Bennyg Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Ben , nice "australianisation" to that Mack ! Where did you source your spokers from ?I go the front ones off a monogram Mack fire engine and the rear ones from a fella by the name Steve Rubb. You can get really good 6 spoke 1/32 rims and wheels from Auslowe now with separate spiders and rims. Have a look on Auslowe site.
SpreadAxle Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Back in 1991 I built my first truck and trailer. It was the amt/ERTL Mack R that was reissued in July of that year. I was truly excited for this kit as the R Model Mack was my childhood favorite along with the KW W900. Growing up in NYC and other east coast cities I saw plenty of them in all types of service. I picked it up as soon as it hit the stores. I liked that reissue of the kit as it came with spoke wheels and square tanks. The truck on the box was red. I built the amt/ERTL Amoco tanker trailer to go with it because I always liked the look of an R Model with a tanker. I still have it and it's been restored twice due to at least 8 moves. This is one I will always keep.
mistermodel Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I watched my dad build most of the original issues starting at age 5.I think I had model cars about age 7.My first rig was a diamond reo about age 11.A reissued diamond reo was also my first truck after picking the hobby up again in the late 90's
NOBLNG Posted January 1 Posted January 1 I don’t recall what kit it was, but it was a Peterbilt. I watched the tv show “Movin On”, so that would make me 13 or 14 years old at the time. I haven’t built one since but I do have an AMT Peterbilt Wrecker and a Monogram 1926 Mack log hauler waiting on the shelf. 2
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 1 Posted January 1 (edited) My first truck models were the first issues of the Revell '56 Ford pickup and the AMT '62 Apache, both mildly customized, and both of which took trophies at the local hobby shop contest...and were subsequently totally destroyed during a fit of rage (not mine). Some time later came the AMT '53 Ford pickup, which I built as a service vehicle with the welding tanks in the bed. Next was another Revell '56 Ford, which I started to modify into a cabover, open double-decker 2-car transporter, and never finished. Long long time ago... Old Buckaroo Posted January 1 Posted January 1 I was gonna reply to this thread but seen I already had nine years ago to this date - sheesh I feel old now. 2
Kromolly Posted January 1 Posted January 1 (edited) To the best of my recollection my first heavy duty truck/semi model was the AMT California Hauler Peterbilt 359. That would have been around 1975-76. I may have been known to feign sick to mom in order to stay home and finish a model with so many pieces. 😁 Edited January 1 by Kromolly 2
Biggu Posted January 1 Posted January 1 Mine was in the very early ‘70’s the Pete 359 California Hauler same box art as the new re-issue. Still have most of it. That not only started my truck modelling but also got me pointed to driving them for 40 years. 1
stavanzer Posted January 14 Posted January 14 The first Truck, got the AMT White Road Boss Tractor in 1977-78. Orange cab and sleeper, black chassis, green engine. I still have the sleeper in my stash. It got painted, but never built. The rest of it has disappeared.
bobss396 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 It has got to be either a Monogram hot rod pickup when I was around 7. Or an AMT 1934 Ford I got when I was 9. 1
Falcon Ranchero Posted January 14 Posted January 14 The very first truck model I built was also my very first model altogether; the Revell 2012 issue 1941 Chevy truck originally bought for my dad's birthday that year, and he tried to show me how to build a kit but I was like 6 years old at the time so I didn't really get into it so the truck was put away unfinished for years until February 2021, when I finished it myself.

Bainford Posted January 15 Posted January 15 By the time I was 10 or 11 I had built a lot of cars, and thought they were pretty darn good (well, my mom said they were), but none of my buddies built so I had nothing to compare to. Then a young fellow moved in up the street, and he was a builder, mostly trucks and planes. We became friends and built together, and it was a humbling experience. He was a year younger than me, and building these complex truck models, and his work was considerably tidier than mine. I learned a lot from that. I was also quite intrigued by the truck kits. It wouldn't be until I was 16 before I attempted my first truck, the AMT Louisville race car hauler (Budweiser edition with the Mustang funny car). I was excited to finally build a truck kit. I painted and built the chassis and engine, which went well. Then I cut the doors out of the cab (for hinging later) and painted it candy blue and candy red, along with a '79 Mustang Pro/Stock to match, but hated to the look. This was long before I learned about paint strippers. Unhappy with the way things were going, I moved on to other projects and the truck was never finished, its bits still swishing around in my parts box. To date, this is the only truck I have attempted, but I have fifteen or so in the stash, and still looking forward to the day I build and finish one. The truck building I see on this forum is truly inspiring.
BKF Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I'm working on the AMT 1950 Chevy 3100 Union 76 now. It'll be my first truck kit. Building it box stock. It's about half complete.
mchook Posted January 19 Posted January 19 My first big truck was the Junkyard Dog Mack. I bought it new when I was a kid, built it and ended up trading it to a friend. When he passed away a few years ago I ended up with all his models and he still had the old Mack. It's a horrible build but I was youngish back then. 1
OldSkool81 Posted February 2 Posted February 2 My Dad was the one that got me into model building at around 5 years old, and he really was into it. So pretty much every Christmas and birthday, I got at least one model, sometimes 2 or 3. My first heavy truck kit was AMT's Diamond Reo that I got in the nineties when I was around 15. To this day, it is still unfinished; it is a rolling chassis and drivetrain, as I couldn't decide on the color due to my limited paint choices back in the day and limited money to buy some more, as all my savings where already going in prevision on my driver's course funds for the next year!😅 I still haven't re-opened that kit's box since!!!
WillyBilly Posted February 2 Posted February 2 I am not sure which was first. I think the Lug Bug, then the Desert Rat. I think the Lug bug was molded in Yellow, and the Desert Rat was molded in orange.
ranma Posted February 2 Posted February 2 My first truck model was way back in 1973. My dad painted it while my mother put the two rigs together for Christmas 1973! Being 6 and listening to my older bro we played with them so they didn't last very long. When Round2 cloned the kit just a few years ago I Bought 20 Of them ! Both the first reissue and the rat fink copies. I decide to build an exact copy "Clone" of that Semi that was for Christmas all those years ago. 2
Brutalform Posted February 3 Posted February 3 (edited) My first truck ever was the AMT Mack R685ST. The one that’s green on the box. I got it for Christmas when I was 10 years old in 1976. I also got the AMT Gulf, and Union 76 tanker with it. I thought that tanker box pic was so cool with the big rigs sitting there in the night. My friend from across the street got the Movin On truck, and we built them together. Everything was crooked, and used too much glue, but there it sat in the white styrene and chrome when it was finished. I didn’t really paint everything back then. I remember on the tanker, I didn’t even put the fuel valves on the bottom. I figured I would just skip this step. And I have the re release of the Mack in my stash today, because of those memories.
