Koellefornia Kid Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 My latest build is one of the good old AMT annual kits, a 1961 Lincoln Continental Hardtop: Just a little bit customised: Suspension was lowered and 20“ resin wheels by Dan Decko were added. Shaved all emblems and lettering from the body and added wires to the engine. Hope you like it, greetings from Germany 1
Carmak Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 Nice build!! Did you add the B pillar? If so very nice! The half a dozen or so 61 sedans I have or have seen did not have B pillars (they added them to the 62"s).
Koellefornia Kid Posted July 22, 2019 Author Posted July 22, 2019 Thanks again, fellas! @Craig: No, I didn't add the B-pillar, it was already there. From hat I can say it was moulded kit-wise but I'm not 100% sure. It was a built kit that was covered with a very thick layer of paint. If it was the former owner who mounted the pillars, his buildings skills were much more improved than his ability to paint...
carrucha Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 Nice custom Lincoln. I really like the wheel/tire combo. The wheels look a lot like Detroit Steel Wheels. https://detroitsteelwheel.com/

I don't think those are B pillars, too thin, I believe it represents the window frames when the windows are up. I like the two tone and the wheels, both really complement the body style, great choices and execution.

That really piqued my curiosity and I did some google pic research: Seems to be that they are neither, nor. Obviously not a part of the window, but it is it a pillar that really supports the roof? I think its a decorative element carrying the window seals. But does someone really know for sure?

They were B-pillars..all the 1:1 Continental sedans of that generation had a thin fixed B-pillar. (as well as window frames that were visible when the windows were rolled up). Oddly, though, some of the AMT '61 kits lacked that detail (mine is missing one). Not sure about the '61 promos, never seen one. the '62-69 sedan annuals all had the B-pillar. Peter Lombardo Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 Very nice build..... the colors remind me of the convertible one I did...... I guess we think alike. Very well done.

Probably right, I was looking at the window frames on the convertible, and was thinking why would they make the sedan any different. Plus on the model you only see the window frames like on the convertible but not the center strip like on the sedan photos. Interesting detail, thanks.
gbt216 Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 First of all, a nice build of a great kit of a great car! Love the black and red and the engine wiring! As to the pillarless-ness, the answer could be found in this article: http://www.curbsideclassic.com/automotive-histories/cc-unicorn-hunt-1961-lincoln-continental-pillarless-hardtop-sedan/ What may have happened, and I am speculating, is that the kit was ready to go early on, as a hardtop 1:1 was being contemplated by Ford (the box art seems to indicate such as the illustration is of a pillarless four door). As the article indicates, the hardtop was yanked from production, leaving only the (what was termed by Ford later on, circa 1970) "pillared hardtop". The distinction between a pillared hardtop and a sedan is that the pillared hardtop has no window frames, like a hardtop, but unlike a hardtop has a B pillar. gt

My brother has the black 61 Lincoln my father had when we were growing up along with a 62 Lincoln convertible he got about 15 years ago. To make the window seals work the convertible back window has to drop a few inches and move rearward) when it is opened. Google a video of it. Over the years I have seen a few custom Lincolns without B pillars built with convertible glass and mechanisms. The look is impressive. Carmak
