And I actually prefer the 1968 body style, with concave taillights. Can anyone suggest an appropriate high quality kit to start with? AMT '67 Mustang fastback.

Not bad kits, but the front end is kinda off in the headlight/grill area. The simpler AMT 66 is closer to correct. The best 60's era Mustang is the AMT 67 Fastback IMO

vamach1 Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 (edited) You were way ahead of us and Monogram, Gary. I sort of did the same thing except I had to use a fastback conversion part. The putty dried out after a few decades. Edited August 28, 2018 by vamach1
styromaniac Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 I wonder what our resident factory stock replica expert Bill "Mr Obsessive" Geary has to say about this topic?
styromaniac Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Then again...maybe Bill just isn't into Mustangs that much.
Atmobil Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 (edited) I just wanted to share my Monogram 1:24 66 GT350R in this thread. Built mostly box stock, I only added a few extra decals. Only issues I had with this kit was the front valance that was a bit fiddly to get to fit properly. Edited August 28, 2018 by Atmobil
Gramps46 Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Looks very good. You did a nice job with the kit.

Casey Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 To build this: Start with this: Plus the Cragar S/S wheels from this (and only this version of the '37 coupe):

Harpo Posted September 5, 2018 Author Posted September 5, 2018 I've decided to go with the Revell 68 Mustang GT 2n1 kit for my short wheelbase project. It's not intended as an exact copy of the prototype, just my take on a 2-seater version. And I like the taillights on the 68!
youpey Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 (edited) this is my favorite car, so i have built them all. i see you bought a kit, but i hope this information is helpful. 1. the 64 1/2 mustang convertible from revell/monogram/revell germany = this is a basic kit which shares 90% of the parts with the revell/monogram mustang fastback, shelby gt350, gt350r, gt350h, etc. HOWEVER, this kit has extra bits for the interior including a center console and the pony interior gauges on the steering wheel. it does not however have the pony interior seats or anything like that. it also has the basic wheels with knockoff hubcap. there were versions that have the indy pace car decals, but i dont know if they all do 2. 65 mustang fastback from revell/monogram/revell germany = this is basic kit that shares 90% of the parts with the shelby gt350, gt350h etc (like #1). this has the performance wheels, which look like 5 star rims. this does not include the bits for the interior that the convertible has. the floor is bare, and is setup for a manual transmission. i dont believe there is an automatic shifter in the kit. one thing to note. the vents on the back do not fit perfectly on this. you have to line it up yourself. also there is a significant mold line right behind the vents that takes a lot of sanding to hide. it looks like the mold probably broke/cracked. 3. the 66 shelby gt350 from revell/monogram/revell germany = this is the same as the kits from #2, which makes the grill and interior incorrect. they are 65 parts, but it is labeled as a 66 kit. if you build it as is, its a 65. important to note, the gt350 kits have a hood with the scoop, and dont have the regular hood, so you cant make a stock mustang from the shelby kits. they do come with the grill for the standard 65 kit and the shelby. the gt350r has the different rear glass, and if i remember correctly, does not include the standard rear glass. on every one of the revell/monogram/revell germany 64-66 mustang kits, fastbacks and convertibles, they have bad flash on the front bumper in wrap around part of the front bumper. it is very noticeable and i have never been able to hide it without stripping the chrome and redoing it. 4. 66 AMT Mustang hardtop - this is a different scale from the revell as typical with the amt. this is important to note. this is generally a nice kit to look at from a distance, but the chassis is complete garbage with no details at all. the interior isnt great either. overall this is typically a pass for me. 5. 67 mustang gt fastback amt - this kit is overall OK. the front and rear dont fit great, but can be worked. this is different scale from the revell kits and way smaller. does not look good next to each other. overall i like this kit if you like the 67 mustang. 6. 68 revell/revell germany mustang fastback/bullitt - i do not like this kit. they have a screw to put together the chassis. if i remember correctly the axle is metal bar. it looks good when done, but i was surprised at what they pulled with this. 7. 65 mustang fastback AMT - this is probably the best looking mustang fastback kit on the body. it is long discontinued and there was a couple of vendors that casted resin versions of this. its super expensive to find this kit since its discontinued for 30+ years. i am sure there are others i am forgetting, but this is the general set of most common you will find. i like to use the interior bits from the 64.5 mustang convertible and put them into the 65 fastback kit. however, it gets expensive for a couple of extra pieces. one other thing to note. the monogram 65 fastback with the red car on the picture does not have the issue with the bumpers with the flash that i could see ( i bought 2 of these and neither had the flash), but its harder to find now since its old now. however the kit is molded in red, so meh not related to the kits, the 66 mustang was the first year ford used the "ford blue" on the motor, the mustangs before that had a glossy black painted engine. many people think this is not correct, but after significant research, it is in fact correct. so if you ever build the 64/65 kits, the block should be black Edited September 6, 2018 by youpey
vamach1 Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Youpey I think you covered just about everything. It sounds like with the Revell versions you could build a 66 Shelby convertible (only six were made) but not be able to do a stock convertible.
Harpo Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 I've started this project: 68 Mustang 2+0 Short Wheelbase
