vamach1 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 I finished this MPC kit about three years ago. I have rarely seen another one built. It’s box stock except I used the 69 Shelby taillights.
Gramps46 Posted April 8, 2021 Author Posted April 8, 2021 Looks very good Rex. I hope to do as well with mine.
Gramps46 Posted April 9, 2021 Author Posted April 9, 2021 Today I am tackling the dreaded panel lines. I am using tape to help guide me. Since the final color will be white I am going to try and darken the panel lines before I paint the body white and see how that works. Yesterday I fabricated the periscope rear view mirror. Once the panel lines are done the roof top mirror will be installed and I should be ready for paint. I am old school so am using Tamiya spray cans. I am also a believer that this era of race cars should not have a high gloss finish.
Gramps46 Posted April 12, 2021 Author Posted April 12, 2021 (edited) What a time to run out of Tamiya matt black. Had to use a Walmart $.99 spray can. Dare I look. Better let it dry some more. This may be a 10 foot paint job I am afraid. Edited April 12, 2021 by Gramps46
Tom Geiger Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 The Walmart flat black doesn’t look all that bad. I collect different brands of blacks and grays to provide contrasts on my models. Ive used mine on chassis and components. It has less depth than Testors or Tamiya flats but dries fast and looks good
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 Lotsa appeal here for me. Any prototype race car under development has my immediate attention. Nice work.
Gramps46 Posted April 13, 2021 Author Posted April 13, 2021 I removed the masking and I am not pleased with the way it came out. I believe I am going to strip it down and start the paint process over again except I think it is now time to get out the old Badger airbrush and try again. It will also give me a chance to work on those pesky panel lines again. This is not intended to be a contest model but if I can see the problems so will others.
Gramps46 Posted May 30, 2021 Author Posted May 30, 2021 Well I have not given up on the J Car. I ran into paint problems and decided to strip the paint and start over. Popped the body into the purple pond and nothing happened. So I let it soak in brake fluid for several days and no visible signs of action. So I resorted to scaping the paint off and that worked. So I am back to body prep and trying the paint routine again.
Bainford Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Bummer! But, I appreciate your desire to get it right. It's going to be cool.
89AKurt Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 I see you posted a link to my build, thank you. I feel your pain! Cheering you on. ?
Gramps46 Posted August 2 Author Posted August 2 I has been 4 years, and I have been debating whether or not to try and complete this J Car test chassis. The body is pretty rough as it was sectioned and I did not have a correct MK 7 chassis for it. But with the GT40 collection almost done I decided to go ahead and finish it flaws and all. I have struggled with paint on the bonnet and did not have any color photos to decide between flat black or dark blue. There is a 1/43 Spark model and they chose to paint it dark blue. So now what do I do? Only post B/W photos 2
65slotcar Posted August 2 Posted August 2 nice project, i would say super dark blue. really hard to tell. 2
absmiami Posted August 2 Posted August 2 This blue reminds me of the Rob Walker team dark blue - i bet you tamiya makes something that is close -
Dave B Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Looking good Gary, not sure how I missed this one as I'm a Ford fan. Dave B
Gramps46 Posted August 3 Author Posted August 3 As I was going to get dog food it dawned on me that I had picked up an IMC GTP J Car during my absence from this build. When I got home I checked it out and low and behold the kit has a different shape from the Strombecker. The main difference is in the shape of sides of the tail. I now believe the Strombecker is J2, and the IMC is J1, the Ken Miles car. 2

vamach1 Posted August 3 Posted August 3 18 hours ago, absmiami said: Rex says he used old stock Testors Blue enamel - you might even have some … Looking at the pictures I used flat black when I built the IMC version and Testors gloss blue when I built the MPC one. Neither is probably correct as I from period photos it looks more like a sem-gloss dark blue. 2
Gramps46 Posted August 4 Author Posted August 4 Thanks for the pictures Rex. Still undecided about what I am going to do with this model. 1
Gramps46 Posted August 7 Author Posted August 7 (edited) I was not happy with the paint, so I taped off the front bonnet and tried to fix some spots that need sanding. Then I tried to paint the white parts of the body and that's where I Imade a big mistake. The white was not covering the places I was trying to fix either with air brush or can and ended up filling up the panel lines with the heavy coats of paint. Should have used primer before the white. So back into the purple pond again. Edited August 7 by Gramps46 2
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 8 Posted August 8 I applaud your perseverance. Only way to get one the way you want it is to do whatever it takes.
vamach1 Posted August 8 Posted August 8 Tail lights I added to the MPC kit. Gary we have all been there with having to doing things a few times to get it right. 2
Gramps46 Posted August 10 Author Posted August 10 (edited) Slowly making progress with the pond and scrapping. Still lots to go before I can prime and paint. Edited August 10 by Gramps46 1
