GeeBee Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 While waiting for some 5 minute clear epoxy to arrive so I could crack on with the 48 Ford, I had this listed on eBay, which didn't sell, and as I already have two more of them in the stash, I couldn't be bothered to put it back on eBay, and instead of putting it back with the others, I decided to build it, luckily I already had some VW marine blue lacquer mixed up, so it went onto the bench. The wheels which are supplied on the chrome sprue along with the running boards were placed in a container of household bleach to strip off the chrome, the wheels will be airbrushed silver (Tamiya Silver Leaf) and the running boards will be done in satin black with the chrome trim picked out using bmf, bmf will also be used for the hubcaps, which are molded as part of the wheel, the photo's below are as the body came out the spray booth, no wet sanding or polishing, just yet ... Seats airbrushed in satin black acrylic Floorpan airbrushed in satin black acrylic Engine & gearbox airbrushed aluminium and the fins were given a black wash Wheels finished
Psychographic Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 What did you use for a wash on the engine? I have yet to find a paint or method on silver that looks as good as yours does.
GeeBee Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 Interior panels were first airbrushed in body colour then masked up and airbrushed satin black to replicate the door cards and the seat belts, bmf was used for the seat belt buckles and the door pull Interior coming together, flocking was used to replicate the black carpets Dashboard finished, it was first airbrushed satin black, then masked up to paint the padded parts and the centre plastic section coal black, the switches were picked u=out using a fine brush Interior fitted onto floorpan The chrome plating on the bumpers was very thin, much have been a faulty batch, as the chrome on the sedan I build last year was perfect, so they were stripped, and were airbrushed in a new chrome paint I bought at an IPMS show I went to in November, first they got a black basecoat and left to dry out, The wet sanding and polishing was next ....

These, I used the black on on the engine, I also use for the panel lines around the doors, etc, I don't use the brush supplied in the cap, I used a 10/0 artists brush Edited December 23, 2016 by GeeBee
GeeBee Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 BMF finished around the quarter vents and chrome on bumpers dried out very nice
Psychographic Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Thanks for the information. Beautiful job on polishing that paint, boy does that have a nice reflection.
espo Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Always enjoy your VW builds. Haven't seen a convertible done in a long time. I was not aware of the Tamiya Panel line paint. I'll have to get some of that. The paint really polishes out nice. Interior looks dead on.
Modlbldr Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Looking fantastic! Great polishing work. The body color is a nice choice. I like that chrome paint too. I just picked up some Spaz Stix chrome.I also got a Molotow brand paint pen that has the most amazing chrome I have ever used. They come in a 1mm, 2mm and 4mm tip. I bought the 2mm and am thinking of buying the 1mm. Great for touching up the sprue connecting points.Later-

GeeBee Posted December 28, 2016 Author Posted December 28, 2016 Chrome beltline trim done using bmf Engine lid masked up to airbrushed the rubber gasket
TooOld Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 You're doing some beautiful work on this VW Geoff , it's going to be super nice when you're finished !
Zarana-X Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 (edited) Impeccable work. It is coming along beautifully. I think the Upper cooling tin, over the cylinders, oil pump cover, and the drain plate should also be black. The Bosch distributor cap is a perfect colour, did you mix the paint? Cpt Tuttle Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 This is looking great. I guess this is the modern Beetle kit? Looks a lot nicer than the old one.....I just looked into the box and quickly decided to make a flat black brush painted volksrod out of that one, lol!
Foxer Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 That paint looks awesome! Your detailing is spectacular and masking the whole engine lid for the rubber trim ... !
Oldmodelmaker Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Very, very nice work. The detail work is awesome. I have one of these in que , so thanks for the ref. material.
Eric Macleod Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 I believe I am going to have to buy this kit. It looks fantastic.
GeeBee Posted January 13, 2017 Author Posted January 13, 2017 Just the rear lights to finish off and fit, plus a few decals and this one will be in the "Under Glass" section, should get it finished tomorrow
