Snake45 Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) Okay, we've shared many way-cool glue bombs. Anyone else got any survivors from back in the day? "Survivors" are models you built way back when, and still have in more or less as-built form. Clean-up and repair is allowed, but please, no complete rebuilds. One key would be paint. Have you stripped and repainted it? It's not a survivor. Original paint, no matter how good or bad, it is. Model should be in fairly complete condition (minor parts missing okay), and in better shape and appearance than what you'd consider a "glue bomb." Let's put a minimum age limit of 35 on this. The model should have been BUILT in or before 1981. The MORE before 1981, the better. Also, we'll allow models that you personally didn't build, such as bought off eBay, swap meet, etc. for eventual resto/rebuild, but is in fairly complete, presentable shape and appears to have been built prior to 1981. I'll get the ball rolling with three of mine. These were all built in the 1968-69 timeframe. Edited May 9, 2016 by Snake45
Harry Joy Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 My oldest survivors - not sure if they count though. From the early 70s, back in the day when pine car derby racers started as a solid block and four tires:
chepp Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Here's my AMT '55 Nomad built in/about 1969. It has reverse-hinged doors from a Revell '57 Nomad and a front clip/engine from the MPC Mako Shark II concept car. Charley
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I have no idea when these were built, or by whom. I got them in a bunch of built-ups, parts and just plain junk. They're both curbsides, and the work under them is pretty crude.
Sixties Sam Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Here are some of mine from the 1960's when I was a teenager. I had a ford Galaxie from each year from 1959 to 1970. The VW bus was a takeoff of the Little Red wagon with a mid-mounted hemi. I hand painted the poison ivy on it - took forever! The model T has a twin blower hemi from a 53 Stude, I think. The milk truck was scratch built from parts box stuff and sheet styrene. I kept them in a china cabinet at my mom's house till 2005, so my sons didn't get at them.
Snake45 Posted May 9, 2016 Author Posted May 9, 2016 Very cool, everyone! These all seem to qualify as genuine survivors! Post 'em up if you got 'em!
Lordmodelbuilder Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Here are a few of my survivors. These were all built in the 70-early 80's. The Comet is a Fast Eddie. Was built & repainted 3 times in the 70's. The 56 F100 was also rebuilt & painted 3 times in the 70's. The white Courier 4x4 was built, then traded to a friend, then I got it back & made it 4x4.
Lordmodelbuilder Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Here are some more that were built in the 70's-early 80's. I did add some BMF to a couple of these in the 90's.
High octane Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 This I built in the early 70's using parts from the JoHan Sox & Martin 'Cuda and AMT lacquer rattle cans. I still have it in my display case today. The paint is original and it is a true survivor.
Lordmodelbuilder Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) Here's a survivor that was built in 1963 by a friends father. He passed away years ago & what was left of his built-ups,partial builds,& parts was put away in a garage. My friend gave it all to me and this is one of the ones that needed lil work. All I did was carefully take the body off to clean the interior. I then reattached the bumpers that I found in his parts. I then waxed the old lacquer paint and proudly have it displayed on my model shelf. Quite a bit going on with this one,but I love seeing how stuff was built & customized in the early days of our hobby. Edited May 9, 2016 by Lordmodelbuilder
gtx6970 Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Built by me , ,,,,a Loooooong time ago . And there's no chance I ever redo it in my lifetime Johan 1969 Roadrunner, I know the colors are wrong,,,but I plan to build another one someday a little more accurate ,,,but this one will stay as is . I have a few others from way back when,,,,but will snap off a few pics a little later maybe today
disabled modeler Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Awesome to see you guys old stuff from the fun days of your childhood or past....very cool...
TooOld Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I have a bunch of survivors but these are the only ones I have pics of right now . All built by me in late 60's - early 70's .
Foxer Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I like this thread .. it's good to see these past builds surviving! I have no survivors from my original 1958 - 63 car modeling days ..
Jantrix Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) Whoops I didn't see the '81 cut off. I was 13 and none of those models survive. Edited May 9, 2016 by Jantrix
Snake45 Posted May 9, 2016 Author Posted May 9, 2016 I wasn't around in '81... guess I can't play lolSorry, I guess this thread is only for us Auld Phartz. Unless of course you've managed to acquire something that was built before 1981.
1972coronet Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Lots of really nice and cool survivors ! Some of them look as though they were just built ~! Unfortunately , the 1987 Whittier Earthquake wiped-out 99 % of my collection that was built prior to the date it struck . There was one survivor : the MPC 1/16 scale Cobra which I'd built in 1984 . However , it was sacrificed in order to restore another Cobra in c.1990 .
Badluck 13 Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 The only survivor beyond the 80's is this Model T I built in the late 70's
Maindrian Pace Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 None are my builds, but all built around the time the kits were new.
JTalmage Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Sorry, I guess this thread is only for us Auld Phartz. Unless of course you've managed to acquire something that was built before 1981. I have quite a few gluebombs, but the age of the builds would be anyone's guess.

I could go on for days with the stuff I've bought in the past year or 2. Nothing newer than 1962 and I bet most if not all of them were built pretty close to when they were released
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I could go on for days with the stuff I've bought in the past year or 2. Nothing newer than 1962 and I bet most if not all of them were built pretty close to when they were released I've got a bunch too. Problem is, whenever I pick one up, the first thing I do is "un-survive" them! I tear them down to get them ready to be rebuilt. The most recent ones I have are a '63 Bonneville & a '65 Merc. The Pontiac doesn't look like this anymore, but the Mercury is still sporting the dirt paint job. Steve
