BigTallDad Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 Photobucket should have "grandfathered" in all the old photos as part of their extortion. I'm not a lawyer, but I'm guessing one or more members of this forum have that distinction. Might we have legal grounds for a class action suit? After all, the "bait and switch" premise comes to mind...
Xingu Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 They have grandfathered the existing paid accounts (at least for the time being). The free accounts were the ones that really got hit. I am guessing that is where they are going to make their stand. You get what you pay for. I am sure that someone will try it though. The lawyers get rich and the Photobucket account holders will get a check for $1.80 at some point.
Joe Handley Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 Since I was using the free acct, I wouldn't bother with it.....now if I was a paying customer and/or they locked us out of our pics as a whole, that would be a whole different story.

Joe Handley Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 Yeah, I have to get my stuff off of it still, but yeah, wouldn't care if things spun left or right.
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 ... The lawyers get rich and the Photobucket account holders will get a check for $1.80 at some point.Usually the way these things play out. But I wouldn't mind seeing P-bucket slapped pretty hard, just on general principles.
martinfan5 Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 (edited) As one of those free loaders, I wont take part in it, I have no right to, my only issue was the way they handle it, no prior noticed that I recall seeing, and they could of sent out an email say 30 days out, they had no problems sending out emails stating you needed to upgrade your account or you are SOL. mrmike Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 (edited) I'm glad to be free of Photobucket! I have struggled with the slow response of the site and the ads galore. The whole situation could have been handled better, but they shot themselves in the foot. I have all my pictures on CDs and thumb drives, so I was willing to let my pictures go. Class Action Law Suit, no thanks. Not worth the effort. Edited July 17, 2017 by mrmike
oldcarfan Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 I haven't posted that many photos, nor do I have very many stored on PB. If they want to charge me, I'll either find another low-price or free site, or simply not bother with posting. We've already got more than enough monthly subscriptions without adding another one. If it were cheap and even better if it worked quickly and well without taking forever to load, I might consider it, but the way they did this has totally turned me off of them.
iBorg Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 Legally, I can't see the free users having any legal grounds for suit. A typical contract includes consideration, typically a payment of some kind, for an action. The action was hosting images. Free is not consideration.
Snake45 Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 I wouldn't be surprised to see BotoPhucket say they've "reconsidered" and will now allow the image hosting for the $39.95 a year. If they'd just announced that to start with, there would have been much wailing and gnashing of teeth, but NOW, that sounds cheap (compared to $400), and tens of thousands of people will go for it. I know I would.
StevenGuthmiller Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 tens of thousands of people will go for it. I know I would.I wouldn't even consider it!After the way they handled this, they don't deserve anyone's trust & I wouldn't use them if they went back to being free! There's nothing worse than an entity like this, who should know better in the first place, coming crawling back pleading for our mercy.I already have no respect for them & would respect them even less if they pulled a stunt like that.It would be a completely transparent attempt to mitigate the damage that they themselves created & an attempt to recover some of the inevitable losses that we can see to be apparent, but somehow they can not? I have absolutely no sympathy for them.I believe it's time for them to reap what they sow & just fade away. Steve
oldnslow Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 Just got a notice for PB telling me they will no longer support 3rd site photo hosting and urging me to sign up for their premium unlimited plan . They also said my photos would be available to download from the site if I wanted to. This probably should have been sent out before they started their change over .
2whl Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 Greg....if you scroll down on your page, you'll see a topic marked "actions'. There is a button there to download your photos. It took me a couple of tries, but I was able to rescue the photos I had there.
StevenGuthmiller Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 So how does one get their photos out of PB ?Supposedly you can download them back to your hard drive.I haven't bothered with it myself because I already have all of the same photos saved in my computer & many of them on Fotki.Don't much care what PB does with them. Steve
GaryR Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 I have downloaded almost all my pics from Photobucket. Just under 10,000.This ridiculous 400 dollar fee for third party hosting seems like it might be desperation to save a sinking site.Just guessing. They constant STUPID ads and links, plus the slow or NO service in general is not worth 4 dollars, let alone 400!It took me weeks to download all my stuff, mostly because the site kept failing, IF you haven't downloaded, you really need to! Don't be surprised to see it just vanish soon!Oh, and GOOD LUCK trying to attach your downloaded images, even though they are jpegs, PB has made it nearly impossible.PB SUCKS, get your stuff off today and give 'em a one finger salute!!!
Maindrian Pace Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 On nearly all other boards, if you open most any older threads, including very informative build/instructional/antique picture etc threads that we seemingly all know of, you see a rash of that sickening speedometer extortion image. Photobucket has managed to scar the internet from one end to the other, and who could forgive them for that? My account still works as I am a paying member, but I don't use it anymore and I've already downloaded my photos from it.
iBorg Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 I agree......it really had made searching for old info difficult. Weird thing is they still show up in a Google search.
cobraman Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 Is everybody getting this message from Photobucket ? Reason I ask is that I have not heard anything from them .......yet .
Bill J Posted July 17, 2017 Posted July 17, 2017 In case no one see what this Photobucket ransom means, let me enlighten you. For some years now all the big information technology companies have been pushing some thing with the stupid named "cloud". Their desire is for everyone to put all their information files, pictures and so forth on their magical systems which reside in some mythical place. The serious problem with that is at anytime they can turn you off from access to YOUR files and then ask for a sum of their choosing to get you access again. such as Photobucket is doing.Apple, Microsoft and many others have been pushing "cloud computing" which could and often does also include access to software packages like Office so that you may edit and create documents. The danger of losing the files or access to software on the cloud has always been real but you're told to participate because it's such a great deal. You can access your files from any device, etc, etc. This has always been a serious risk for businesses which may have proprietary information within files or design data within photos. Smart businesses have always avoided the cloud and invested in storage solutions that they can secure. A few cases of businesses suffering from cloud outages or mechanical failure have occurred in the past and will occur again to people that are careless enough to put their trust into companies that could actually care less about your data, personal or business. Please take the Photobucket lesson and keep your own data where you have control over it. You can find another photo hosting site that will allow you to post pictures (3rd party posting) but always keep copies on your own systems and the same applies to other files, trust no company with all your data, they can be hacked, shut down or start charging some outrageous fees to "allow" you access to your files.

The difference is free vs paid. It's free, you aren't entitled to anything. When you pay for cloud services, you should read your contract or the terms and conditions. I use the cloud for everything, but I have everything stored locally as well. I have everything in the cloud for access, but I don't trust it 100%. Servers can be compromised. There is nothing wrong with the cloud, but if anyone thinks they are going to sue a company for revoking a free privilege, then they are wasting their time. it was free, you are not entitled to anything. If you lost files because of this, that is 100% on you and you deserve nothing
