Steve That's because it practically is the same song... with the same ol grunts and groans with a little guttural outburst here and there accompanied by some sorta poppy background noise..... Not to mention any coherent lyrics are strategically designed to pander to New Jersey blue collar workers... it is a brilliant marketing strategy... even with a low New Jersey union employment rate of 500,000 workers you can bank on at least half of those buying a Sprinsteen album at a generous wholesale price of say $10 that is 2.5 million dollars for just 1 album and just 1 regional demographic. Not including live shows. The Boss figured out a good way to never be one of those workers he panders to. Tempo is the only differentiator. Bpm up Bpm down... same ol song and dance.... Can't stand him, but he had a brilliant idea lol!

And he's done a few other good songs over the years, but almost none of them ever got any air time.
Tom Geiger Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Back in the day I was a Springsteen fan, Born to Run era. He was a local guy who lived in the next town. You'd see him at the gas station and he'd say hello. I used to deliver pizza to his house. One year my buddy and I delivered phone books to his house. What turned me off to him was his political pontificating many years ago. We spent good money to see him at the New Jersey Meadowlands Arena, and as we all stood in the pouring rain (he was on a dry stage of course) he droned on for at least 20 minutes about how "Mr Bush is a bad man, man..." I didn't pay to hear his childlike political views, I paid to hear music. He could've played 3-4 songs in that time. I was instantly not a fan anymore.
Lunajammer Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 I never cared for his musical treatments, performance or politics, but after discovering great songs done by other bands that he'd written, I had to concede he's an accomplished and respectable song writer. Side note... After a performance here in Fargo some years ago, members of the E Street Band, one by one drifted on over to a bar across the river in Moorhead, MN and sat in with the house band. Jerry's Bar didn't know what was coming, nor did anyone there. The Boss showed up later for a couple songs. By the time word hit the streets, the bar was closing, but some lucky folks got a great intimate party.

Springsteen still lives in Monmouth County NJ and occasionally shows up places and sits in with the band. A few years ago we were meeting friends at Woody's Road House in Farmingdale, which is just a local bar with music on weekends. Never too crowded, we were shocked when the crowd was out the door! We knew the band playing was Patty Scalza's brother's band (Springsteen's wife) and people said Springsteen had showed up the previous Saturday and sat in with them. The resulting crowd was hoping lightning would strike twice. They were disappointed.
SfanGoch Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Springstain fans think he's the second coming of Woody Guthrie. Unfortunately, so does he.

Yeah. Here's three favorites I can think of offhand. Edited December 20, 2019 by Snake45
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Kinda fascinating how a thread started about a forum member's posted birthday turned into 30 seconds of hate for Bruce Springsteen. The album versions of the songs Born to Run and Jungleland will always be among my favorites, and unfailingly take me back to a time when I was doing my best to live fast and die young. I never noticed much else he did, and I don't give a rat's backside for what any entertainer thinks about politics.
Matt Bacon Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Man’s a genius... though I speak as a Brit. I suspect there’s a a bit of resentment knocking around from people who didn’t realise what the message of “Born in the USA” was until too late... Whatever you think of his politics, in the rest of the world Springsteen is up there with Dylan, Pete Seeger, Leonard Cohen and Prince as a Great American Songwriter... best, M.
mikemodeler Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 I have been a fan of his music since the mid 70's and have thought of his talent as a songwriter as among the best. He delivers a great show but ever since MTV allowed him a greater audience, he has let politics seep into his performance to the point where I could not go to a concert. As I feel towards any performer- actor, musician, athlete- I don't want to know what your politics are, even if they match mine, because that isn't what I paid for.

There's a way to do it. I saw Bonnie Raitt in concert and she was here in support of a hot button political issue and only about two times did she mention it during the concert, mostly as gratitude to the hosts (over the ramp of a song) and a quick 5-word jab about the issue. It did NOT stop the pace of the concert and even though I opposed the issue, I enjoyed the show immensely. It comes down to how much an entertainer respects their entire audience.

Possibly one of the greatest song writers that ever lived, but It's hard for me to listen to "him". Steve

DPNM Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 (edited) In response to the OP, I didn't see "theboss" listing in particular but l had been looking at the list of "Today's Birthdays" for about 10 days. What struck me was the amount of people who have not visited the site for quite a number of years. Edited December 21, 2019 by DPNM

Then BOOM! It death spirals into a political diatribe against the dude... I couldn't care less about anyone's politics... including my own they change like the weather. Serves me right I suppose lol!
DPNM Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 I was just trying to get the thread back on topic. This is listed now (12/20/2019): Today's Birthdays Arbatron (104 years old) Hasn't been on since 2014 so...?
Tom Geiger Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Back on topic... I’d say those 100 year old members were just people who didn’t want to share their own info so just filled in anything. There are more long gone members than current ones. I had suggested years ago that board management delete profiles that hadn’t been accessed in maybe 5 years. Two reasons, first it would make the directory easier to use and a lot of those had clever user names that new people may want to use.
