Tom Geiger Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Casey what cars encompassed the "dreaded" L-body Mopars? Is this the Horizon, Omni, TC3, O24 bunch? If they are, I'd be kind of interest in adding a TC3 to collection. I didn't like the looks of the car at the time. But now, they have kind of grown on me. Maybe it's senility setting in? Scott While there has always been a bumper crop of the Dodge Omnis in various stripes, The Plymouth Horizon TC-3 is fairly scarce. Not expensive when found, only a lot harder to find than the Omni.
Faust Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 Oh man!I've never seen that TC-3 kit before! That's awesome!I'd definitely buy a repop of that to go with my Omnis!
1972coronet Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 I'm still awaiting for the Chevette and the MPC 1978 Monza ( read : "Mighty Mouse" ) to see the light of day again . Hopefully the latter would be possible. .. ( Every time I even think about the various Monza annuals from MPC, I automatically smell the Sav On that was inside the Whittwood Mall . A similar sensation is catalysed when I think about the Datsun Pickup , Dodge Pickup , and Chevy Pickup annuals ; I smell and feel the Sears in Santa Fe Springs ).
Faust Posted January 11, 2017 Author Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) I misread "Sav On" as "Savlon", which was an old topical ointment. That was very confusing... I'd love to see the Datsun reissued not as a monster tow truck, but in normal form. Wasn't there a version with big swoopy custom decals? California Sunshine, I think it was called. I'd like one of the older ones, too, like "Lil Hustler". Edited January 11, 2017 by Faust

Yes, the California Sunshine was I think done right before they started cutting up the kit, but the cool part of this kit is that it is based off a real truck!
1972coronet Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 "Sav On" was the name of a chain of drug stores ( not sure what the European equivalent would be of a "drug store" --- a nomenclature that's fallen out of favour over the last twenty-ish years in the States . Think : market whose primary 'items' are of pharmaceutical nature ) . Never-the-less. ; Sav On had a unique, but not offencive, odour about it ... And many decades later , I can still recall it to my senses.
Daddyfink Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 This was my preferred drug store for model kits! Getting a model and ice cream made for a perfect visit!
Rob Hall Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Discount Drug Mart in New Philadelphia, Oh was my source for a lot of models in the 80s when I was home in the summer or home visiting from college in the 90s.
unclescott58 Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 I'd love to see the above MPC TC3 kit and a stock version of the Datsun pickup truck kit reissued. I have a feeling they've messed with the Datsun enough over the years, that seeing that on come back in stock form is not going to happen. Another weird one I'd be willing to buy if they reissued it, is MPC's Ford EXP kit.Scott
Edsel-Dan Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 The TC3 kit above is an AMT piceI had THREE of them!!!!Still have 1 I want to build to set next to my MPC Dodge Charger 2.2which is the SAME Body style!! The Drug Store I could by from was "Drug Fair"Got the K&K Insurance Daytona and Rev 59 Fairlane 500 Skyliner& 57 Ranchero their when first re-issued in 74-75Got the MPC 1/20 scale Ford Econoline "Ironside" issue there too
Faust Posted January 13, 2017 Author Posted January 13, 2017 I don't ever recall getting models from a drug store! We had a few good hobby shops in town, but Zellers was always a good place to go. It was a a Canadian department store, and was basically equivalent to K-mart (RIP). K-mart too was good for that kind of thing. Back when I was young you could still buy the paint and tube glue right off the shelf, although you had to make sure you didn't get a glue that had been opened and sniffed. Man, getting the Ironside van at a drug store would be awesome!

Another weird one I'd be willing to buy if they reissued it, is MPC's Ford EXP kit.Scott It doesn't exist in stock form in a technical sense anymore. They made the entire front clip a flip nose before it was mounted to that Monster Truck chassis. There's no telling where, if it wasn't scrapped, the stock frame, engine, and interior would be at this point, aside from all the retooling to the body to make it back to a conventional hood.
David G. Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 I definitely hope the AMC Madator coupe comes back. That would be awesome, and I know my brother and I would get several between us. Well, the Bobby Allison stock car version seems to be the only version issued (a couple of times) since around 1980. The stock version has never been reissued... I found this one at the Desert Scale Classic in Phoenix last year. It had the punch-outs for the rear quarter fuel dump, hood scoop and roll cage so I think it was designed to accommodate both styles. It actually built-up to be a pretty nice model when done. Thanks, David G.
stavanzer Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Nice Matador. Those nifty 5 spoke mag wheels are factory stock, too. From looking at the instruction sheets, I think that the stock/race car Matador kits are only a few parts different. I am guessing that the Bobby Allison kit could go back to stock fairly easily. Might even be a potential 2'n'1 kit. I'd really like to see the Over The Top 1970's custom version come back too. it even has the AMC version of a shaker hood scoop.

American 185 Heavy Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 A very disappointing reboot of a once nice model. (Pinto Pony Express). Way too much flash on this model, and pieces don't always fit correctly either. And the areas to be cut out for portholes and roof skylights bleeds through regardless of how well sanded, primed, and painted. And mine was molded in an absolute awful silver gray which is insane. Save yourself money, and avoid this kit. Spent way too much time fixing mistakes and was still disappointed with the end result. Not one of their better jobs.
American 185 Heavy Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Ahh the site expert. Every one of these sites seems to have a website guru. Forgive the rest of us for relisting something you may have discussed 10 years ago !!

niteowl7710 Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Also since this kit was only released the one time, I think you might be misremembering how good it was the first go around. It's not like the tooling has been worn out be repeated reissues, it's always been mediocre 1970s MPC subpar execution. How is it insane that "yours" is molded in silver, when it says MOLDED IN SILVER right on the box top?
'70 Grande Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 It sounds like Round-2 will be reissueing the 1/25 AMT 1976(?) Pinto, (coupe, not station wagon), kit sometime in 2019. I wonder how it might compare with this MPC Pinto wagon kit when it comes to flash, parts-fit and fidelity.

bismarck Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 I built this kit not too long ago. Didn't seem too bad to me....

Probably the non hatchback of MPC 1974-1977 fame. Compared to the AMT, it fit okay.
