I had hoped to have this done by the end of October.....but best layed plans and all that.....so I am just now getting going on it. My oldest son was married in September,  middle son moved out and he just became engaged with wedding Feb 1st, and youngest son was visiting his cousin in Texas for almost two weeks so I dove into the project last week.  Cleaned up the other bedroom and moved the youngest into it. Started shoveling and sorting through what was left behind by three kids and finally have made some headway on the model room/study. I had saved some upper and lower kitchen cabinets for my bench area and brought them in from the garage tonight. On this wall I will be mounting the upper cabinets against the ceiling with a space between them for shelving or corkboard and the lower cabinets will have a 36" wooden door blank mounted on top of them for a workbench, leaving about two feet to the left of the bench for more shelving.

Stay tuned for updates...

Forgot to show what my current work area is, a corner of the breakfast nook with a 40" desk.

Cool! Nothing like starting from scratch AND having some space to operate in, can’t wait to see it come together.

Good for you. I bought a 4 Bedroom house, foolishly thinking that I would get a hobby room, when the only child moved out. Nine years later he is still there. My wife claimed one room as her sewing room/guest bedroom, and the third is an office/computer room.  My stuff is still packed in the garage.

Sigh..........

I own a six bedroom house and it's just the wife and I.  Two bedrooms are guest rooms... called my daughter's rooms, although they live in another state. One bedroom is a sitting room with a couch and chair. Nobody sits there.  The two smallest bedrooms... one is my wife's photo / scrap book room... don't think she's opened the door in a year.  The final bedroom is my model room!

So I must be very fortunate to get one out of three.  ?   I know that I am because I have an awesome wife that let's me. ?

I had time this week to find a door blank, and my youngest helped me tonight by holding the upper cabinets in place while I attached them to the wall. So far, thanks to repurposing, I am into the project a total of $20......if you do not count the cost of two weddings in five months...?

Thanks Tom !

Brought home some shelving today, now I just need the time to assemble them...

I would like to put up a paint rack of some kind for bottled paints and would like to know what you guys use. Feel free to post a pic.

I built this shelf a few years ago. I should have put in a couple of taller shelves, but it’s generally worked out well.

Don't you worry about a seismic event throwing them off the shelves?  As I am setting my room up as well, I am watching this for ideas.  My place is about 100 miles from Sam I Am and closer to the Cascades, but I want to have some security on the paints.  My room at this point.

Seismic events?

Same room, another day!

We were away for the weekend.  A storm came through and shook the house.  My shelves weren't up to it. Same shelves in my new room in Pennsylvania are up there with screws that must stick out through the exterior siding!  And I don't put heavy stuff up there any more!  Lesson learned.

Gerry, I saw you at the show earlier in the month but did not get to meet you. Let me know if you are planning a trip to Newport.

Ok, shelves are set up, monitor will be mounted on the wall at some point. I have one set of shelves and an old secretary in the closet. I think if I get a 24x24 set of shelves to put next to the bench I will be set.

I thought about it. The jars themselves are very rugged, they would be falling onto a hollow core door, and the soil conditions here are such that we get mostly high frequency waves even in big quakes. A sailboat style shelf fiddle seemed like overkill.

I will probably glue a 1/4-inch retainer onto the front of the shelves when I build a new shelf.

Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet.  As we are still unpacking and setting up, it may be a while.  I might convince the "boss" to make an outing to Cannon Beach for the holiday display and some events.  Since we are retired, we can work traffic.  We're in NW part of Camas.

Will let you know.  Been a tad since we were in Newport.  Looks like several of the shops have changed over the years (we used to live in Bellevue until transfer to the Chicago area).

Getting things moved in from the garage. I still need to figure out where and how to set up my tools, equipment, and supplies.

Well, I had to break in the bench. ?

Months ago in a trade from DrKerry I received a custom 4x4 that needed some reassembly.  So I set up a desk lamp and grabbed the glue and some tweezers.

Better lighting is a must for any serious modeling.

So it's starting to look like a model room now. It feels good to be able to sort out and organize things. Still no corkboard or paint rack yet, but I won't let that stop me from starting a model on the 1st.  ?

Looks good Sam! Can't wait to see it in person in the future.

I have a spot in the back of my garage that is horrifying! I want to build a wall with a door and seal it up to make a painting area with filters, lights and all. If I do what I have planned it will be about 7ft x 7 ft. I've got my wife convinced that I need it since she bought me a portable paint booth.

Later-
