Tom Geiger Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 What a cool car! Look at the rear deck... is this a hood? And for what?
Snake45 Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Good eye! Reminds me a bit of a '40 Ford hood. Probably isn't, but might be from something of the era....
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Almost certainly cut down from a '39 or '40 Ford hood, narrowed.
Mark Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 I'd guess a '41-'48 Ford hood, narrowed. The strip down the center is likely covering where the two sections meet or overlap.
bamadon Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Take a look at the '41 Ford hood. Same shape and same narrow bullnose.

Mark Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Probably more available, at a more favorable price. For 1/25 scale plastic though, '39 and '40 hoods (especially those from the AMT kits) are probably the ticket.
Tom Geiger Posted March 17, 2020 Author Posted March 17, 2020 Hmmm... I have the hood from the 1940 Ford sedan delivery out and it looks like it would work. I will pull out the others and see.... Thanks guys!
misterNNL Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 (edited) I would wedge cut a pie slice out of the donor hood to match the width of the roadster body being used. Please follow up on this and post your progress. Edited March 19, 2020 by misterNNL
Tom Geiger Posted March 20, 2020 Author Posted March 20, 2020 Okay, I’m playing.. the 40 Ford hood is a better candidate in my view. Plus I have some I can work with. And here it is with the side bump cut off. The shape is promising. The width of the hood looks good too
espo Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 Now take one of your other extra hoods and use it to form the bottom. I understand this was considered somewhat of a common Aero Package many years ago.
Tom Geiger Posted July 26, 2020 Author Posted July 26, 2020 (edited) I had put aside thoughts of this project and fabricating an entire body around that 40 Ford hood. Then yesterday I came across an old built Auburn in my hoard. I forgot I had it in a box with a few 1930s junkers. This body should work well on a Monogram 1/24 Model A chassis. It will need to be widened slightly at the front to accept the Model A cowl. Edited July 26, 2020 by Tom Geiger
RSchnell Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 If you're looking to exactly duplicate the car in the photos, you'll need a 1928 or 29 hood & radiator. The wheels are 21" in 28-29 and 19" in 30-31.
Tom Geiger Posted July 26, 2020 Author Posted July 26, 2020 At this point I’m just looking to have a boat tail speedster. Right now I’m busy mating this body to a 30 Ford phaeton cowl.
Tom Geiger Posted July 26, 2020 Author Posted July 26, 2020 It has started.. the first cuts are the hardest! Once committed, it becomes easy!
OldNYJim Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 What a GREAT look! I’ve been wanting to make a boat tail like this myself - good start Tom!
Tom Geiger Posted July 27, 2020 Author Posted July 27, 2020 (edited) Today’s progress! The Auburn body is two part, split down the middle like a lot of old multi part bodies were back when this kit was hatched. I filled in the back area with two layers of plastic to give it strength. Then I sanded off the Auburn trim since my intent is to build a cobbled together boat tail Model A TROG car. As such it will follow the rules.. no fenders, no lights or windshield. It will have a roll bar. I mapped out the taper on both the donor body and Model A cowl to the best point where their taper kinda / sorta matched. Everything you see here is heavily glued at this point. Next step is to glue on the firewall and start shaping everything together. Then putty fun! Edited July 27, 2020 by Tom Geiger
Sam I Am Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 Tom, you're going to have to move this to the wip section, it's really shaping up. ?

This thread shows how I got to the starting point of this project. It was still just concept when I presented the Auburn body, but it’s taken on a life of its own now so I will start a build thread!
