Time for another build, this time it's the '57 Del Rio Ranch Wagon by Monogram. I've been looking forward to this one, it's a good kit from what I've heard, and best of all, no opening doors like the '57 Fairlane by AMT! Colour combo I'm thinking will be red and white, but only the roof in white. The kit comes with seat decals but unfortunately only in green, there's not many colours that go with green so I'll be ditching them and painting the seats instead.

Will be following. I've got one of these in the stash. I may graft the AMT front fenders to it, though, the Monogram kit is wonky in the front/headlight area. Can't wait to see your results!

Yes, the Monogram and Revell '57s are not near as accurate as the AMT. This one has a lot of inaccuracies compared to the real car.

This is a great kit. You mention using a Red and White color combination, and Ford would have offered a red and white interior as well as others. With some creative masking you can just paint the interior the way you like and cover with flat or semi gloss paint to look like vinyl. As bisc63 pointed out the headlights are a little out of proportion. Try setting the chrome headlight bucket in place in the fenders without the kits headlight rings and see how this looks. This will be a little shorter than stock but a long way from the bug eye look. The other way around this would be to remove abot 50 % of the backside of the head light rings. The front inner fenders are much better on this kit than the coupe if you're installing wider tires.

Yeah, the headlights are a little bug eyed but it doesn't bother me that much. I decided to go with a colour change though kind of regretting it now. I've had this metallic blue hanging around for a while and decided to use it, it's a lot darker than I was expecting and it has a bit of a green tinge to it. I don't have any more of this colour left and now I'm stuck on what colour to do the interior! I think it's a little too dark for the interior anyway, but any suggestions on interior colours will be welcome! I still have the secondary colour to do, white or maybe cream? I don't know, this blue is a strange shade and I cant visualise what colours will work with it. I could always do a light custom job, I have plenty of gasser decals and such, so there are options.

Here's my take on "in-accuracies" FWIW.   Really how many people are gonna notice. Sure the "experts" on certain cars will but again how many of those will will looking at it. I consider myself pretty knowledgable on '57 Chevies. I have built a few and I  don't think there is a perfect '57 Chevy kit but I just don't pay much attention to the in-accuracies, at least to the point of doing major "surgery" to correct them. I guess I don't have full blown OCD.

I hope I haven't offended anyone.... just saying.

Thankfully I'm not OCD. I'm kind of in-between "That'll do" and "It's got to be right" Something like the front end on this kit would be way out of my league to correct, but pointing out inaccuracies is always welcomed even if I don't correct all of them. Some kits might have a glaring mistake that someone like me would never notice, like the AMT version of this car has no panel lines around the windscreen panel/front fenders. It's a pretty easy fix so I chose to correct that after it was pointed out by the kit building boffins, haha.

I like the body colour, hope you persevere with it (and don't need to do any repairs/additional paint work!). Perhaps light grey for the interior?

Thanks, Nigel. There's some vapours left in the can for repairs if needed. Yes, a grey is on the cards, also a cream/beige maybe with white or silver accents.

A complete dealer album with upholstery samples can be found here.

There's a medium blue vinyl you could have ordered on the Del Rio. I think I remember seeing a Humbrol paint that's pretty close to it. Another way to go would be to follow the lead of a build I saw on Facebook. If you can get Testors in the 1/4 ounce square bottles, two parts Flat Sea Blue to one part Flat Sky Blue. I believe Humbrol does have a cross-reference, but that'll get you a nice medium blue color. Might need a touch of white to get it closer to right.

Thanks, guys. I might do a dark blue with a kind of charcoal grey. Here's a picture, it's the wrong car and ignore the bright blue but gives an idea of what I might go with.

I like the color with white.  It seems like a color combination that would have been used in the late '50s.  How about two-tone interior, white with a similar blue for seat and door panel inserts?  Sort of a reverse of the exterior.  Really, the only opinion that matters on the entire build is yours.  In the end if you are happy with it, that's all that matters.

I have thought of that but the white might be overpowering against such a dark colour, but then again there is a lot of white on the exterior so it might work.

I like the color.

Thanks, David. I've decided to stick with the blue metallic. Just done some work on the underside with some blue overspray so no going back now!

I've decided to order another can of Kingfisher Blue for the interior. After considering all the other colour options, it seems the only interior colour that will work with this shade of blue is the exact same colour of the exterior.
