Rocking Rodney Rat Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 (edited) I got inspired by this Thom Taylor drawing KK sent me and decided it would make a good jumping off point for a roadster pickup build. So I started gathering parts. The body is from the recently reissued Monogram Blue Bandito kit. The wire wheels are from the Revell '32 sedan...(I know some of you purists (ADL) will howl about the big radial rear meats but I kinda like 'em)...other bits and pieces from here and there (many from the Revell Model A kits). The pickup bed will be scratched together. I'm waiting for the 3D printed Frenzel blower I acquired to arrive... -RRR Edited November 25, 2017 by Rocking Rodney Rat
Tom Geiger Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 Great Idea! I am watching. I hope to one day have a 1:1 roadster pickup like this, bucket list item ya know! Here's what I did with that '29.
squirrel886 Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 Mmm, mmm, mmm, this is going to be another sweet build!
Spex84 Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 Hear that sound? That's me, howling Looks like a great start, looking forward to watching the project progress! *cough* RepMinCo's wire wheels and tall/taller firestones would match the drawing quite nicely...hehe.

Yes, these RMCM wires definitely fit the pic and I did consider using them, but a seriously dropped front axle would be needed to get the car close to the earth. Besides they're not chrome and I have a pile of the Revell wires, I don't think I've ever used them before... -RRR
Dennis Lacy Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 That's a nice looking pile of parts you got there! What are the front tires?
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted November 11, 2017 Author Posted November 11, 2017 The fronts are from an olde Revell Parts pack. They are a bit wider than the ones found in the Miss Deal. I've never seen them in any other kit... -RRR
Spex84 Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 Wow, vintage unobtanium tires! All is forgiven I had forgotten about that particular parts pack. Those front tires are wider than I would have guessed.

You're not worried about the tires melting the wheels?

I have purchased several of those parts packs, they don't generally go for too much $$$... -RRR
DrKerry Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 Koolness!!!!! Can’t wait to see it come together!!!!!!

I saw it evidenced on a Car Model cover car, a funny car (The Vulture) made an appearance in 2016 at DSC12 on the display only table, tire/rim melt was plainly evident (keep in mind this is over 40 years old and not my model). if it's a concern, a coat of "future" floor polish between the rim and tire has been postulated to resolve this problem, another fix may be BMF the rim where it will touch the tire.
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted November 12, 2017 Author Posted November 12, 2017 I've been building since the mid 80's, don't think I've ever seen this on any of my builds...first time for everything I know.... -RRR
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted November 13, 2017 Author Posted November 13, 2017 (edited) I realized that if I want to get this thing sitting low, I'd need to make some changes to the front suspension. I grabbed the axle/spring assembly from the Slingster dragster kit, z'd the frame and fabbed up a suicide perch....much better....next up, channeling the body over the frame and a subtle body mod...stay tuned... -RRR Edited November 13, 2017 by Rocking Rodney Rat
Kit Karson Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 RRR's Wires The rears are from the Revell 32 roadster. Fronts from the old Revell parts pack, slightly wider ones. -RRR

RRR, There's a set of these stacked in the back of the K&R Kustoms+Rods Woodstock Shop that could be crated & shipped this week!?. -KK
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted November 15, 2017 Author Posted November 15, 2017 Thanks, KK, but those tires are way too tall for this project. I cut off the back section of the body, made a slightly narrower replacement piece out of evergreen stock, I like the mod, makes the body a tad less trapezoidal shaped...more streamlined, subtle, I know... I will be mounting the bed to the back of the cab and without the stamping detail it will make a cleaner mount... -RRR
Mr. Metallic Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Cool stuff, as usual from your bench. I'll be following
jeff f Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Man I'd be all over those wheels and tires . Oh just me , cool hot rod project .Jeff .
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted November 18, 2017 Author Posted November 18, 2017 More work on the chassis, made motor mounts and put in mid section x-member. Got trans/driveshaft tunnel glued to floorboards and fire wall. The seat is from the Black Widow kit, slightly modified to fit over the back of the cab...next up, z-ing the rear of the frame... -RRR
Dennis Lacy Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 Awesome progress! I really like the way that seat looks in there. Now seeing the overhead shot I also think the cab looks really good squeezed in a bit at the back.
