I figured this counted as a "scratchbuilt model"!

For our community theatre's production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr., I happily accepted the job of building the car. I had to scale it back mainly because it otherwise wouldn't fit on stage, plus being a children's show, the actors are smaller. The boat-shaped back is made from a cut-up sandbox, and the wheels are wall decorations from Michaels. I'm trying to be as accurate as possible. It won't be an exact replica, as I have a small budget and have to make concessions to whatever found materials I can use. And of course, time.

Progress made. Getting the wheels on makes a big difference! The tires are made from water pipe insulators.

I modified the front end and added more detail. The firewall area is skinned, and the rear suspension now has an "axle". I was going to add a non-functioning steering system but I wasn't sure whether the fenders would hide it or not.

Thanks, and yes, the wings are going to come out of that slot. Not sure how, yet.

Now she's truly a "fine four-fendered friend"! The rear wheels didn't end up in the position I liked once the fenders were on, so I might have to move them forward a bit (AWB Chitty?)IMG_0558.thumb.JPG.1911e9303ccdcdec37cc1fe9c2f7c571.JPGIMG_0557.thumb.JPG.8b98af4df332ee5af7da8c4d3f1a82ff.JPG

The theatre was busy getting ready for another show, so I couldn't work on Chitty until yesterday. I decided to move the rear wheels forward - it wasn't as difficult as I thought, and I'm much happier with it.

I then filled in the gaps on the body and painted. It's weird not seeing the blue anymore, but I'll get used to it.
