tmb727 Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 AMT '66 Glaaxie 500 7Liter kit. Inspiration for the build came from the June 2017 edition of "Muscle Machines" magazine. Kevin Oeste and his V8 Speed and Resto shop did the restoration. I watch his "Muscle Car of the Week" videos on YouTube all the time. In fact, if you do a search for "66 Galaxie 500 7 Litre", you can find and watch a nice little video on the restoration of this car. For my build, I didn't do the exact colors, but as it turns out, the Tamiya TS-92 Metallic Orange that I chose is not too far off from this Ford "Emberglo" color. I used generic Testors Brown and Light Ivory for the interior, mainly because I already had the paint and wanted to use it up. The only aftermarket part is the open element air cleaner from my spares bin, as I did not care for the look of the kit's chrome snorkel air cleaner. So here's my take:
espo Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 Great looking build. I like the way you did your detailing under the hood and the different colors you used on the chassis gives it a very realistic look. I have often used the same magazine for referencing a subject and found it to be about the best. The TS92 paint is one of my favorites. Another one to consider next time would be Testors 1840M Flaming Orange as it is just a shade darker.
Snake45 Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 You're right, that paint's not too far from Emberglow, one of my favorite Ford colors. Nice work! Well done and model on!
StevenGuthmiller Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 A very nice build Tom! I don't have one of these kits........yet, but it's interesting to look at some comparisons between the '66 kit and the current project that I'm working on, the AMT '67 Galaxie XL. The first thing that I noticed was the chassis. Is the '66 chassis a two part deal like the '67 where the interior tub floor is separate from the frame? I was also wondering about the exhaust. Is it entirely separate from the chassis, or are parts of it molded t the chassis? I also see that there are details molded into the chassis, like the brake lines, (absent on the '67) and some wiring and plumbing detail molded into the fire wall and fender wells, (also non-existent on the '67) Otherwise, everything looks very similar. One of the main gripes I've always had about the AMT '66 kit is the stance. To my eye, they sit entirely too low in the rear especially. If you look at the photo of the 1:1 that you posted, it sits considerably higher giving it a much more aggressive look. The kit can have a bit of a dumpy "grandpa" stance as it comes from the box. Steve
tmb727 Posted March 9, 2019 Author Posted March 9, 2019 Answering Steven Guthmiller's post: - It's a one piece chassis. I masked off and painted the frame after I applied the Tamiya Red Oxide primer to the entire part. - The exhaust is separate from the chassis. However, the pipes towards the back are molded with the rear axle as one piece. Also, the pipes at the front didn't quite meet up with the exhaust manifolds. I had to make "connectors" from some styrene tube stock. - Stance. Yes, the stance was extremely low in the rear. I had to add some half round styrene stock to the tops of the rear inner fender walls in under to get something acceptable to me. Also, the chassis has to go as far forward as it will go in the body in order to get the wheels centered in the wells.
kelson Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 A very nice build!,do you have any pics of the interior?,it looks like you really did a good job on it.

All things to take into consideration if and when I build one in the future. I'm guessing that the AMT '65 and '66 Fords shared the same chassis and then they must have changed a bit in '67. It looks as if a possible chassis swap might be the best answer for the stance issues. Steve
Scott8950 Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 nice build.. i just built this kit and it was a fun build
Bucky Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 This is a beautiful '66 Ford! I really like the color on this build! If you'll pardon a slight thread hijack, I'll show the '65 and '66 Galaxie chassis from the AMT kits: The red one is from the '66 kit. They will both fit under the '66 body.

Ok, I guess they're not the same. Both a little different from the '67. Steve
Bucky Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 The '65 has steerable front wheels, and an opening trunk. The '66 has a metal axle in front. One could use the '65 chassis on a '66, and go ahead and cut the trunk open.

That's a rather large plus in my opinion. I think that maybe with a little suspension tweaking to adjust the ride height and maybe the wheel base, it could be corrected. donb Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 I always thought the 66 Galaxie was the best looking big Ford of the 60’s. Your work shows just how nice the big Ford was/is. Beautifully done.
