Mark Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 For the '66, the Revell Impala is the obvious choice. But the four-doors use a flatter trunk lid than the two-door hardtop, so splicing in the upper portion of a '65 convertible decklid area would be the way to go. I looked at doing a '66 two-door sedan using a AMT convertible body (have one "in stock" minus the windshield frame) but other things got in the way. For a roof, I was looking at a '70 Galaxie police car roof, which will need mucho rework (but again, have one on hand).

Model Car World has '66 and (I think) '65 2DS bodies, but I haven't bought one because the roof doesn't look quite right to me. But that's just me, it might look okay to someone else.
MrObsessive Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 Oh you guys are talking about the sedan! I had the four door hardtop on my mind as to me that looks miles better. A TWO door sedan would be nice though as they make perfect sleepers!
Mark Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 I was interested in the two-door sedan because I saw a restored '66 NHRA Stock class racer for sale at Hershey. I'm pretty sure it was a Biscayne with 427 engine. There were a few of those that were well-known in the late Sixties. Several New York Chevrolet dealers offered a 427 Biscayne package in '68 and '69. They were advertising it as a Chevy alternative to the Plymouth Roadrunner: cheaper than an SS396 Chevelle, and probably didn't weigh too much more. There were a couple of those around here, both were black but the Motion Performance book shows one or two in other colors. For some reason, the big-engine '67 combo seems to fall through the cracks.

Back in the mid '80's when I went back to school, I remember an older woman (mid 40's at the time) who worked in the office faculty staff area and she had a '67 Impala two door hardtop with a 427. Turns out she was a real car gal as she said she purposely bought it like that brand new, but after a time had to have it 'detuned' as it could (to her) be a handful. That's the only 427 Impala I can ever remember seeing on the streets like hers and to look at it you'd never know it unless you looked at the emblems. It wasn't a loud car at all as she was probably past the point where she wanted to hear a lot of noise.

They're probably trying to make the thing work with the hardtop windshield, which is usually 2" - 2-1/2" or so shorter than the sedan/wagon glass. The Ford roof (my preliminary choice) probably isn't the greatest either. I didn't check the curvature of the windshield side-to-side, but I'll bet it's different from the Chevy. Too, the Ford roof probably has different characteristics (crown of top panel, radius of rear window corners) that would still brand it as a "Ford piece" if it were swapped straight to the Chevy body with no changes.
MrObsessive Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 Mark, the only roof section I can think of offhand that might be a bit better than the Ford is Monogram's (original) '69 Camaro. That thing is so junky IMO, but at least the roof section could be reworked a bit easier than the Ford.

Got the idea from someone at the other forum who did a Supernatural Impala that way a few years ago. Now I'll wait to see what the new kit look like.

Hmmm...........I wonder if there are pics of that kit out there yet?? I'd sure love to see it too and it'll be definitely a must have IF it looks right. Come to think of it, I never even heard of this car until recently as I'm not a TV watcher so I never saw the show. I think it'll be a good seller not only because of the show, but it's an unusual subject as it's kinda 'out there' for us lunatic fringers and a number of things can be done with it.
Snake45 Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 You do know there's already a 1/24 diecast of it, right? It's pretty nice except for something's not quite right with the roof, or the side window line, or something. I haven't gotten around to trying to fix mine yet.
MrObsessive Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 OK, I remember seeing it. I hope Round 2 doesn't base their mold on that. If so, the roof definitely will need some tweaking as to my sight it didn't seem right to me either. No biggie as it'll be MUCH easier than trying to convert the Impala two door into a four door.

I like their 1/64th and 1/43rd lines mostly...I have a few of their 1/24ths (the Blues Brothers Monaco and Chicago Police Car, Supernatural Impala) and they have some shortcomings. But for cheaper diecast, they aren't bad. Not Danbury Mint or Franklin Mint quality, but not those price points either.

You could use the roof section from the Monogram '64 GTO.......they're a very close match. Exactly. I want to do a 65 or 66 GM full size 4 door hardtop. If a new kit doesn't come out in the next couple of years, I may do one myself. I'm not restricted to Chevrolet though. Also, I would like to do a 65-6 Ford Galaxie or Mercury Marauder 4 door hardtop. My grandma had a 65 Galaxie 4 door hardtop that I would love to do a build of.
Luc Janssens Posted June 7, 2019 Posted June 7, 2019 On FB I learned that Round2 didn't show the Supernatural Impala at Wonderfest, the word was that it wasn't ready yet.

Oh well. Something to look forward to. There will likely be countless reissues of other kits before it shows up, so plenty to keep people busy..

I like to pick up an occasional cheap diecast usually at Walmart (but I'm not in there much since ours isn't interested in adding plastic models, and have started locking EVERYTHING up in cases) I can sometimes pick up a useable set of wheels and fairly nice lettered or redline tires for less than Round2 wants for tires and I have never got any of these with off center lettering or sidewall markings.
