Mopar - D Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 I’m looking forward to seeing your next update progress pictures Tom.
redneckrigger Posted January 25, 2022 Author Posted January 25, 2022 (edited) Just got the front and rear carrier fenders all fabbed up and installed. Now on to the fuel tanks, hydraulic tank, pontoons, and side trays for storage of dunnage, pontoons and tools. Then make up the floor plates and then finish the cab and door and windows. But it’s getting there! Edited January 25, 2022 by redneckrigger 1
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted January 25, 2022 Posted January 25, 2022 That sure is a monster!! And it doesn’t even have the crane yet.?Excellent fabrication! 1

Yeah, and the upper and the boom are so complex that they will be like two completely separate builds! Lovin’ it!
Rockford Posted January 25, 2022 Posted January 25, 2022 This is inspirational! It's certainly inspired me to scratchbuild stuff. To think that started out as stock card and shaped rods, and your creativity, dedication and skill have turned it all into something so complete and complex looking as that carrier chassis! Just fantastic mate, a joy to watch. 1
gotnitro? Posted January 25, 2022 Posted January 25, 2022 love these mockup photos! they really show the immense size of the carrier
redneckrigger Posted January 26, 2022 Author Posted January 26, 2022 (edited) Got the pontoon, dunnage and tool storage all done. Made up the deckplates as well. This is starting to look like the real deal! Started on the pontoons with the base with the beveled edges. Edited January 26, 2022 by redneckrigger
brian falcone Posted January 26, 2022 Posted January 26, 2022 This is just insane. Wish I had the skill and time

I actually have neither, but I do persevere! I used to work with these beasts, and I draw from memory what they were and that helps me build them.
redneckrigger Posted January 27, 2022 Author Posted January 27, 2022 Just got the first pontoon roughed together. Need to add lift handles and latches and fill the seams but it has the general shape. Lots of cut, fit, cut, fit, scrap, do all over again, but it works!
Mopar - D Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 That’s awesome Tom you have one done a just 3 more to do. Lol. Looking forward to seeing your next update.

Looking forward to seeing your next update. The first one was just a trial run for proof of concept on how to make it. Since it came out okay, after a couple scrap efforts, the next three will be all done at once. Edited January 27, 2022 by redneckrigger
Gary Chastain Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Outstanding work, you have seriously mad skills, I will follow.
redneckrigger Posted February 20, 2022 Author Posted February 20, 2022 (edited) Got the carrier cab about done, instrument panel, pedals, heater, shifter for transmission and creeper gears, seat, and steering wheel, which is just placed into position and will need to be attached to lip of dashboard. Still have to make door and windows and gaskets, though the windows and gaskets won’t get installed until after paint. Also made up the deck plates and the rest of the pontoons. redneckrigger Posted February 21, 2022 Author Posted February 21, 2022 (edited) Little mockup of the Detroit 8V71 with exhaust and air filter in place. Just roughed in for fit. Also installed the carrier fuel tanks and filler necks. Edited February 21, 2022 by redneckrigger
Mopar - D Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 Tom your update is amazing and I’m already waiting on your next update lol.
redneckrigger Posted February 22, 2022 Author Posted February 22, 2022 (edited) Added the front counterweight supports, attached the exhaust and the air intake and filter, and made up the cab door. The basics of the carrier are almost done. Lots of truing, squaring, and surface finishing, and of course, detailing to do, but the main parts are in place. Will move on to the crane upper house real soon! Edited February 22, 2022 by redneckrigger
PHPaul Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 Fabulous! T'was me, I'd be awful tempted to leave it unpainted just to show off all the intricate fabrication that went into building it.

gotnitro? Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 Phenomenal work Didn't think ya could outdo yourself after the paver..now that must feel like a practice run Tom !
bobthehobbyguy Posted February 22, 2022 Posted February 22, 2022 Amazing work. It's stunning to realize that this was raw plastic shapes. Always enjoy seeing updates.
redneckrigger Posted February 23, 2022 Author Posted February 23, 2022 (edited) I am truly humbled by all the great words about this and other builds I’ve done. This one is all consuming but to be truthful, I am not as happy with it at this stage as with previous builds. It is unique, and I have ties with the real one, so I find myself being hyper critical with the details, even in this undetailed stage. The parts that are not square, level or finished perfectly are driving me crazy. But in time they will all be addressed. Until then, I thank you all for the encouragement and great words!
