wagons. Back in the day I nearly bought one. I was at an Englishtown Fall Swap Meet back in the late 1980s and a guy had a nice one for sale... Red, 4 speed on the floor, 6 cylinder, AIR and nice wheels. Miles in the 60s and he wanted $1500. I took his number and told him I'd call on Monday to take a test drive and buy it. I LOST THE NUMBER! ARGH! What might have been!
Foxer Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 That's definitely sleeping! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...
Jantrix Posted August 25, 2015 Author Posted August 25, 2015 (edited) Yep. Zzzzzzzzzzoooommmmmm. Thanks guys. I appreciate the ataboys. Chuck, I also came close to buying one with a V8 back in '92. The tranny slippage during the test drive and the play in the steering warned me off but I sure did like that car. Edited August 25, 2015 by Jantrix
thatz4u Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Rob, I love the Pacer wagon, well thought out &executed, were do your ideas come from? Al
Jantrix Posted August 25, 2015 Author Posted August 25, 2015 Honestly my ideas aren't all that unique. Most are inspired by whats been done before. I just put my own spin on it. I will say this though. I do spend a lot of spare time thinking about and planning my models. I take notes, I do research, I take measurements, I ask advise. So before I start clipping parts from trees, I have what resembles an outline on what I want to do to the kit, the parts I need etc. etc. Spending that kinda time on a kit, you are bound to come up with some cool ideas. Sometimes it takes a while. It's been four years on the Jolly Roger Merc, and I've only recently figured out how I want to finish the body. She'll be back on the bench this weekend.
Impalow Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Love it! Pacers are sweet... Turbo straight 6 pacers are sweeter! Nice Job!
TFchronos Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Awesome sleeper, fits the label perfectly. Congrats on getting it done early too.
bogger44 Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Now that is truly outside of the box thinking, I like it! Well done, Rob!
Lunajammer Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Love how you set up the engine, looks busy. More to this build than meets the eye. Good luck at the starting line.
