cobraman Posted July 17, 2020 Author Posted July 17, 2020 Thanks guys. One more round of putty and I should be ready for paint.
cobraman Posted July 18, 2020 Author Posted July 18, 2020 Made a bit more progress . I have it sitting as I want it . I have the 1/18 scale engine from a cobra diecast installed. This kit is/was lacking in a bunch of detail and still will but trying to improve what I can . Not decided on a color yet but probably some shade of blue .
vamach1 Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 This is looking very cool and will be a nice one off custom.
cobraman Posted July 18, 2020 Author Posted July 18, 2020 Thanks Rex. I really bought it with the plan to build it as the actual car but after seeing what the kit offered and the tire problem I gave up on that idea.
Spottedlaurel Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) Excellent progress. On the 1:20 Japanese kit I recently built, the straight-six engine was unnecessarily wide so they could fit one of those electric motors in there. I wonder if that was once the case here? cobraman Posted July 19, 2020 Author Posted July 19, 2020 Thanks Carl. Nigel, yes there was a version of this model that did include a motor.
doorsovdoon Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 That's a wild looking Mustang. It's going to look amazing when completed.
cobraman Posted July 20, 2020 Author Posted July 20, 2020 Body in primer and just about ready for paint
vamach1 Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 I must say this is going to be a huge improvement over building it out of the box. The engine and wheels add a wow factor. When I built the 68 Shelby (1/16 scale) by Nichimo it had a similar unrealistic engine and I used the one from the MPC 427 Cobra. Seeing as how you rarely see this 1/20 kit built yours may prompt others that has this one sitting on the shelf to give it another look. I did order some 1/20 resin Cragar style wheels off Ebay as I had forgotten how goofy those four lug mags In the kit would have looked on it. If yours turns out as good as it looks you we might have to start calling you Cobra&Mustangman.?
cobraman Posted July 20, 2020 Author Posted July 20, 2020 Thanks, I do have hope that will turn out nice but then I always have hope. I think the body is the best part of this kit. Is there a pic of your 68 Shelby floating around here somewhere ? I have owned 3 Mustangs so I am ok with Mustangman although I think it fits you better. ?

Here is the Nichomo kit I built (Metallic blue) and some built ups I bought at NNL East for spare parts to maybe build a GT350 version. I used the AMT 1/16 65 Coupe tires after the original kit tires melted before I bought the two spare kits. The ten spoke wheels are pretty nice in the kit. As you can see those flat head valve covers are pretty bad - hence the engine swap I did in the one I built about 25 years ago. Edited July 20, 2020 by vamach1
cobraman Posted July 21, 2020 Author Posted July 21, 2020 Got some paint on this kit . Used Duplicolor Dark Blue Metallic . No clear yet .
vamach1 Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) Looking very cool - great color choice. You have inspired me - I ordered an ACME 427 race engine (1/18) that I hope will fit without to many issues and some 1/20 Goodyear tires (Lindberg Viper kit) to go on the resin wheels I ordered. I ordered this kit back in the 1980’s from Australia if I remember correctly long before Ebay and Websites. For a minute I had a crazy idea of doing a rear engine version like the experimental one Ford made in the late 1960’s but I thought that would probably be a lot of work and the engine would remain mostly hidden unless I hinged the rear window and trunk to open. By the way the wide fenders look like they should have come that way and blend in great. Edited July 22, 2020 by vamach1
cobraman Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 Thank you ! I look forward to your project. sounds interesting.
cobraman Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 Thanks Carl. I hope your mom is doing better.
Maindrian Pace Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 This is coming out very well, and fast too. The color, engine and wheels give it a 427 Cobra vibe that the original show car never had, and it works.
cobraman Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 Thanks Mike. I put those wheels for you in the mail today.
