1970 Bub Strickler James Hylton Impala

Does anyone out there have any reference photos of the Bub Strickler James Hylton 1970 Impala?

 I have the decal sheet and the one reference pic below. Looking for pics of front and rear of car along with interior.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

That’s the only pic I’ve ever seen of that car.  What I do know is a ANT Wildcat can give up its roof to make the AMT Impala correct for that car.

This one should really get the award for most obscure build when you pull it off.  Hope you post some wips to take us along on the journey.

Thanks for tip on the Wildcat roof Tim. That never even entered my mind. Using MCW resin body. Got all the trim removed and fender wells done. Made them look a lot nicer than the real car. Didn't have the heart to butcher them like they did. Will post more pics on WIP soon.

Side bars are Polar Lights Mercury Cyclone. All the upper and rear are evergreen .080 rod. Interior is from an original glue bomb Bobby Allison Monte Carlo. About the only thing that was salvageable from it.

Looking great. Looks like a high quality resin. Some of those can be pretty rough. Thanks for getting a wip going on this.

While searching the internet for some reference pics I discovered that the 70 Impalas were not as rare of a stock car as I had thought. A couple other drivers used them in the Grand National Western and Pacific Coast series. Here's a few pics. The second to last one is a 69.

That's the body I used. Nice clean casting. Been posting on wip my progress. Will have new pics soon . Got a lot done but no time to post.

Michael, that thing is looking fantastic! Beautiful work. In that last shot it looks low-slung and aggressive, like a stock car should! The 1:1 probably wished it looked that good.

I made a sportsroof using the buick roof on the amt impala, but next time ,I will use the same resin body that you used.

I am amazed. I never knew they used a NASCAR Impala in 1970-71. Were there any Galaxies?

Most of these pictures are from the NASCAR West division.  Very few, if any, full-size coupe/sedans ran in what was then the Grand National series.  As far as Galaxies, I would think someone may have built one.  I have plans on using my '65 Pontiac to build one of these West Coast variants.

Looks to me that the 8, 18 and 81 are the same car. Probably renumbered for different races. The 44 and 63 look like different cars. But that's just my opinion.

Checked out Bub Strickler's record on Racing Reference website. The #35 was entered at the 1972 Daytona race and the 1972  Ontario race  but did not qualify for either one. Those are  the only entries for the #35 car.

In 1972 James Hylton drove the #35 for Bub Strickler to a 5th place finish at Jacksonville in Grand National East division
