Model Cars Magazine Forum

Dave, I noticed today a few "show us your" threads concerning a certain finished model group of cars.

I was thinking maybe there could be a new section added to the forum  that would group these threads into one section.  I just think it would be better so they would'nt  be spread around in the WIP section .

What ya think?

I put across that idea a couple of weeks ago "specific builds" but me not being very good at explaining things in writing I think people thought I meant a thread for every build and was recommended I use the search bar when looking for specific models. What MRM has done, and what you suggested, is exactly what I was trying to explain, it's a great idea I think. One area where you can post builds of a particular car.

Don't understand the "tag" thing.  And yes, for example, All completed Tri-5 Chevies, All completed Willy's. etc.

The tag allows for more specificity. When you use the Google search function to view any finished builds of BMW Isettas, for example, it returns hits with only those words in the post title, and tags with those words.

"Show me your...", is another way is saying "My time is more valuable than yours, so I'm not going to take the time to search for all of the completed builds I'm interested in viewing, but I want you to find your old post, then post them again in one spot so it's super easy and convenient for me." They already exist here on the forum, and the Google search feature works quickly and easily:

I will say it would be nice to have mandatory kit scale tags, but that's another topic really. As for your topic Mike, are you concerned more with them cluttering up an existing subforum, or them not being seen by as many people as they could be? I could see the latter being valid since I don't see many of that type of thread, but at the same time I'm not sure if a subforum just for "show your X builds" would be very popular.

One way I could see it working however was if there was a monthly contest to have your kit featured in the header at the top of the page. They could have a different subject each month that the forum members would vote on. It does appear that this forum software does have an option to have post reactions (similar to Facebook), so it would be possible to tabulate Likes.

The last overhual of the site was to simplify the structure. There are always going to be people who won't use the dedicated section. I prefer to go to one section rather than having to search through multiple sections.

As far as limiting picture that is counter productive to sharing your work.

What I would like is that when one quotes that all photos dont get copied. Ideally it would be nice to select a photo to quote. Would also help if there was an limit of the number of photos posted a a time. If you're going to post 9 photos post them in groups of three.

I guess my thinking was to have a specific  completed car (i.e. Tri-5 Chevies) in one "gallery", instead of being scattered about in the different sections.  Maybe not the right terminology but maybe ya'll get the idea.

It is easy to delete photos from quoted post, and that is exactly what I do.  But if some quoted photo is important to my reply, I leave that photo in the quoted text, double click on it, then resize it to a thumbnail size (between  150 to about 300 pixels across).  That way the photo remains visible but in a much smaller size.  Makes sense?

How about dividing it into decades? In the completed section there could be “Pre-1930”, ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s etc. Just a thought, and as said...google search works pretty good for finding specific vehicles.

P.S. I try to be as descriptive as possible in my titles. I have never used tags, but now that I know how I will.

Well I thought it was a pretty  good idea since there were already other threads started with specific cars but apparently not. Nuff said?  And I guess since I'm old and not so computor savvy I still don't get the tag thingy.

We have to be very careful about adding new topics. Too many, and navigating the board becomes a daily problem. We feel like we're very near this point now. I'm a member on an astronomy forum that has so many subforums, that it's nearly impossible to find the interesting content by browsing. I don't want that to happen here. Model cars aren't nearly as complicated as astronomy. I'd like to keep it that way.

This means that a lot of good ideas, like this one, just can't be implemented. Tags will help a lot, but descriptive topic titles are also needed.
