Jantrix Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Begun in August of 2011, I'm very happy to have this one in the completed column. It was very much a situation where technology was the stumbling block. Without the ability to make my own decals, it was going nowhere. However with a high quality ink jet and Bare Metal Foil decal paper, I was finally able to make it happen. Rather than write a thesis on all the work, here is the WIP thread. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/46867-jolly-roger-merc-back-on-the-bench-83015/?page=1 On to the pics. Comments and criticism always welcome.
Foxer Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 That came out totally awesome! It couldn't be more unique! The treasure map decals look good ... and those gold seat buttons ... wow!
6bblbird Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Very whimsical and extremely cool! I was following in the "On the bench section" How did you finally make those decals?
Ramfins59 Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Wow Rob, it's great to see that you finally got this one done. Great job.
crazyjim Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 I was wondering what happened to this puppy. Looks terrific, Rob.
espo Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Very cool build. I went back and reviewed everything you did with this build. I learned many new build techniques that I can see using in the future. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Erik Smith Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Haha, that's great. I remeber looking at the WIP years ago...Only thing I would suggest is cutting the decals where they cross the door gaps.
Jantrix Posted December 20, 2015 Author Posted December 20, 2015 Only thing I would suggest is cutting the decals where they cross the door gaps. I knew someone would catch that. After photos were taken I went back and ran a smoothed toothpick down the doorlines. The decals are rather elastic and they dimpled very nicely into the door gaps. As for how I did the decals, first I laid some tape on the body and drew the shape. Then I laid the tape over some clear blisterpack material. Then cut them out. Then I took the clear templates to the map that I printed on a full sheet of decal paper, and traced around the template, to include the graphics I wanted. After I had the decals cut out, I added a brown border with some thinned acrylic and sprayed the decal bonder on afterward.
Jantrix Posted December 21, 2015 Author Posted December 21, 2015 Thanks very much for the ataboys guys. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
Agent G Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 I see this and immediately hear "Dead men tell no tales". I love it!Great work sir!G
Chuck Most Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 Avast, ye!I will point out one thing- you neglected to detail the windshield and back window trim. But aside from that, it's a fantastic final result. I was keeping an eye on the in-progress on this and was wondering what ever became of it.

Mostly because I'm wondering how to do so, so that it works with the theme. I don't have any gold BMF and doing them black wouldn't look good. Chrome BMF is out of the question. I'd probably have to find some bronze paint, mask off and shoot the frames.

DeeCee Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 That is so very nicely done, something different, but very well executed, i love it !!
1930fordpickup Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 I like it Rob, great way to carry the theme into the interior.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Very cool. Wondered what became of this one.
